We're joined by Dave Sims as he gets ready to call tonight's game at Safeco Field. Sims talks about the team's chemistry, their ability to stay with Houston the rest of the way, and what to do with Cano. Andy McKay, Mariners Director of Player Development tells us all about the team's farm system. Textimonials touch on Kam, Earl, Cano, and more.
Kevin Pelton of ESPN.com helps us make sense of the first few days of free agency, from the LeBron trade and beyond. All the best sound from around the sports world on Fun with Audio. With Boogie Cousins headed to the Warriors, Stephen A. asks "Why even bother playing?" The Mariners open up a three-game series against the Angels. We set the lineups and here from Scott Servais on Baseball's Heritage Pre-Game Show.
Softy continues his long vacation. Donald Watts joins Dick for today's show. Free agency officially began yesterday and, surprise surprise, LeBron is headed to LA. Donald Watts gives a few thoughts on the LeBron move and other moves around the league. The M's swept the Royals and have won seven in a row. They ended the month at 53-31. On June 5, we asked listeners to tell us where they thought the team would be at the end of June. We play back a few of them for your enjoyment. As optimistic as we thought they were, the M's still managed to beat most people's expectations. Joel Dahmen, a Northwest native talks about being paired with Tiger Woods at the QuickenLoans National, and accusing Sung Kang of cheating.
Dick caught up with Jordan Spieth yesterday at the opening ceremoney of the USA Games. Spieth discussed his involvement with Special Olympics, his foundation, and getting ready for The Open. The Mariners are only a half-game back of the Astros, but can they really keep pace with them the rest of the season? Bill Krueger talks about what needs to happen for the team to win the division, taking his weekly in-depth look at the Mariners. Textimonials continue to weigh in on the red hot Mariners.
The Sounders couldn't get it done against rival Portland over the weekend. Head coach Brian Schmetzer is frustrated but still takes time to join the show to discuss the match, when we might see Ruidiaz, and his thoughts on some of the recent World Cup Matches. With free agency underway, there are tons of great sound bytes from around the sports world. We run through the best of them on Hey, Did You Hear That? Tectonic shifts continue in the NBA as DeMarcus Cousins signs a one-year deal with the Warriors. It's become even more apparent that the NBA is a top-heavy league with a few teams picking up all of the talent. It's been ten years since the Sonics left town. Dick feels the NBA has gotten too much criticism by fans who don't want to have to place blame on the city. The ever-important question though, will we ever get a team back?
After what could be considered a successful road trip all things considered, the M's are back at home tonight to face the Royals, with a record of 51-31, 20 games above .500. We've said it before, but did anyone expect the team to be here at the end of June. Just winning the wild card would be kind of a disappointment at this point. This team feels a lot like the 2012 Seahawks or the 1977-78 Sonics, the biggest difference is that there isn't the feeling that they can maintain. for years to come. Corey Brock, on his way back from Baltimore, joins us as he does every Friday to talk a little Mariners baseball. Dick wants to know if Felix's performance has been tied to how he's been taking care of his body. Is he being harsh for expecting athletes being paid millions of dollars per year to stay in top physical condition?
The Athletic's Matt Pentz explains the impact the signing of Raul Ruidiaz will have on the Sounders, how critical tomorrow's match against Portland is, and what to watch for in the World Cup Knockout Stage. Royals color commentator and for MLB player Rex Hudler talks about this weekend's series against the Mariners, the Luke Heimlich story, and more. Textimonials continue to weigh in on the M's as we near the end of June.
We talked about it a bit in last hour's segment with Rex Hudler, but we haven't talked about it much with Terry yet: Does Luke Heimlich deserve a chance in baseball? All the audio you might have missed on Hey, Did You Hear That? We get Terry's expert opinion on the worth of Frank Clark. Could he really be worth over $75 million? The Mariners are back home after a ten-game road trip. We tell you everything you need to know about tonight's game on Baseball's Heritage Pre-Game Show.
Hugh Millen is with us once again today while Softy is out on vacation. Dick asks his Twitter followers, while Hugh is in studio, if they'd rather hear more about the Huskies or the Seahawks and the results were a little unexpected. The Mariners wrapped up their series against Baltimore with a 10th inning win. No one could have predicted the team would overcome this much adversity and be where they are at the end of June. There haven't been too many other teams in Seattle sports history that have been this preposterous. Today's starting pitcher Mike Leake joins the show to discuss the win and the series sweep.
What is Frank Clark worth? The question comes up after Danielle Hunter (who?) signed a contract worth $78 million over five years. It's estimated that Clark's value would fall around there somewhere. Is he really worth that much to the Hawks? Hugh Millen talks about what he's seen out of Shaquem Griffin, and gives his thoughts on Tyler Lockett. Textimonials react to the M's' sweep, and everything else we've hit in the first two hours of the show.
The News Tribune's TJ Cotterill talks about the preposterous M's after their four-game Orioles sweep, and 5-5 road trip split. All the audio you may have missed on Hey, Did You Hear That? Jameis Winston has officially been suspended for the first three games of the season following an investigation into an incident involving him allegedly touching an Uber driver inappropriately. Given Winston's long list of questionable to outright despicable decision-making, is it time for the Bucs to just let him walk? How does this compare to the Luke Heimlich situation?
Softy is still on vacation, so today Hugh Millen joins Dick Fain for the show. A recent poll in the state of Texas suggest that people have a 2-to-1 unfavorability toward the NFL. In a state with a football culture unlike any other, how can that be? Is it really all based on the anthem protests? We take your calls. Mitch Haniger, Mariners outfielder talks about what makes this Mariners team different than other teams he's played on.
The NFL is unpopular in the state of Texas according to one poll, and the anthem protests seem to play a major role. We get your reaction to the NFL and the seemingly never-ending anthem protest controversy. Greg Bishop of Sports Illustrated joins the show to discuss his piece looking at Tyler Hilinski's family in the months since his death, as they try to understand what led to his suicide. Textimonials continue the conversation on the NFL and anthem protests.
We take your calls and texts for Hugh Millen on Ask Hugh: Will an incoming quarterback come in and steal the job away at UW? Who will be the Hawks' starting running back at the beginning and end of this season? What will the Huskies' receiving core look like? On Hey, Did You Hear That?: Dak Prescott reads what the "experts" said about him on draft day, and Stephen A. Smith on why LeBron would be going to LA. By all accounts, the Huskies are going to be an elite football team this year, and Seattle is known for its loud, energetic fanbases, so why doesn't Husky Stadium have the same intense atmosphere that some other college stadiums across the country have?
Softy is on a staycation for the next several days. Stepping in for him alongside Dick Fain is Terry Blount. The Mariners didn't have an ideal week facing the Yankees and Red Sox, but they're still in a great spot. Their schedule gets much easier after the All-Star break while Houston's gets much more difficult. They also won't have to hit the East Coast again. Even a couple of last week's games weren't as bad as they looked. The M's are not as bad as their record over the last few games might have you believe. No, they're not as good as the Yankees, Red Sox, or Astros, but they are solidly the 4th best team in the AL. Manny Acta, bench coach for the Mariners agrees that the team looks great. He talks about his expectations over the last couple of weeks, and what he expects from the rest of the season.
