It's been a rough July for the Mariners. It isn't even that their record has been horrible. It's been pretty average in fact. The offense though, has been awful, and to make matters worse, Oakland won't stop winning. We all kept dismissing Oakland, but now they're tied for the wildcard and can't be dismissed any longer. The offense needs to wake up. We all expect the A's to regress to the mean, but maybe it's time for the M's to progress to the mean. On today's Hey, Did You Hear That?, Geoff Schwartz takes shots at the Hawks' offensive line, and Marshawn Lynch relives The Play. Justin Britt talks to Dick Fain for a few minutes today at training camp. We hear from Scott Servais after a big loss to a key opponent in the Houston Astros.
We've reached the trade deadline, and Jerry Dipoto didn't make the blockbuster trade everyone was anticipating, but he did make a bunch of smaller trades, including acquiring center-fielder Cameron Maybin for a couple of minor leaguers. Dipoto has acquired 9 of the guys on the 25-man roster since last fall, and all of the changes have been positive. Earl Thomas' agent made some pretty interesting comments regarding fans supporting teams over players. Were his comments out-of-line? We go In House with Bucky Jacobsen who woke up from a nap just to give us his thoughts on the M's latest acquisitions.
The NFL Network's Tom Pelissero spent some time in Seattle checking out the Hawks at the VMAC. He talks about what he's seeing, the expectations for 2018, and a quick look around the NFL. Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzales is having an incredible season, something most people didn't expect. He talks about what's led to his success, the trade for Tyler O'Neil that brought him here, and his perspective on the latest M's moves. On Textimonials, with the Earl saga dragging on, and with his agent making some strange comments, we find out why there is so much disdain for players who want more money.
With all that's going on today we haven't really talked about Paxton. He looked incredible last night. With the recent injury scare, it was natural for everyone to get nervous, but last night is a good indication that he's still healthy and ready to help take this team to the playoffs. John Smoltz joins the program to talk some M's baseball. He tells us what the team should have done at the trade deadline, and what to expect from Felix going forward. Jerry Dipoto spoke earlier today about the latest moves the team made. We roll that audio back. It's game 2 of a crucial home series against Houston. We set the lineup and hear from Scott Servais on Baseball's Heritage Pre-Game Show.
Football is finally here. The Hall of Fame Game is this Thursday. For the next six months, we'll have football to talk about every single week. Before we get too far into football, we've still got a relevant baseball team to watch. The M's won yesterday but lost the first two games of the weekend. Felix had yet another rough outing, so the question we've been asking all season looms larger and larger. What do we do about Felix? It's another installment of Regional Reaction, where we get your opinions on how to handle Felix Harnandez. Our own reporter Curtis Crabtree gives us his early thoughts on the Seahawks after the first few days of training camp.
Earlier today Softy spent some time at the VMAC in Renton and while there had a chance to catch up with safety Tedric Thompson. Thompson discussed how things have changed since his rookie season, and what he's learned from the veterans on the defense. Bill Krueger of ROOT Sports joins the show as he does every Monday at 4:20. We talk about this weekend's attempted double steal, Marco's continuing dominance, and what to do with Felix Hernandez. Textimonials react to teh first two hours of the show.
The Sounders won yesterday, capping off a great week and a half, gaining 9 points. Brian Schmetzer recaps the past week and looks ahead to the match against Minnesota. Jerry Dipoto spoke to the media this afternoon about the latest Mariners team moves. We get a pretty good sense that we're not going to see the M's acquire a new starting pitcher by tomorrow, and Felix is staying put. Steve Carney tells us, if we were to see a last minute trade, what the Rays might be giving up on Flea Market Flip, the Tamps Bay Rays edition. We set the lineups for tonight's M's game, and hear from Scott Servais on Baseball's Heritage Pre-Game Show.
Earlier today, Cliff and Puck spoke with Frank Clark whose contract is also up at the end of the season. They asked him about holding out for contracts, and he responded by saying all the right things. Ian Rapoport reports that the Seahawks have told Earl they aren't willing to negotiate and that they're done with him. Fans almost always take the team's side in these scenarios, but is there no way to see his side in this situation? We go In House with Terry Blount to discuss the latest on Earl Thomas, and the trade for Sam Tuivailala.
Tyler Lockett was on with Ian Furness earlier today talking about his health and his expectations for this season. This brought back up an old conversation from a couple of months ago. Is Tyler Lockett a run-of-the-mill wide receiver, or is he more? Where is Tyler Lockett's ceiling? The Athletic's Corey Brock joins the show to discuss the acquisition of Sam Tuivailala and the potential for more trades to come before the deadline. The A's are getting dangerously close, the and M's are still struggling offensively. What is the DEFCON level on some of the key players that aren't playing up to expectations? Textimonials continue to react to the Earl Thomas holdout in light of the latest news that the Seahawks reportedly aren't interested in talking about a new contract.
Frank Clark was on with Cliff and Puck earlier today. We played some of the audio earlier in the show, but we'll roll back even more of that audio and discuss it in depth. Hey, Did You Hear that? with more audio from Pac-12 Media Day, Seahawks training camp, and around sports. Tim Britton of The Atlantic tells us whether we really have a shot at deGrom on the Mets edition of Flea Market Flip.
It's finally here! Seahawks training camp begins today. After months of speculation, we'll finally get a chance to see what this team will look like in 2018. Not really a huge surprise but the Seahawks have waived Malik McDowell, ending his short-lived NFL career. It's been 20 years since the last top 35 draft pick never played a snap. Ian Furness spent the day at the VMAC. He talks about the first camp crush, Jacob Martin, and his thoughts on Earl.
The M's win yesterday, but so do the A's, and suddenly Oakland is only 1.5 games back. They've been relentless, with a .787 win percentage in their last 33 games. They've got a tough schedule ahead in the next few weeks, but the M'd do too. The M's have had a horrible month offensively, and having Cano's bat back in the lineup is going to be important. One thing to keep in mind though, even after all of this, the M's are still ahead. If the M's pick it up a little and/or the A's start to regress to the mean, Seattle will start pulling away again and everything will be fine. We spoke to Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott at Media Day yesterday. He tells us how he feels the conference is doing, and some of his responses might just anger you. Textimonials respond to the Larry Scott interview.
We re-visit the poll from Tuesday. If Earl Thomas misses ten games this year because of his holdout, will you boo him? The results can be looked at in different ways. What's really going to make the difference in whether people boo him though, much like with Cano, is how the team is doing when he comes back. Today was the first day of training camp for the Seahawks. There is so much great audio from the VMAC that we decided to throw it all into one segment. Today's installment of Flea Market Flip takes us to Chicago where James Fegan of The Athletic tells us what we might be able to pick up from the White Sox. Husky safety JoJo McIntosh says the Smash Brother era of Husky football is over.
Softy and Dick are live from Pac-12 Media day in Hollywood with a plethora of interviews from all around the conference. In Hour 1, we talk with David Shaw, head coach at Stanford about his expectations for The Cardinal, and the Pac-12. Cougar coach Mike Leach discusses his continuing battle with Texas Tech, and the talks he had with Tennessee last season, and a look ahead as the team looks to fill the quarterback position. Kevin Sumlin, new head coach of the Arizona Wildcats talks about the perceived differences between his new conference and his former one, the SEC.
We continue our live broadcast from Pac-12 Media Day in LA. Chip Kelly is back in the Pac-12, now coaching at UCLA. He talks about the differences in coaching in college vs. the NFL, and talks about his brief stint in the media. We hear from Kyle Whittingham, head coach of the Utes on the Pac-12 coaching carousel and the need for standardization of rules in college football. Oregon's new coach Mario Cristobal is ready to keep the rivalry between the Ducks and Dawgs alive. Oregon State's new coach, Jonathan Smith on what brought him back to his alma matar, and what he learned from Chris Petersen.
