Dr. Terry Wahls on MS and Diet: PODCAST | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:09

Terry Wahls has an inspiring story of reversing her own progressive relapsing MS using a Paleo/Primal Diet. As an MD, she first worked with traditional medicines, but came to believe that increased fats and vegetable and fruit intake was the key.  (Real Food - what a concept!) She began researching micronutrients needed by cell mitochondria to help strengthen her weakening back muscles. Although she had already been Paleo for a few years, Dr. Wahls increased her vegetable and fruit intake to get more of those magic micronutrients, a key to reversing her health decline.  Less supplements - more food! We talk about the 6 to 12 cups of veggies and fruits she likes to get daily, and how to best incorporate that. Her book "Minding My Mitochondria" (about to go out of print, so get it quickly) has great recipes and information on toxins and detoxification, nutrient deficiencies, sample menus, and some interesting stuff on Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation.  E-Stim for short... Her new book "The Wahls Protocol" is due in early 2014 and incorporates plenty of details for all natural health patients.  Dr. Wahls was a marathoner, skiier, and competitive Tae Kwon Do athlete before her illness, and she really inspires with her commitment to recovery. Dr. Wahls shared some new insights (for me) about the demonizing of fat in our culture, and how it came about.  After World War II, it was observed that many disease states improved and the conclusion was made that it was the rationing of meat, eggs and butter that caused it.  Dr. Wahls points out that SUGAR was also highly rationed, but that the damage to fat's reputation had been done. We also talk about challenges to doing Clinical Research in the natural health model and how the public can best educate themselves. You'll get a lot from listening to Dr. Wahls and reading her books, blog and Facebook page.  Catch her as a speaker when you can!  Her focus on food is refreshing and helpful.  Dr. Wahls is currently running clinical research on MS, teaches, and treats traumatic brain injury in Iowa.

Jimmy Moore Interviews Beverly: Podcast! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:54

"Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" is Jimmy Moore's collection of hundreds (thousands?) of podcasts, interviewing Paleo and Natural Health folks all over the world.  It was a treat to be on his show this week! As usual, I talk full-speed, and get a lot of info packed into this half-hour show.  Listen in for more on these topics: MY HEALTH STORY- how I got into a natural health practice after my business career, and how I managed to (barely) make it out alive! WHY HUMANS WEAR OURSELVES OUT -  what makes us push beyond the point of comfort, and keep doing it?  Why do we "Just Do It" and what is it costing us? INFORMATION OVERLOAD - and the need to prioritize our daily lives. So how do we do that?  We've got to start with our emotional well-being, and do what our health demands.  Everyone is writing on Stress Management these days, but are we doing it yet? WHAT IS MODERN HEALTH? - the second half of my podcast title (Primal Diet - Modern Health) is Modern Health. That means learning HOW to make better doctor choices, food choices and more.  Are we being educated on finding the right kind of health care, and learning better self-care? GABA - THE FORGOTTEN NEUROTRANSMITTER:  This Neurotransmitter keeps us calm, with stabilized emotions, mood, bowels, attention, breath rate and more.  Jimmy and I discuss Passion Flower (sold in my little Supplements Store) and how to use it. MY DVD - Jimmy talks about my DVD, The Diet For Human Beings, why it is unique, and how it can help friends and family share info on a low-starch diet. There's more as well.... (I told you I talked fast!)  So tune in and enjoy this 30 minute podcast.

Causes of Constipation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:49

Here's 15 reasons for a slow bowel. Or more... If you're one of the fifty percent who struggle with this issue, either daily or at random (Irritable Bowel anyone?), this podcast may change your life! Seriously! Like all matters in Natural Health (or Modern Health as I call it in my podcast title "Primal Diet - Modern Health"), getting to the cause of something is the goal.  Symptomatic support is OK for a while, but when the body talks to you, symptoms are how it expresses a problem.  Work your way through this list and you're going to find and change something impacting your whole body. Your job?  Be a detective and figure out what makes it better, and what makes it worse.  Here's some of the areas I explore in this recording.  Pass it on to friends and family who need some help and they'll love ya'! 1).  They don't call it GLUE-TEN for nothing.... Gluten turns flour and water into gluey paste, OK?  So, why are you putting glue in your colon? 2).  The thyroid sets the pace for every body system, and for some people, low thyroid function is a main cause of slow bowel.  Here's how to get the right blood work to test it. 3).  Bacteria - too many, too few, in the wrong place.  Along with other visitors such as yeast and parasites.  Surprisingly, taking handfuls of Probiotics might not be the right thing to do. 4).  Genetics:  is your colon malformed?  How do you know? 5).  Side-effects of medicines, herbs, insufficient water and fat. 6).  Let me introduce you to the Ileo-Cecal valve.  It might need some help. 7).  GABA, stress, and the neurotransmitters have a huge impact on digestion.  Listen in to understand this often overlooked key player.  I have multiple blog posts on this issue as well as several podcasts.  This is great stuff!  Go here, here, here and here for starters. And there's much more here.  I talk about FIBER, doing a SALT FLUSH, coffee enemas, the gallbladder (or lack of), digestive enzymes, and 5 Supplements I sell that may be a big help.  Thanks for reading, for listening, and please add a comment if I've forgotten any other causes of constipation... Best wishes,   Beverly

“Digestive Health W. Real Food”: Interview W. Aglaee Jacob | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:59

An excellent new book on Food, the Gut and Health. "Digestive Health with Real Food" by French Canadian, Aglaee Jacob, MS, RD, is big, clear, full of info, and can be a good guide for your detective work on digestion, elimination (poop), and your health. Agalee, like most of us who come forward to teach or write about natural health, has been through her own digestive struggles, and has put together a juicy resource book on eating, pooping, IBS, bacteria, fructose problems, probiotics and more.  She offers guidelines on food challenges, supplements, choosing probiotics, and fermented foods. Transit time?  Leaky gut?  Stress and the gut?  SIBO?  FODMAP's?  It's all here, so you'll have to read the book and/or listen to our Interview to get the details. If you want info on the color and consistency of your stool, listen to us talk about green, gold, pale, floating, foamy and lots of other "poop" descriptors.  Now how much fun can you have in a 45 minute show? Oh, and there's recipes too.  Bone broth, gelatin, meat cupcakes, macaroons, apple pudding and other simple foods for healing tummies old and new.  I asked Aglaee for her recommended gelatin source and she suggests Great Lakes brand. Nice to have an alternative to commercial stock that may not be good for us. You can buy her book on Amazon or her website. And stay tuned - we'll be offering a Giveaway of a copy soon!

Jordan Reasoner and Steven Wright of SCD Llifestyle have devoted themselves to this diet and have zillions of loyal fans who have had their Irritable Bowel, Chron's, chronic diarrhea and more resolve using their guidelines on customizing the diet.  I had them on MY radio show in 2012, and they had me on THEIR show.  The link here is to THEIR show, so enjoy listening to our helpful talk on Food Challenges and more.  You may also enjoy the original book "Breaking The Vicious Cycle" and the original SCD website. Here's the Intro Jordan and Steve wrote to our show.... "As a Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist, Beverly has used the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) to treat countless clients, including forwarding her own health recovery. When she invited us to appear on her "Primal Diet - Modern Health" radio show a while back, we jumped at the chance to compare notes about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. We quickly discovered we aligned on so many levels that a one hour radio show wasn't going to be enough. We invited her back on our podcast to keep the discussion going and go into detail about what to do when SCD isn’t working. If you’re following this diet and feeling stuck, or your symptoms still control your life, listen to Beverly and I share our experiences helping people find a custom diet that works for their body. In this podcast with Beverly, you’ll learn: 1:51 Beverly’s journey to health and how she found SCD 9:40 Common mistakes starting the diet 15:01 What to do if you’re starving all the time 18:08 Avoid these problematic foods when you’re stuck 30:08 Common tweaks people make to put symptoms in check 34:51 How to find more of Beverly’s work
