It means the difference between life and death, heaven and hell, where and how we will spend eternity. Scripture calls us to examine ourselves, to test ourselves, to see if we are in the faith. One of the best ways to do this is to take the Word of God and let it be our guide. Let it reflect the truth about God and about who He says we are. Are we reconciled to Him; do we really know Him? Do our lives reflect a proper understanding of the gospel? The question asked in this episode comes from the reading of Matthew 7:21-23. A young lady asks, how can we know for sure that we are a Christian; how can we make sure we are true Christians and not like the hypocrites? She wonders, how does she know that she has eternal life?Dr. Caldwell says this is a good question. He reads the passage and then shares that what’s envisioned here in these verses is a day that people will appear before the Lord Jesus in judgment and hear the words, I never knew you. These people have claimed to have a relationship with Jesus; they have claimed to have done quite a bit in His name. They’ve been this, and they’ve done that in His name, but Jesus says, “depart from Me, I never knew you.” So Dr. Caldwell says that there are a few things he’d like to point out.He asks, is it possible for someone to say they know Jesus and yet don’t really know Him; is it possible for someone to engage in act...

He shares that a good example is in Psalm 73, where we find the reality of discouragement and depression, but also we find the answer for them. The answer – Go to the Lord and listen to His Word. The best thing a Christian can do is look away from themselves, away from their circumstances and feelings, and look to God. Scripture teaches us to fix our eyes on the author and perfecter of our faith. Jesus, Himself tells us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

The questioner states they find it hard to believe the universe as being created in six days. The individual states that they find the evidence presented by some of the best scientists overwhelmingly convincing. These being scientists across the spectrum as non-Christian, Christian, agnostic, and atheist. They want to know Dr. Caldwell’s take on this. They ask if the universe, including man, was created in six days, why did God make them in such a way that they appear old and aged? Why did God do that? Isn’t that disguising something from us when the universe and the earth seem to be billions of years old, but in reality, they are not? First, Dr. Caldwell tells us that he takes some issues with the questions. He states that these questions present in such a way that assumes a consensus of the universe being billions of years old. Evolution is often presented in this way as if it’s a fact proven by science. The popular perception of evolutionary theory certainly does seem to be that it has already been proven beyond all doubt. It Is Only A Theory Yet evolutionary thought is just that; it is only a theory that is far from scientists reaching a consensus and being settled as fact. Many Christian scientists see evidence for a young earth, so not all scientists agree.

Doesn’t the Bible teach that Satan was cast from heaven, cast out from the presence of God? How can Satan be allowed in the presence of God if sin cannot be in God's presence? There are a few passages in the Bible that seem to imply Satan has access to God and that he appears in His very presence. These passages appear to contradict the Christian understanding of the fall of Satan. Christians understand that Satan was cast out of heaven, seemingly unable no longer to appear in the presence of God. We believe this to be true from the Scriptures themselves, due to his sin of rebellion against God.We understand that sin cannot be in the presence of God. God's eyes are too pure to look upon evil. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host, Dr. Josh Philpot, take up and discuss two of these passages from the Bible. The passages discussed are Job 1 and Luke 22, where it appears that Satan is in the very presence of God. The questions they seek to answer are: do these passages tell us that Satan is allowed into the presence of God, and where do these things take place?Dr. Caldwell explains that sometimes in the Bible, God often communicates to us using terms that are easily received and able to be understood in human ways. There are times that a biblical passage uses figures of speech in what it states; this is referred to as an anthropomorphic statement. These statements use this kind of language so that human beings can relate.

But today, we know that on the whole, the Jewish people do not accept Jesus as the Messiah. How should Christians think of this nation today? Dr. Caldwell first tells us we need to recognize that the phrase, the people of God, has more than one reference. Dr. Caldwell tells us we can take any principle from any text of Scripture and make some application of the principle. However, if we haven’t considered the original context of the passage, then we haven’t even understood the principle correctly. Dr. Caldwell explains the importance of hearing and understanding the teaching of the verse or passage in the context where it is given. The text has a single meaning,

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot reminds us that in a recent podcast, he and Dr. Richard Caldwell have spoken about the canon of Scripture. Dr. Caldwell shared that the Scriptures were completed about 90 A.D. in the writing of the book of Revelation by the Apostle John. That was about 2000 years ago. Today we often hear people say that they were inspired by God and others that say they have received revelation from God. They say they have received this revelation by way of visions, dreams, or in other sorts of ways. Dr. Philpot says since God's revelation of the Scriptures came to an end with the complete canon, now compiled in our Bibles, does God go on giving revelation beyond that? Does God give special, extra, additional, or even new revelation to individuals or groups for further enlightenment or a higher way of living for Him? Dr. Caldwell says, no God does not. He explains that we always need to appreciate the uniqueness of what the canon of the Bible is. There is a uniqueness of the biblical books that we have. He explains that we need to know and consider how we came to have the books of the Bible that we have. We need to know that they have authority, not because some authority outside the Bible g...

Does God speak audibly? Does God speak to individuals and tell people things today as He did during the days of the Bible? Is God speaking audibly to His people today? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host, Dr. Josh Philpot, discuss how God has spoken in the past and how He goes on speaking to people today. Dr. Caldwell says that the first thing that comes to his mind when he thinks about the question of God speaking to us is the glorious truth that God has spoken. The book of Hebrews confirms this when it tells us, “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…”(Hebrews 1:1-2a). That God has spoken to us is a glorious, marvelous truth. One of the ways He has spoken to people in history is audibly. We can read about this in His Word, where God has audibly communicated with people. So the answer to the question God does speak audibly, is yes, He does. But what we want to ask is, does He always do that, has He always communicated that way, and is He doing that right now, today. The answer to those questions is no. God has not always spoken audibly. He has not always communicated this way. Special Revelation Dr. Caldwell explains that the primary way that God has communicated to His people is through special revelation. God has provided two types of revelation one is natural, the other special. God communicates in a sense through what He has made; this is considered natural revelation. Psalm 19 talks about the creation revealing God’s majesty,

Eventually, thus to be penalized and committed to eternal damnation and hell? This is the question raised for discussion on this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast. Dr. Josh Philpot presents this question to Dr. Richard Caldwell and asks if it is just for God to do this sort of thing. Dr. Caldwell does not give an immediate answer to the question. We need to come humbly and submissively to the Word of God, allowing it to give us the biblical answers. His teachings include God's foreknowledge, predestination, etc. Also included are the arguments and questions that arise in response to these doctrines. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss free will as it pertains to salvation in Christ, decision making, and choosing in general. Do we as fallen men and women choose God, do we contribute to our salvation? How does free will work with what the New Testament teaches about God pre-ordaining all things, predestination, and election? Do we have free will to decide and choose for ourselves? Dr. Caldwell first explains that we do not contribute anything to our salvation. The faith that takes hold of God’s promise in Christ is not something that we were born with; no one is born a believer. Salvation comes about as a result of the new birth, or regeneration that Jesus speaks of with Nicodemus in John 3. Jesus explains that apart from the new birth, no one can see or enter the Kingdom of God. Ephesians chapter 2 teaches that everything about our salvation, even the faith brings salvation, is a gift from God. When speaking of man’s freedom of the will, Dr. Caldwell says that we are all born with a measure of freedom. But it’s a unique kind of freedom that pertains to our spiritual nature. The Bible teaches that due to the fall of Adam, we are all born spiritually dead, spiritually blind, and spiritually deaf. This is a large part of the Apostle Paul’s gospel explanation in the book of Romans. He explains that before Christ, we were subject to the law of sin and death,

To whom do Christians pray? Are we praying to the Trinity, to Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? Is there a way that our prayers are to be structured? Is the Lord’s prayer an example for us to think rightly about prayer? How should a Christian go about their prayers, is there a specific way? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss these questions and more as they speak about prayer in the life of believers. Jesus' disciples recognized the importance of prayer and desired for Him to teach them how to pray. We find the example He gives recorded for us in Matthew 6 and Luke 11. In both places, we read how our Lord instructs us to begin our prayers. These first words given are "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.", and "Father, hallowed be your name." respectfully. Dr. Caldwell explains that this is the pattern that is most often found in the New Testament. We come addressing God the Father, in and through the Son, doing so by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the normal and regular way that we see Christians pray in the New Testament. He shares that there are a couple of examples in Scripture where Jesus is addressed directly, but also shares that he cannot think of any place where the Spirit of God is directly addressed. So, while we do have a relationship with each member of the Godhead, and each is worthy of praise and worship, the normal, consistent way we will pray is to the Father, by the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
