Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore)

Summary: Folklore has been used for generations to share stories across cultures. Each week this season Rachael and her new co-host, Mindy, walk the winding path of folklore. They ask how the stories we tell influence today’s culture and how we view women. From murder ballads to fairytales, we discuss the power these stories have over us all. It won’t be just sad but maybe, just maybe, also uplifting. We are coming back to the podcast airwaves in April 2020.

 59: La Llorona REMIX | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2129

This week, we are re-releasing an old episode: La Llorona.  If you don't know the story, its a doozy. Let us sum up, woman marries man against her better judgement and has two kids. Man drinks and cheats and finally leaves her for another woman. Instead of getting her groove back, woman does the unthinkable. This story is pretty telling of how women are viewed as "hysterical" and how they cannot possibly live without a man. We suggest an alternate ending: La Llorona goes to the beach and meets Taye Diggs.  Audio engineering and other music provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music: “Barque sur le lac” by Komiku, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Komiku/.   Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  45: The Lady With The Ring | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3320

This week Carlea tells us a spooo-oooky story from Europe. Here is the gist: A lady "dies" (notice the quotation marks) and is buried, but when the grave robbers make their move, she wakes up. Too bad, that's only the beginning of her problems. I mean, you’re in a burial shroud and now you have to convince everyone you are alive? Yeah, we wouldn't believe her, either. Side note: imagine that 80s sitcom intro. Audio engineering and other music provided by Aaron Crossland.  44: The Flea | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2601

This week, Rachael and Carlea discuss a strange classic, “The Flea.” Nope, it’s not a follow-up to “The Fly” (side note—we love you, Jeff Goldblum). Instead it’s a tale by Giambattista Basile from the 1600s. Here’s a quick rundown: a flea grows to the size of a sheep. It’s killed, cause, like, who wants to feed that thing? The hide is placed in the throne room. And people come from all over to guess what kind of hide it is. Guess what they win? A princess! Because patriarchy. Lots of twists and turns ensue, and things mostly work out happily ever after. Audio engineering and other music provided by Aaron Crossland.  43: Little Red Cap | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2975

You may have heard this story. Here's the quick synopsis: girl strays off path to smell some flowers on way to Grandmothers house, meanwhile wolf eats Grandma and wolf tries to impersonate Grandma... Nope, we won't spoil the ending. But there is a lot to unpack here, good thing we have 49 minutes to talk about how problematic this is. Oh, and it's a cap, not a hood.  Editing and mixing by Aaron Crossland. Music by Mica B. Jones, https://micabjonesmusic.bandcamp.com.    Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe!  42: Blodeuwedd | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2231

This week, we meet Blodeuwedd. A Welsh lady that was originally a bunch of flowers only to be put together in the shape of a woman so that she can be the wife of some guy (Galatea anyone?). Blodeuwedd, though, has alternative plans for her marriage and they reek of Ye Olde Snapped episode. Except instead of poison, there is a caldron and buck. Yea, it’s confusing, but that’s folklore for ya. Top thing to remember: Blodeuwedd is a badass. Also, for the record, we are not advocating that you murder your husband (unless he made you out of flowers... then... maybe...?).  Audio Engineering by Aaron Crossland. Music by Tinsel Turtle.  41: The Girl and the Dead Man | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2448

In this week’s episode, three young girls separately go out to find their fortune (‘cause that’s what you do with your family... separate). Anywho, all three girls are offered Bannock (google it, it looks yummy), but there is a catch... If they take the larger piece then they will be cursed, the smaller one and they shall remain uncursed. Fast forward (bunch of stuff happens, like one of the sisters is murdered by a lady) and the youngest has to watch a dead guy. Hilarity ensues, ok, not really, it just gets more and more weird from there. But if there is something we have learned, Always. Take. The. Smaller. Piece. Wait a minute, this isn’t a metaphor for the 80 cents to the dollar thing, is it?   Audio Engineering by Aaron Crossland. Music by his band F. LaRocque, you can find him at his bandcamp site https://flarocque.bandcamp.com Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe!  40: Omie Wise | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2360

Rachael and Carlea talk murder ballads. You know, those old-fashioned pop songs that recount terrible crimes. Though we’re pretty sure they would be weird for Britney Spears to sing, murder ballads are a fascinating genre of folk music. This ballad is about Naomi Wise, who happened to give the wrong guy some water—no, really . . . Poor Naomi goes to meet her love by the water, tells him she’s pregnant, and learns he’s not going to marry her. You should probably be able to put together what happens next. Rule number one of a murder ballad: don’t go meet a guy in a remote location . . . OK?   Audio Engineering by Aaron Crossland. Music by his band F. LaRocque, you can find him at his bandcamp site: https://flarocque.bandcamp.com   Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe!  39: Rapunzel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3764

This week we have our favorite guest Mindy Scott on (again!). Mindy tells a story barely any of us have heard . . . Rapunzel. Here is the scene: Rapunzel is a plant (no, seriously) that a husband steals from a witch for his wife. The husband is caught and the witch tells him that he has to give up his first born. Seems like a fair trade, right? Fast forward a couple of years and Rapunzel is in a tower with an overprotective adoptive mother (or kidnapper?). The only way in and out of this tower is her long blonde hair. Things go on for a bit, then prince comes around to see what’s up. And what do you know . . . they hold hands (. . . and now she’s pregnant, kids.) The witch finds out and instead of grounding her daughter, she rips the prince’s eyes out and banishes Rapunzel (overreact much?). Rapunzel finds herself in a desert, having given birth to twins. The prince finally finds her and they live happily ever after. What can we say? This is not the Disney version (though we can all agree that Mandy Moore is a delight).  38: The Old Woman in the Wood | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2222

This week, Carlea tells a story from the little known Brother's Grimm (who dat, amirite?) The main character has to deal with more than just like, getting robbed... She has to deal with a mansplaining dove (gasp!). This has all the markings of a fairy tale: an old woman sorceress, doves/princes, and a lady who lives in a tree/man? It's confusing... But bear with us.  Music this week is: I.  37: Tannakin Skinker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2244

Oh? Tannakin? Yea, she just happens to have the face of a pig, but a "womanly figure" (eyeroll). Poor Tannakin... she eats her dinner from a silver trough... I mean, that sounds kind of great, right? Like imagine how much cereal you could eat... All cereal aside, this one is pretty problematic, so, buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.  This week's music is: David's Tune by Howie Mitchellhttp://freemusicarchive.org/music/Howie_Mitchell/Early_70s/01_DavidsTune Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  36: How a Loving Couple was Parted | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2128

To round out our series on African American folktales (#BlackHistoryMonth), Carlea tells the story of a lady who just wants some shoes and does something so drastic for them that even the devil is scared of her. (Hint: it has to do with parting a loving couple).  Music this week: Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplinhttp://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Joplin/Piano_Rolls_from_archiveorg/ScottJoplin-RagtimeDance1906 Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  35: Annie Christmas | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2154

We are still on our journey through stories from the African American Diaspora (specifically the Louisiana region #blackhistorymonth). This week, a badass lady named Annie Christmas. Annie takes no shit and is taking care of all the gender roles. Oftentimes referred to as the female counterpart to John Henry, this lady needs no counterpart. Seven foot tall keelboat captain who is abnormally strong. She wore pearls to show how many mens eyes she had gouged out. Annie... Did we just become best friends?  This week's music: Sailors Hornpipe Medley by Charles Dalmainehttp://freemusicarchive.org/music/Charles_Dalmaine_1238/Antique_Phonograph_Music_Program_09222009/Sailors_Hornpipe_Medley_1594  Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  34: The Six Witches | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2018

Our Black History Month series continues! This week: a story about six witches who fly in the face of the Capitalist machine. This one's pretty interesting and involves a horn or gourd in a chimney as well as some light teleportation. Trust us, you will not be bored.  Music this week is: Rotisserie Graveyard by Doctor Turtle http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Doctor_Turtle/The_Double-Down_Two-Step/Rotisserie_Graveyard Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  33: Big Liz | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1967

This week, a contemporary legend from Maryland (Femlore's home state!) In honor of Black History Month, we are going to be focusing on African American folklore. This story is about a brave slave who spys for the North and pays dearly. Like most other stories the victim is the one that haunts the place.  Music is: SPARKS by Nctrnmhttp://freemusicarchive.org/music/Nctrnm/Escapade_-_Single Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  45: Cinderella | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2682

This week, Rachael and Carlea tell you a classic! The one and only: Cinderella. In this version by the Brothers Grimm, Cinderella is an able bodied young woman who scales trees to run from the prince (can’t he take a hint?!). The stepsisters also decide that in order to fit into the glass slipper they should probably cut their feet. Yea, we were grossed out too. Music: Franz Schubert's Sonata in B Flat, D. 960 by David H Porter: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/David_H_Porter/Franz_Schuberts_Sonata_in_B_Flat_D_960 Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!
