Does Christian baptism wash away sins? Why do Christians get baptized? Am I a Christian if I haven’t been baptized? Do I have to be baptized to be a genuine Christian? What is the importance of water baptism? What is the difference between adult baptism and infant baptism?<br> This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss water baptism, they answer these questions and more. Dr. Caldwell begins with the confirmation that Christ saves, baptism doesn’t. Salvation comes about in the life of a person who has believed the biblical gospel and put their faith in Christ as Savior and Lord. The moment an individual places their faith in Christ, with the biblical understanding of who He is and what He has done to save sinners, they are saved. Dr. Caldwell says one of the first acts of following Christ is to follow Him in the waters of baptism. A new believer in Christ ought to desire to be baptized as soon as possible, not because the water washes away sins, but because it illustrates the believer’s identification with Christ. <br> It’s commanded by God, and in some ways, it’s one of the earliest acts of obedience in the Christian life. So even as we see baptism closely associated with salvation, it is not a requirement to be saved. The Apostle Paul could not have said the things he did, to the Corinthian church regarding baptism, if baptism were necessary for salvation (1Corinthians 1:13-17).
