Dr. Caldwell begins by saying that the question exhibits a mindfulness by the questioner that every church is not the same, and this encourages him. He says it is good for us to understand and know that just because a building or congregation have "church" in its name or on its sign, doesn’t make it a New Testament church. The church is a community of redeemed people, who have identified themselves with Christ, through baptism and have covenanted together to carry out the great commission (the local church is representative of the universal church). So the only way to answer this question is with Scripture. We want to go to the Word of God and ask, what should a church look like, what should a church be characterized by? What makes for a good church, what marks it as healthy and faithful? Dr. Caldwell says that in reading through the New Testament what we won’t find is a pristine church, there is no such thing. Every church is going to have struggles and problems because where the truth is, the enemy is also at work. Within every church eventually, there is going to be tares intermixed with the wheat. You are going to find people on the role of the local church who are not on the role of heaven, so there will be problems. We can Look for Guidance If we look at 1 Timothy 3:14-15 we can see an example from Scripture where we can look for guidance on how one ought to behave in the house...

They give a list of some, such as, feeding and supporting their family, saving for the future and retirement, paying down debt, helping care for aging parents, and supporting the church. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell what is the biblical perspective on this, how should a Christian think in terms of priority when it comes to financial matters. Dr. Caldwell admits that these are difficult questions, we don’t always know what is best and that we need wisdom when it comes to answering these questions. He reminds us that in Matthew 6:33 our Lord tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. So Christ and His kingdom should be preeminent in everything. Our Lord said this in the context of those worrying about having food, clothing and a place to live, things we need, the very things that often cause us concern. Dr. Caldwell also reminds us of Colossians 3 where we are reminded not to set our minds on earthly things, but on heaven, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. God’s Priorities Should be our Priorities So he tells us we want to start with having the right priority. This would be making sure that God’s priorities are our priorities and that we are trusting Him. Dr. Caldwell says that we do this by beginning with our giving to the Lord. When we begin with our giving to the Lord we acknowledge Him as the owner of everything, provider of all that we have, acknowledging that our desires are for the advancement of God’s Word and the gospel and that we desire to...

These are episodes that address heated topics for both the Christian and the non-Christian. The topics of illegal immigration, racism, and politics all affect the Christian as we live out our lives in this world. A very important truth to remember, as we do this, is that the Christian is to have a proper worldview that is cultivated from the Word of God, not the world around us. Dr. Caldwell tells us that Josh isn’t just the host of the Straight Truth Podcast, but that he is also the Pastor of Worship and Administration at Founders Baptist Church in Spring, Texas. Today you’ll also learn why that Dr. is at the front of his name. We have the privilege of hearing Josh share about his young life as a Christian and how he loved music and was involved with his church growing up. He shares about going to college in pursuit of music, and while there being challenged as a Christian to know what he believed and why he believed it. As he grew in his understanding and love for the things of God, people around him continued to encourage him in his pursuit of music and more specifically worship ministry. This eventually lead to the choice to attend seminary and explore this path. During his time in seminary, he attended and served in a small church where the pastors there also encouraged him in these endeavors.  Josh says it was about this time when he really began to enjoy being a worship leader. Dr. Caldwell tells us that Founders Baptist benefits greatly from Josh as he leads in worship, and it’s not related only to the music/song selections. Does God love everyone indiscriminately? Does God love believers the same as He loves unbelievers? If Gods’ love is the same for everyone, why do some people end up in hell and others in heaven? Does God have a special love for those He calls His children? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host, Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the love of God. The most recognized and probably the most quoted verse of the Bible is John 3:16 where it says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.” Pastor Richard says when this verse speaks of the “world”, he believes it refers to all of humanity, viewing all humanity as a whole. So the Bible does speak of God loving the world and it’s a common kind of love for all humanity. But to answer the question of whether God loves lost humanity in the same way that He loves His people, Pastor Richard says the answer is no. He tells us that God has a love for His elect that is unique. He quotes the example from Romans 9 of Jacob and Essau showing that the love of God in election, for salvation, is different, it’s special and it’s demonstrated to God’s people alone. God doesn’t love indiscriminately So, says Dr. Caldwell, God doesn’t love indiscriminately. The love that God has for the whole world is not the same love that He has for His elect. If so, is it our sins that limit His grace? Does God grant grace to pedophiles, to murderers? What if the devil repented, would God extend grace even there? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the amazement, wonder, and greatness of God’s grace. Dr. Caldwell begins first by informing us that even if the devil repented he could not be saved, because Christs’ atonement was for fallen men.  He shares that this is one of the wonders of God’s grace that we read and learn about from the book of Hebrews. What Christ did for mankind, He did not do for angels.  While fallen angels are rational creatures and they have volitional capacity, God did not provide a way for the forgiveness of their sins in the fall. Dr. Caldwell assures us that God’s grace is not limited by our sin. The only unforgivable sin spoken of in the New Testament is the blasphemy of the Spirit of God. Beyond this, there is nothing that God cannot forgive. There is grace for pedophiles, grace for mass murderers, and there is grace for the most heinous of sins we could name. In the book of Corinthians, the Apostle Paul lists some of these sins that the Corinthians themselves would have been known for, before being saved by the grace of God.  Children Deserving of Wrath We are by our very nature children deserving of wrath, so it’s not just what we’ve done in our sinning, but it’s who we are. How much influence does he have on my sinful choices? How much influence does he have in our lives and in our spiritual battles? Dr. Caldwell wants us to know that Satan is real, he is not omnipresent, but he is a very real foe and the greatest enemy that we face in the spiritual realm.  The devil is a schemer, we are not to be ignorant of his schemes nor of the ways he operates, the Bible informs us of this. However, Dr. Caldwell wants us to know that our battle is not just with the devil. We have sin battles that arise out of our flesh and we have sin battles that arise out of the world system, which of course is informed by Satan.  Something else we need to know is that Satan is not alone in the spiritual realm.  He is the leader of a force of foes that we face; there are demonic forces that we struggle against as well. There is some form of spiritual hierarchy that exists within the demon realm, we aren’t told by Scripture to try to figure it out; we are just told that it is. Salvation comes about in the life of a person who has believed the biblical gospel and put their faith in Christ as Savior and Lord. The moment an individual places their faith in Christ, with the biblical understanding of who He is and what He has done to save sinners, they are saved. Dr. Caldwell says one of the first acts of following Christ is to follow Him in the waters of baptism. A new believer in Christ ought to desire to be baptized as soon as possible, not because the water washes away sins, but because it illustrates the believer’s identification with Christ.  It’s commanded by God, and in some ways, it’s one of the earliest acts of obedience in the Christian life. So even as we see baptism closely associated with salvation, it is not a requirement to be saved. The Apostle Paul could not have said the things he did, to the Corinthian church regarding baptism, if baptism were necessary for salvation (1Corinthians 1:13-17). How should a Christian deal with feelings of guilt? How can I forgive myself? What is the difference between true guilt and false guilt? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot talk about the Christian conscience and our feelings of guilt. Pastor Caldwell begins by reminding us as Christians we have to preach the gospel to ourselves over and over and that we need to be clear about what the gospel is. The gospel is not Christ helping me save myself, it’s not me atoning for my sins; the gospel is the good news of Christ, that Christ died for sinners.  When He did this, He died for all the sins for all those who would place their faith in Him. He died not just for our respectable sins but for our most heinous and horrific ones. He didn’t die for some of our sins, He died for all of them. The Bible doesn’t tell us to forgive ourselves; it’s in Christ that we receive forgiveness, it’s in Him only that we can know real forgiveness. We have to know that we are fully forgiven and we do this by informing our consciences with the truth of the gospel. Dr. Caldwell goes on to discuss what this will look like in the life of the individual who has been saved and washed clean by the blood of Christ.  He tells us we need to examine ourselves about these guilty thoughts and feelings. In some cases, feelings of guilt are appropriate, because confession of sin may be needed. Many times we feel guilty because we are.

Is controlling anger a spiritual discipline? How do I conquer my anger? What can I do practically to deal with my anger? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the topic of anger. Dr. Caldwell begins by saying that we need to realize that the Bible has a lot to say about anger, therefore it is an important issue. The Bible informs us of two different kinds of anger. Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “ Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.” This is righteous anger, an anger that we are to know, an anger that is rooted in the honor of God. It focuses on God and His Kingdom, His will, and desires, not on me and my kingdom, my perceived rights, and desires.  Yet even here we are cautioned and have to be careful because righteous anger can easily slip into sinful anger if we are not mindful and diligent. Due to our flesh and sinfulness, this is typically the kind of anger that we find ourselves dealing with. Sinful or unrighteous anger is proud anger that is self-centered and self-focused, it’s all about ME. The Bible describes this as dishonoring to God. Sinful anger is dangerous and destructive. A Man of Great Anger Will Bear the Penalty Dr. Caldwell shares Proverbs 19:19 which says, “A man of great anger will bear the penalty, for if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again.” He explains that the picture here is of someone getting into trouble due to their anger and it implies a repetitive kind of nature.
