(Season 4 Episode 32) This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we ask the question: Why Does God Allow Suffering? How can we come to grips with suffering? Can’t an all-powerful God prevent suffering? What possible purpose does suffering have? Why do believers continue to suffer? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell reminds us that we are living in a world affected by the fall and sin, which means that we will all, on some level, experience sorrow, pain, heartache, and death. These are common kinds of suffering that everyone will face in this world, both the saved and the lost. This is the truth the Bible presents about the world in which we live. Pastor Caldwell further discusses that most New Testament references to suffering have to do with believers experiencing persecution.  Persecution in the New Testament is considered a privilege. This kind of suffering is not the common kind that all people face. As believers, we need to understand that it’s a privilege to suffer along with Christ – to suffer, not because of sin, but for righteousness’ sake. If we are persecuted as a result of living godly lives in accordance with the truth of God’s Word, it is commendable. The Suffering of Job The discussion also touches on the suffering of Job. Pastor Caldwell reminds us that the book of Job helps us recognize that we are not able to see the big picture as God does.  Job was unable to fully understand the purposes and reasons for his sufferings; yet, in Job’s pain and suffering, he fell to the ground and worshiped saying, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.” Job rightly knew that God had both given and taken away within His sovereign plans and purposes, even though it brought great pain and struggles to Job.  Pastor Caldwell further explains that we will not be able to process suffering rightly until God’s glory is our chief interest. Are Christians Commanded to Tithe? (Season 4 Episode 31) This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we ask the question: Are Christians Commanded to Tithe? Does the Bible command a tithe of ten percent? Is a Christian even commanded to tithe in the New Testament? What if I can’t afford to give a tithe? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell talks with us about tithing and explains where the idea of the tithe of ten percent comes from. He directs us to the Old Testament where we can read of Israel (the Nation), God’s people under the Mosaic Covenant, being commanded to give tithes and offerings. He explains that their required tithing would have been somewhere closer to thirty percent not ten. He then goes on to say, that when looking at the New Testament, he does not see the command to tithe given to the church. He further explains that even though the command to tithe is not repeated to the church, some of the principles in the tithe are still found in the kind of giving New Testament believers are to be engaged in. Examples he will give and expound on will be that we should be motivated by the grace of God, have a desire and willingness from a heart of worship, and a love for God, that our giving should be sacrificial and proportional. He also helps us think through giving when our resources are tight by asking us questions that we should take to heart. Other questions that Pastor Caldwell answers in this episode include: Is giving of my time and service an appropriate form of giving? What happens with the money we give to the church and who makes those decisions? and What if I don’t have a desire to give? Scripture references that are specifically discussed in this episode on giving come from the following passages: 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9. The Role of the Church in Politics (Season 3 Episode 30) This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, the best Christian podcast on the web, we are talking about the role of the Church in politics What role does the Church have in politics? Should the Church align and identify itself with a specific political party? How can the Church speak to political issues without lobbying and activism? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and special guest Dr. Nicolas Ellen talk about the Church and how it can and does interact with politics and political issues. They remind us that the Church has a responsibility to preach the Word of God to His people. 1 Timothy 3:15 tells us that the Church is the “pillar and support of the truth”; so our role, in terms of what is going on in the political realm, is to instruct God’s people about all issues from a biblical point of view. The Church must be clear on what it believes, and must preach and teach that with clarity. Many of these issues will intersect with political discussions. Furthermore, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Ellen remind us that as members of the body of Christ, His Church, this world is not our home. We should therefore not be concerned so much  about aligning ourselves politically, but aligning ourselves with Christ and His kingdom. They go on to state that God’s sovereignty does not negate the Christian’s responsibility to pray. Prayer for a Christian is not optional; God has commanded that we do so.  They point out that, in asking these questions, we often do not understand the sovereignty of God when it comes to our prayers. Sovereign God has ordained prayer as a means that He has determined to work through to bring things to pass. Therefore, prayer really matters.  They explain that the importance of prayer is not that we come seeking to change God’s mind and impose our will on Him. We pray to grow in our understanding of Him, His character and to line up our understanding of His will and desires.
