A questioner wants to know how to reconcile what they read about in Jeremiah 17:9 and Psalm 37:4. The questioner states that they find themselves wrestling with what the will of God is for their life when it seems that they have many good, but opposite desires within themself. Dr. Caldwell first reminds us that salvation involves a heart change for the believer. We are not a lost man if we are in Christ. Yes, we were indeed all born into this world with desperately wicked hearts. But thanks be to God He changed our heart so that we now have the ability and desire to love God, to love His Word and to walk in truth. We are now able to honor God from our innermost being. So while Psalm 37:4 says, “He will give you the desires of your heart.” it is preceded by the statement, “Delight yourself in the Lord;”. Dr. Caldwell explains that it is the heart that is delighting itself in God that will see its desires fulfilled. Psalm 37:4 is not teaching us that whatever we want or desire God is going to give to us. Instead, it teaches us that when our hearts are in agreement with Scripture, our hearts are agreeing with God. We want to seek the Lord It is when our hearts are here, that God is pleased to fill them with good things, good desires,

As believers, we should seek the will of God in everything we do. When we are wronged, we seek the Lord, we pray and we ask, yet we want to leave the ultimate outcome to our Lord. Clear teaching from God's Word will help us as believers work through the tension of desiring God’s wrath to be poured out, while also desiring for the salvation of the lost. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss and explain imprecation in the Psalms. Imprecatory Psalms are those in which the psalmist calls down or prays for curses, calamity, destruction, justice, and judgment on his enemies by God. These types of psalms are scattered throughout the Psalter. Dr. Caldwell says, even though there is this type of category of Psalms, we should not lump them all together. He believes that we need to take each one of them on their own and study them to see what is going on in that particular Psalm. But speaking in general terms, what often is taking place, is someone acting in a representative role. They are not always individualistic in their complaint and calling out to God. Many times there's a collective complaint expressed within the same Psalm. Psalm 109 provides an example of this where King David expands out the application beyond himself and includes the needy in...

It is the summer of 2020, and we are nearly eight months into the year. Currently, many are beginning to feel overwhelmed by the ongoing issues we see occurring in our nation and around the world. We have, and to some degree still are, experiencing a pandemic that has resulted in widespread death. We have been subject to quarantines, lockdowns, mask-wearing, social distancing, and more, all due to COVID-19. As the spread of the virus continues, the world goes on, albeit somewhat crippled. There are other deaths and tragedies that have occurred not because of the virus but despite it. We have witnessed mass demonstrations, protests, and riots. We have seen the pulling down of and destroying of historic statues, the destruction of public spaces, and even some private places. Much of this comes in response to tensions in the culture related to social justice issues, racism, and the like. There are many Christians who agree with some of what has been going on. They say it is a way of making the government listen to us.

Is it edifying of the church to sing songs that have been written and recorded by those with whom we might disagree? Examples of this might include: churches or ministries with whose theology or practices we do not agree; those who espouse a truncated view or distortion of the gospel; or maybe individuals themselves, who have walked away from orthodoxy all-together. What about the individual believer, does it make a difference what songs they hear and sing along with, in their car, home or elsewhere? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot dive right into the subject matter of the songs we sing as Christians. The main focus, is should we sing songs in the church by artists or ministries that we deem questionable? Dr. Caldwell says what's important when we ask this and other questions like it, is that we remind ourselves of what is the standard for our singing. The standard and ultimate source, for all our singing, is the Word of God. The real measure for what we sing is not someone’s theology they espouse, the popularity of the author or song, nor the beautifulness of the composition; the measure comes from the Scriptures themselves.

Within this chapter, there are specific verses that talk about how citizens of God’s Kingdom are to deal with and treat others. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot will deal with questions that relate specifically to verses 38-42. Dr. Philpot tells us a questioner writes saying, that they know that being a Christian means they are called to love and care for other people. They also write that they find real joy to meet the needs of others, especially those within the church. Although they say, there are times when they feel like they are being taken advantage of, like when the person is perfectly capable of doing for themselves. There are yet other times when they want to fulfill a need, but the person in need insists on it being met in a particular way. The questioner asks, can they use their best judgment to respectfully say no, or should they just give in? Would this be to offend the other person and cause conflict? What exactly does the Bible mean when it says to give him your cloak or go with him two miles? Dr. Caldwell says this is an example of a principle they often deal with here on the Straight Truth Podcast, and in the church. This principle is that the best interpreter of Scripture is Scripture itself. If we come to individual passages and isolate them from the rest of the Bible,

Two specific questions were submitted regarding a recent sermon by Dr. Caldwell. Why is the world a poor counselor to the church when it comes to setting the church's agenda, and how can Christians cultivate a life of godly discernment? Dr. Caldwell tackles the first question with a simple straight forward answer. The church cannot takes its counsel from the world because of the world's spiritual condition. Even though men in their fallen state can recognize certain things about what’s right and what’s wrong, they have no real answers or solutions to fix what is wrong. Outside of Christ, man has no access to the answers or solutions. Man lacks the wisdom of God, and this wisdom only comes through Christ. Dr. Caldwell shares Ephesians 4:17-21. He explains how this passage describes our past lives before the Lord saved us and how it also describes where all lost humanity is right now. He further shows us a stacking up of terms that describe our minds, our thinking, and thought processes before knowing Christ. He also takes time to explain the contrast that’s drawn in the passage between those who are "in Christ" and those who are “in the world”. The Church Is Misguided

Does the Bible give specifics about the types of music or entertainment from which a Christian may choose? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot dive into the discussion on music, one that often elicits a deep divide among Christians. The range of issues discussed when it comes to music, songs, and personal entertainment choices vary greatly. When it comes to music in the church, some declare no instruments should be allowed, acapella only. Some nay nay drums and or electric guitars, and others yet say hymns only and no contemporary songs/music. When it comes to personal leisure time, some would say that Christians should never listen to secular music, watch secular entertainment, or read secular books. What often happens when we aren’t thinking biblically about these things we tend to run to one side or other of the spectrum. We will lean either towards legalism or towards passivity...

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the ramifications of sin in the life of a Christian. Christians understand when they become saved that their sins are forgiven by God, in Christ. Yet, because sin has not been eradicated from our lives, the day-to-day reality continues to be a struggle. How are Christians to deal with this? The desire to do right and obey is there, yet at times we find ourselves still living in disobedience anyway. Often the result of the sinning brings feelings of guilt and grief. Sometimes there are even feelings of despair and worthlessness as Christians are continuously aware of their ongoing failure to please God. Does God punish us for this ongoing sin that we commit now or, will we be punished one day at the judgment seat of Christ? Dr. Caldwell says the New Testament is full of teaching given to the Christian that explains what God has done in saving us. It may be that so much attention is given to this because we are a forgetful people. Therefore, the Bible continues to explain the Gospel to people who have received the Gospel, being a continual reminder for us of what God has done for us. We are people who have been justified by faith in Jesus Christ. We are people who have peace with God.

Just what is the Word of Faith movement? It is not a denomination, has no formal organization, no hierarchy, and no formal creeds or confessions. It is a movement that teaches distorted views of biblical faith. It distorts what the Bible teaches about what it means to walk in faith. The movement is heavily influenced by teachers who would say they do what they do because God told them to do and say these things. They take verses out of context, name, and claim things which they say, agree with God's will,

The listener wants to know if Dr. Caldwell can share some useful steps for carrying out responsible actions in family leadership. Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell if he will address this from the perspective of the man as the head of the family, but also from the place of the woman’s role in that family unit. Dr. Caldwell explains that the simple answer is the husband is to take all the statements God has given in the Bible about living as a husband and father and live them out in the home. But beyond this what is often missed are the qualifications that are given in the Bible for pastors/elders. Included in those qualifications is the emphasis on a man’s home life. Dr. Caldwell says that every man whether he will ever serve as an elder or pastor, ought to be striving to live an elder qualified life. The same leadership style, quality, and character that belong to the leader of a home are those that describe and characterize the life of elders and pastors. This would also include what the Apostle Peter says of those leading the church as not lording their position over the church. So the husband as head of the wife and family must lead by example n...

Verses in the book of Proverbs speak of using a rod for disciplining. Are these verses instructing parents in spanking their children? Since these verses are in the Old Testament are they even applicable to Christians? Are there New Testament passages that affirm and confirm discipline by spanking? Aren’t we teaching our children to hit and that hitting is okay by spanking them? Therefore, is spanking appropriate? Dr. Caldwell begins by stating he believes these kinds of questions are asked because we do not rightly conceive what physical discipline with children should look like. He shares with us that some would say the passages that use the word rod in the book of Proverbs are emblematic. Hence it's only a metaphor for right guidance, instruction, and teaching, so the Bible isn’t really teaching a physical discipline. Quoting Proverbs 23:13-14, he explains how this just isn’t the case. He next tells us that taking biblical teaching as a whole and practicing sanctified common sense will help us know what physical discipline is meant for and for what it is not. Love Our Children
