Dr. Philpot shares that in the book of Deuteronomy parents are given the exhortation to raise their children up in the admonition of the Lord. They discuss how parents can read these instructions from Deuteronomy 6:7 and at times feel overwhelmed. Dr. Caldwell reminds us parenting is hard work and parents do often get discouraged as they pursue raising their children in a way that honors God. So he first offers us some words of encouragement.  He reminds us that the God who has saved us is the God who is sanctifying us. God who has given us these children, is the same God who has given us the desire to please Him in the raising of our children. He also tells us that while parents are the primary teachers of their children, Christian parents are not alone in this work. We have God, His Word, the Church and the encouragement of other saints as we go about this God-given honor and responsibility.  Parents who want to raise their children well should recognize that the Word of God is the all-sufficient resource. It not only contains the substance with which we are to teach our children but it is also the guide for how to raise them. Raising children is a lifestyle, it’s an ongoing endeavor that requires patience, diligence and endurance.  Parents who want to raise Godly children need to be faithful parents. Parents who want to raise Godly children need to be faithful parents. They need to immerse themselves in the Scriptures learning from them, living them out, modeling through their actions, words, and deeds a life that is reflective upon the truth they say they believe. Dr. Caldwell gives several examples of what this should look like in the life of parents...

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the issue of disagreements that come up in a local church. Often these issues are related to ministry practices or strategies, yet other times it’s over theology and doctrine. Dr. Caldwell says when we find ourselves disagreeing with our church leadership over theological and doctrinal matters we first want to distinguish between first-order, second-order, and third-order doctrines.  Not every theological or doctrinal issue is of primary importance. First-order doctrines are foundational to our Christian faith and define it at its’ core; they are central and essential. Dr. Caldwell gives us an example of a crucial first-order doctrine -  justification by faith alone in Christ alone. Other examples would be the Trinity, and the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. If you find that your church is deviating doctrinally in first-order orthodox doctrines, don’t immediately break fellowship with them. You will want to go to the leadership with your Bible giving them the biblical evidence for your concern, attempting to persuade them of their sin and disobedience to the Scriptures. Does God care about the prayers of an unbeliever? Does God even listen to the prayers of sinners? Are there times when God hears our prayers but does not answer? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host, Dr. Josh Philpot address these questions regarding prayer. They seek to give us faithful answers from the Bible in how God has revealed Himself and in what He makes clear to us there. Dr. Caldwell says when we speak of God seeing, hearing, and listening, we need to know that these are human terms. God is spirit and does not have a body, He does not have physical human appendages. Yet, the Scriptures teach us God is omnipresent and omniscient. He sees all and He knows all, there is nothing that God doesn’t know. So in this sense, we can say God does hear the prayers of unbelievers, but as to Him answering those prayers, our answer must be and will be qualified. The Prayers of His people Versus the Prayers of the Lost Dr. Caldwell begins by explaining that there is a clear and distinct difference in the Word of God with respect to God’s attitude toward the prayers of His people versus the prayers of the lost. As God’s people we can know that He hears us and answers us,

Is there evidence that confirms that I am saved? I’ve believed, confessed, and been baptized, isn’t this enough for salvation? Can we ever be sure of ours or anyone else’s salvation? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host, Dr. Josh Philpot think and talk through the subject of professing salvation. They help us look at what real salvation looks like biblically and remind us that the Bible calls for us to examine ourselves and to make our calling and election sure. Dr. Caldwell begins by telling us that salvation is not determined by professing, our profession does not save us. This is not the standard by which we should measure ourselves; profession alone is not an adequate way to measure our salvation. Simply making a profession does not save anyone. In Matthew 7 Jesus says in that day, that many will make an “orthodox” confession, but Jesus also says that He will tell them to depart for He never knew them. What a genuine profession does is give voice to the work of God in a human soul. The reason we believe and confess, that Jesus is the Christ, is because God has done a work in our heart. There’s acknowledgment in our hearts that He is the Lord who saves.

Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell how would he counsel someone, who is in an abusive situation in their marriage, about staying put or leaving the marriage with the possible outcome being divorce. Dr. Caldwell tells us that we never want to encourage a person to stay, remain or return to a home where physical danger is present and ongoing. We need to be wise about how we approach situations where physical abuse is involved. Several factors have to be brought to bear on these particular circumstances. How pastors and elders in the church would shepherd and counsel one through these difficult times, would depend on each individual situation and set of circumstances.  The Power of God Can Transform and Restore Any Marriage He goes on to say, however, that there is no sin that’s been committed in a marriage, where repentance takes place, that God can’t transform and restore the marriage. If there is going to be restoration where there was once physical danger, there needs to be a very careful set of parameters put in place. Is there a limit to how much we forgive? Am I to forgive someone for the same sins day in and day out? Am I supposed to forgive the monstrosity of evil that was carried out against me personally? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot tackle a very difficult subject, forgiveness. We often ask questions like these because we are unwilling to forgive and are looking for someone or something to validate us in our sinfulness and desire to extract due punishment. But other times it’s because we really believe that the sin committed against us, so heinous in nature, is actually unforgivable. We Need to Pay Close Attention to our Thoughts and Hearts Dr. Caldwell says that we need to pay close attention to our thoughts and hearts in these situations. Our ability to forgive is a commentary on whether we have been forgiven in many ways. I want to be a leader in my church, what steps are required? Are there specific qualifications I need to have to be a leader in the church? If I believe I’m called to be a deacon, an elder or pastor what should I do? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot talk about the desire to become a leader in a local church. They discuss why a person might want to do this along with the biblical parameters and qualifications that need to be present along with the desire. Dr. Caldwell begins by saying that it’s not wrong to want to be a leader, the Bible actually affirms this in 1 Timothy 3:1 saying, “If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.” Dr. Caldwell goes on to say it is not bad or wrong to desire noble things, but our desires need to be noble. Noble meaning - beautiful, good, honorable, and/or worthy. However, we should be willing to examine our motives and willing to ask ourselves, why do I want to become a leader? Do I see myself as being able to do something that will benefit the Church, or able to help the Church in such way? Do I want some sort of power or influence, am I wanting others to think highly of me?  Desiring to Be a Leader is a Good Thing Having a desire to be a leader is a good thing, but our desires can be wrongheaded.

How can I witness to family members and friends who seem hardened towards biblical truths? Are there ways I should not share biblical truths to unbelieving family members and friends? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot address some difficulties of sharing our faith with those who are closest to us.  Their discussion will help us think through some practical ways to share our faith with family and friends even if some of them seem hardened towards the gospel. Dr. Caldwell also gives us some clarity on how not to behave when sharing the good news becomes difficult. A Special issue For All Christians Dr. Caldwell begins by saying that this is a special issue for all Christians. We have a God-given affinity for our family members and this is often a heavy burden on our hearts. Sometimes we even find this to be true of friends with whom we've grown close. We may often feel as though the door to witness to our loved ones has been closed off on their end. How do we handle this and what can we do? Dr. Caldwell tells us that one of the most important things we can ever do is pray for them. In prayer, we can take great encouragement. What’s so encouraging is that prayer doesn’t rely on our presence, our words and it’s not limited to our influence. He continues by sharing with us that it is often those who are closest to us who are the least willing to listen to us. Dr. Caldwell also says that this shouldn’t surprise us.

Should I have a specific strategy, method or plan? Are there specifics I should include in my quiet time? Is there a minimum I should read or a specific amount of time I should devote to spending with God? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the topic of disciplined time with the Lord, often called a quiet time or more commonly called daily devotional time. Dr. Philpot begins by talking about how Christians know that they ought to be reading the bible and partaking of God’s Word for themselves on a regular basis. However, he says that there seems to be confusion about what that ought to look like. He asks Dr. Caldwell to give some advice on this and how to encourage Christians as they seek to structure their devotional life. Basic Elements of Disciplined Time With the Lord Dr. Caldwell says that some basic elements of disciplined time with the Lord will include prayer, Bible reading and time meditating and reflecting on what we are reading. He says there is freedom in how this gets accomplished. There isn’t an explicit method set forth in the Old or New Testament. Questions like when, how much, or how long is really up to each individual. What is most important is that you do something and remain faithful to your commitment. However, we must use care and caution.  It’s not just about glossing over the words and checking it off our checklist. We must not be satisfied with such a superficial approach to the Scriptures; we need to drink deeply and think deeply. Psalm 1 is a good example for us to contemplate.   We are not reading God’s Word for information purposes alone, our intake of the Word of God is for the purpose of transformed lives. Dr. Philpot asks Dr.

Dr. Strahan tell us he was raised in a believing home and grew up attending a Baptist church in Maine, so he heard the gospel and accepted it from an early age. Yet it was not in a context that emphasized limited atonement. He tells us that from as early as he can remember he recalls hearing that everybody had their sins paid for, and effectively salvation was a check you needed to cash.   It wasn’t until he was at college that he and some friends began reading reformed theology and about the doctrines of grace. He describes reading about and coming to understand that God has a people for himself and that He loved that a group of people before the foundation of the earth, and that He was carrying out His plan through all of time to save those people, as pretty revolutionary. Rick was here speaking on the conference topic of Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God. As with our other guests these past few weeks, Dr. Caldwell asks Rick to begin by telling us about his own story in relation to the doctrines of grace. What was his exposure, when did he come to understand them, and how did he arrive where he is now?  Rick tells us that he grew up in a very modest Baptist church that did not teach the doctrines of grace but taught very much against them. The teaching there made the God of the Presbyterians and the Reformers out to be a pernicious, persnickety, precarious God who willy nilly picked people out for salvation. So in his heart, he leaned away from these doctrinal truths.  The Depravity of Man His exposure to these doctrines didn't come until his first year in seminary, where he studied the depravity of man and learned how depraved men are.  As he studied this he began to understand that if dead is dead...

This week, Anthony Kidd, Pastor of Faith Bible Church and Professor at Los Angeles Bible Training School, joins Dr. Richard Caldwell. Dr. Caldwell starts off asking Anthony to talk to us about his exposure to the doctrines of grace and what that journey was like. Anthony tells us that shortly after he was saved he started listening to John MacArthur on the radio. One teaching that aired was John teaching from Romans 1. This was his first exposure, and it was on the doctrine of total depravity. As he continued to listen to Johns teachings, he was introduced to other teachers where he could go listen and read, one of those was R.C. Sproul. He tells us that he got hold of one of R.C.'s books, Chosen By God. In this book, he was exposed to more understanding of the doctrines of grace. But more specifically he says, that book got a hold of him and exploded his thinking as an Arminian. He goes on to say he saw it as biblical but was challenged because the scriptures were scattered throughout. Pastor Kidd wanted to go to the bible to be able to validate what he was learning, and this is what he did. He sat down with a couple of people, some limited resources and started studying in the book of Ephesians. What he found there made his journey pretty quick without much pushback, because it was there in the scriptures, in the Word of God. Limited Atonement Dr.

Phil begins by telling us that he grew up in a Methodist church, where the notion that God chooses who will be saved,  was something “we don’t believe." So when he began hearing about the doctrines of grace, especially of God's sovereignty in election, there was resistance. He had become passionate about evangelism and saw these doctrines as somewhat detrimental to that. Phil then began to question what was the point of telling anyone if God chooses who gets saved. He says he could have understood human depravity if someone had explained it, but the idea of election struck him as arbitrary and unfair. Are you carrying baggage of bad theology? Phil proceeds to tell us that about two years after he was saved, he enrolled at Moody Bible Institute. He came to Moody with very little biblical and theological knowledge, carrying baggage that he didn’t know was bad theology.
