What are the doctrines of grace? Aren’t these doctrines found only in the Gospel of John and the Letter to the Romans? How should the doctrines of grace affect the life of a Christian? This season on the Straight Truth Podcast we are conducting interviews with special guests from recent conferences held at Founders Baptist Church.  In this week’s episode, Dr. Richard Caldwell sits down with Dr. Steven Lawson, Founder and President of OnePassion Ministries.  Dr. Lawson was here speaking at the Truth in Love Conference on Evangelism and The Sovereignty of God. In this interview, Dr. Caldwell converses with Dr. Lawson about the biblical doctrines of grace, often referred to as Calvinism and commonly summed up with the acronym TULIP. Acknowledging the sovereignty of God in salvation Dr. Caldwell asks Dr. Lawson to first tell us about his exposure to the doctrines of grace, and then about his journey with accepting, and acknowledging the sovereignty of God in salvation. Dr. Lawson tells us that he did not grow up learning these things from the Westminster Confession of Faith. He explains that it was actually in seminary, in his twenties, when he was confronted with the doctrines of grace. His first response was to reject and argue against these truths with fellow students and even at times with the professors. He says the talks on the sovereignty of God in salvation just arrested his understanding and was antithetical to his way of thinking; to the degree that he felt a little like J...

Has biblical prophecy ceased? Can believers today have the gift of biblical prophecy? Is modern day prophecy different than what's in the Old and New Testaments? This season on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot have three special guests joining them: Pastor Mike Fabarez of Compass Bible Church in Orange County, CA; Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at SBTS in Louisville, KY; and Dr. Bruce Ware, the T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology at SBTS in Louisville, KY. This week our panel discusses prophecy, a subject that often stirs great disagreement among Christians. The question that sparks the discussion is: Can or does a Christian today have the spiritual gift of prophecy? So our panel takes us to scripture to look at this controversial subject from a biblically based perspective, rather than one based on feelings, opinions, or experience. Spiritual Gifts. Dr. Schreiner, who has recently written a book on spiritual gifts, begins the discussion. He reminds us that in Ephesians 2:20 the Apostle Paul tells us that the church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets”. In Hebrews 1:2 we are told that in these last days God has spoken to us in His Son.  Jude 3 tells us we are “to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all”, by and through the apostles and prophets. Dr. Schreiner concludes that since the foundation has been laid and the canon of scripture is complete, God has given us all that we need to know for salvation and sanctification.  Given this information, the gift of prophecy then, in terms of "new revelation" from God, is not necessary, God has revealed and given all that we need until Jesus returns,

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, we ask the question: Is my Holiness the Same as God's Holiness? Biblically speaking, what does holiness mean? Is our holiness different than Gods? Did Jesus empty Himself of His holiness in His incarnation? This season on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot have three special guests joining them: Pastor Mike Fabarez of Compass Bible Church in Orange County, CA; Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at SBTS in Louisville, KY; and Dr. Bruce Ware, the T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology at SBTS in Louisville, KY. This week our panel returns to the topic of holiness. The discussion centers on the importance of New Testament believers having a proper understanding of Gods holiness and how it relates to us.  As believers it is vitally important we recognize that holiness is intrinsic to God's nature, it is who He is. Our holiness has a beginning, Gods does not, He's eternal. Our holiness is a gift given and sustained to us by God, He's self-existent. Our holiness has limits, we are finite, God is infinite. Without grasping these and other important truths about God and His holiness, and then also seeing this same holiness manifested in Christ, we develop wrong views of God and wrong thoughts of how holiness should be lived out in our lives. Often, this leads to wrong thinking and understanding of God's other attributes and characteristics, causing us to elevate one over another.  But we should not do this, Gods attributes do not conflict with one another. Faulty reason and logic in this area give way to the question, "How could a loving God send people to hell?"  The Standard is Holiness Our panel emphasizes the standard we are called to,

What is holiness and why are there misconceptions about it? How have these misconceptions about holiness come about? Why are there misconceptions about holiness in the church? This season on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot have three special guests joining them: Pastor Mike Fabarez of Compass Bible Church in Orange County, CA; Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at SBTS in Louisville, KY; and Dr. Bruce Ware, the T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology at SBTS in Louisville, KY. Today's discussion among our panel is on the misconceptions of holiness. The conversation is prompted by a recent conference, where each of our guests spoke on different areas of holiness. The topics were:  God's Holiness; Holiness in the Life of the Believer; and Holiness in the Church. Each of these men gave clear and precise teachings on what holiness is and what it is not. One vital point of clarity - Christians must have a proper understanding of God's holiness so that we have a proper understanding of His call for us to "be holy"(Leviticus 11:44,1Peter 1:14-16). Otherwise, misconceptions will abound not only with individual believers but within our churches as well. Some of the greatest misconceptions held are that the pursuit of holiness is restrictive People often mistake those in pursuit of holiness as peculiar, old fashioned, legalistic, weird and sometimes bizarre. Some of the greatest misconceptions held are that the pursuit of holiness is restrictive, it's constraining, it's austere, and it's depriving. There's no freedom, no fun, no joy, and no happiness to be had in this life. The question then is, "Where's the freedom to be ourselves and enjoy all that life has to offer?" As our panel takes up these things,

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, we ask the question: Should Christians Follow Old Testament Law? Is the Old Testament even relevant or valuable for the New Testament Christian? Is the Law of Moses binding on believers of Christ? Doesn’t the book of Hebrews teach us that the Old Covenant/Mosaic Covenant is obsolete? This season on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot have three special guests joining them: Pastor Mike Fabarez of Compass Bible Church in Orange County, CA; Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at SBTS in Louisville, KY; and Dr. Bruce Ware, the T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology at SBTS in Louisville, KY. Throughout the history of Christianity there have always been those who have argued that “we are not under law, but under grace”, taking the Apostle Paul’s words to extremes by rejecting the moral law found in the Old Testament, particularly in the Ten Commandments. Those who reject and deny that these are applicable to believers in Christ are often called “antinomians” - meaning no law or against law. Something new we are hearing today (yet, not entirely new, since it has similarities) is Christians being called to consider “unhitching” themselves from the Old Testament and any obligations we might think we have to it. Is this biblical? Should Christian’s abandon the Old Testament and neglect it as unimportant? Did Jesus do this? What about the Apostles after Jesus’s ascension? How about the Apostle Paul who wrote so much of the New Testament? The Relevance and Value of the Old Testament This week our panel tackles these questions and more that Christians have regarding the relevance and value of the Old Testament, and the Old or Mosaic Covenant for our lives today...

This week the topic of discussion centers around concerns these men see with the theological education and training of students coming out of institutional seminaries. The discussion is not concentrated so much on where the students receive their seminary degree from, but actually on the lack of practical application and preparedness they have for being in and serving in a local body of Christ after graduation. The discussion focuses primarily on those graduating with a Master of Divinity seeking to be pastors, but will be helpful for all who desire to work and serve in the name of Christ; particularly in the body of Christ, and for how they can be effective in ministry. Our panel discusses what they see as limits that the institutional seminary can and cannot do for its students. What is often seen with graduates is their love for theology, history, and more, but also many having never served by teaching a Sunday school class or worked in a church nursery. So additionally, our panel considers ways they see for students of MDiv to gain learning and skills that they wouldn’t have otherwise upon graduation. One main thought each member of the panel stresses, is the importance of serving and continuing to serve in areas of ministry within the body of Christ, even while the student is attending seminary.

How to Measure a Church’s Success This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we are talking about how to measure a church’s Success. Is a church’s success to be measured by the number of people that attend on a given weekend? How about the amount of money or beautiful buildings it has? Is there a proper metric or standard that should be used for the success of a church? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot consider the things we tend to look at when contemplating a church’s success. Oftentimes the metrics we use for the success of a church are the ones that are visible (i.e., the largeness of the buildings, the fullness of the parking lot, the number of people that fill the seats, or the amount of money given). Dr. Caldwell tells us that there are some churches that see success as the ability to attract crowds through numerous forms of ministries. They go about appealing to lost people, seeking to draw them in by felt needs and various forms of entertainment. But all these ways are a misunderstanding of what the church is, and should not be the measure or standard of a successful church. We Must be Clear About What The Church Is Dr. Caldwell tells us we must be clear about what the church is; the church needs to know the truth about itself. The church is not just a group of attenders, nor is the church a gathering of the local community; the church is to be a group of regenerate people -- people who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and have experienced the new birth. These are saved people who are commanded to gather together, and they do so in covenant membership to carry out the Great Commission. The church’s assembling on Sundays is for edification and discipleship – the “equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). They are then to be sent out for the purpose of evangelism.  Dr. Caldwell says this is not to say that evangelism does not happen in a church service as the Gospel is preached, because it does: people are often saved in this context. But even this is not a measure of a church’s success, because it is Jesus who builds His church, not man. A Church’s Health and Success is Measured By its Faithfulness. Dr. Caldwell goes on to remind us of the seven letters to the churches in the book of Revelation. He tells us that there is nothing there that determines their health, success, disobedience, or failures based on their numbers, or size. Each church’s standing or measurement is always related to its spiritual condition. So, the bottom line is a church’s health and success is measured by its faithfulness. It is not man’s responsibility to build and grow the church, but it is our responsibility to be faithful to preach and teach the Word of God, in season and out of season, and to live our lives in conformity to His Word. Being faithful to our Chief Shepherd, the Head of the Church, honoring God through Christ, and glorifying God in all our ways -- this is the standard of measure for the success of a church. This is the measuring that matters. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we ask the question: How Do I Increase My Faith?. I want to grow my faith -- what can I do? Can reading God’s word and praying more expand my faith? How can I increase my faith? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot talk about faith, where it comes from, what it is, and how it grows and increases. Dr. Philpot introduces the passage of Luke 17 where we can read of the disciples of Christ wanting their faith to be increased. Being disciples of Christ ourselves, we should all want our faith to increase; but how do we go about doing that? Can we increase our faith? Dr. Caldwell first points out that the One who gives us faith is the One who increases our faith.  He directs us to the text of Luke 17 and reminds us whom it is that the disciples ask to increase their faith: it is the Lord Jesus Himself. So, we do not increase our faith; God does.  Secondly, Dr. Caldwell asks, “What is faith?” He tells us in a nut shell that faith is believing God. It is taking God at His Word, trusting in His character, knowing and believing whom He has revealed Himself to be, and living out these truths daily. Therefore, it is to God we must come and ask for the increase of our faith, knowing that He can and will by working through different means. Faith is Like a Muscle Dr. Caldwell further explains that faith is like a muscle: it grows stronger as it is stressed. When our faith is tested, tried, and stretched, it is being expanded for greater capacity. As we trust in God and believe in His sovereignty in this world and in our lives, we are exercising the faith that He has given us. By continuing to trust, walking out and acting faithfully upon the Word of God, remembering God’s past graces to us in thankfulness,

How can I grow in my prayer life? Is there a way that I can pray more effectively? Does the Bible offer guidance in how to pray more biblically? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the ways Christians can grow and be more effective in their times of prayer.  Dr. Caldwell reminds us that an important step in being effective in our prayers is to remember to whom it is we are talking. If we know Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God is our Father, and we have been invited through Christ to come before the throne of grace. Thus, because God desires for us to commune and talk with Him, we can therefore pray with confidence knowing that He hears us.  However, we must not come casually or irreverently, nor should we come desiring to impress God with the length, eloquence or intelligence of our prayers. Our approach to prayer must be one of honor and reverence to God, which allows us to both humbly and boldly pour out what’s on our hearts and minds. Prayer is like breathing Dr. Caldwell says, “Prayer is like breathing.” It is something the believer should do constantly, continually and without ceasing.  He encourages believers to have planned times of prayer, remembering that we are not just rehearsing what’s on our minds at any given moment, but truly praying from hearts that are seeking the will of God. One way we can do this and be more effective is by praying the Scriptures. This will also be helpful when we are finding it hard to pray, or don’t know what to pray. The very truths we have read and studied from God’s Word help our minds to focus on subject matters that are pleasing to God; they will inform, direct and saturate our prayers.  We find examples of this kind of prayer in the bo...

Are you a new believer with no experience with the Bible? Do you want to read the Bible, but not sure where to begin? Where can we find help or guidance when it comes to reading, studying and engaging with the Bible? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell discusses with host Dr. Josh Philpot ways by which new and mature believers can pursue reading, studying, and engaging with the Word of God. In our joyful and eager desire to learn the Scriptures, sometimes we can lack patience and be unrealistic in our approach. We may be expecting to know in a matter of days what really takes years of prayerful devotion to the Word of God. Dr. Caldwell wants us to consider our reading and studying of God’s Word as a life long pursuit. In this way of thinking, we can avoid being overwhelmed and discouraged by what we don’t yet know, but able to rejoice in what the Lord is teaching us now, and excited to know there’s more to come. Understanding the structure and organization of the Bible Dr. Caldwell goes on to say that new believers would benefit from understanding the structure and organization of the Bible. They may need to learn how the Bible came to be and why there is an Old and New Testament. He wants to help new believers in ways that will produce a more well-rounded knowledge of the Bible; he does this by encouraging them to begin with reading through the Gospels, moving on to the Psalms and Proverbs, and then spending time in both the Old and New Testaments. He also recommends extra reading and studying materials that can assist and support believers in their study of the Scriptures. Is it unbiblical for a Christian to take medication for anxiety or depression? Are there circumstances that would necessitate a Christian taking medications for these issues? Will taking medications for anxiety and depression cure the internal struggles many face? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell speaks with host Josh Philpot about the concerns Christians have about taking medications for their struggles with anxiety and depression. Dr. Caldwell says that we should see that medicine is a blessing in a whole host of realms, but the immediate answers cannot be simple “yes’s” or “no’s.” We must not rule out physiological problems that have medical answers; yet, when we are talking about how a person thinks, feels, and decides, it is hard to know where physiological issues begin and end. He asks the question, “How much of these things are fed by our own thinking, our spiritual condition, and/or our emotional condition?” Oftentimes, we can become obsessed with thinking about things that really aren’t that pressing, and we can become consumed with ourselves, making ourselves the center of concern. How to help someone struggling with anxiety and depression? Dr. Caldwell further comments that to help someone struggling with these issues, what we want to do is get them to a place where they can hear us as we share the Word of God with them and help them to redirect their focus and thought life. Sometimes, however, people can find themselves in such a dark place that they are unable to reason; in these times, medications can be helpful to help get them out of that extreme darkness so that they can begin to reason clearly. We can then come alongside them and help them manage their thoughts faithfully, consistently, and biblically. So, is there a place for medication? Dr. Caldwell says, “Yes, but not in a way that this world views it; it is not going to solve all our problems.” He emphatically states that the ultimate answer for all our hearts and minds is the truth of God’s Word.  Church Discipline | Dealing With Sin Through Church Discipline | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:05

Church Discipline | Dealing With Sin Through Church Discipline (Season 4 Episode 33) This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we ask the question: What is Church Discipline? Why do some churches discipline their members and others do not? What should be the motive behind church discipline? How should church discipline be enacted within the local body? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell helps us understand why and when a church should enact discipline upon a member(s).  He gives clear evidence that the church is taught to do so from the New Testament and from the command of Jesus Himself in Matthew chapter 18 where the steps of discipline are laid out.  The church should practice discipline as an expression of our mutual responsibility and accountability among the members of the local body of Christ; and the motive behind it must be love, God’s glory, and restoration. Dr. Caldwell discusses that dealing with the sin should be restricted to those who have knowledge of it and to those who will deal with it. He further discusses that we want to be obedient to the commands of scripture, but that we also don’t want to be over zealous in the process; the goal is not about exposure, embarrassment, or retribution. We need to be patient We need to be patient, thinking about the person, giving them time and space for repentance, truly caring for the soul of the individual(s). Sometimes, however, there are situations when the disciplinary action must be enacted in a swift manner. Not dealing with the sin of people or persons who are sinning against others means that people are going to get hurt. In dealing with those who are sinning, we aren’t only helping the person who is committing the sin, but also the people who might be impacted by it. Other questions that Pastor Caldwell answers in this episode include: What is the church’s responsibility if the sinning person repents? What if the sinning person refuses to repent and is actually put out of the fellowship of the local body? What does church discipline do for the church and its witness in the world? Scripture references that are specifically discussed in this episode come from Matthew 18, 1 Corinthians 5, and 2 Corinthians 2:5-7.  How Do I Confront My Friend’s Sin? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:05

Why Does God Allow Suffering? (Season 4 Episode 32) This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we ask the question: How Do I Confront My Friend’s Sin? When should I confront the sin of others? Should I confront sin in the lives of my non-Christian friends? Does the Bible offer guidance in confronting the sin of others? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell helps us look at the lives of those we see in sin from a Biblical perspective. He explains that the first question that we need to ask is, “Is this person a believer, and are there evidences that they know and love Jesus?” Oftentimes we want to talk to friends or even family members about sin issues we see in their lives, and they may not even be believers. How we will deal with these two types of people is going to be different. Secondly, when we see an issue of sin in someone’s life, we want to be sure it really is sin, not just a matter of personal preference(s). The Bible speaks to confronting the sins of others Dr. Caldwell goes on to confirm that the Bible speaks to confronting the sins of others and takes us to Galatians 6:1-4 for a God-honoring example. He further explains that when we approach another to confront his or her sin, we must come humbly, filled with the Spirit, full of mercy, in a spirit of love, calling them to repentance. The goal of confronting sin is to restore our brother or sister in Christ in a spirit of gentleness, not to bring condemnation. What if the person sinning refuses to listen to me? What if he or she is a believer, but does not attend my church? Do I continue to confront him or her in their sin? These questions and more are addressed in this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, as Dr. Richard Caldwell opens God’s Word to give us Biblical wisdom and godly perspectives on which to meditate.
