Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore)

Summary: Folklore has been used for generations to share stories across cultures. Each week this season Rachael and her new co-host, Mindy, walk the winding path of folklore. They ask how the stories we tell influence today’s culture and how we view women. From murder ballads to fairytales, we discuss the power these stories have over us all. It won’t be just sad but maybe, just maybe, also uplifting. We are coming back to the podcast airwaves in April 2020.

But like, tip one: don't approach any at night around a cemetary. Does NO ONE watch scary movies anymore?? Geez...  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F.  54: La Tunda | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2489

Two words: shrimp. farts. But like, the shrimp doesn't fart... A monster farts on shrimp and then feeds it to people, making them catatonic. “Ewww, what kind of a monster is she??!” you may ask, but maybe she just had too much pizza and beer (judge much?). There is nothing more feminist then letting it all out. Bonus: Rachael doesn't need the shrimp part to make her husband catatonic. (You smell that, male gaze?)  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  53: Love Like Salt | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2532

What do you love the most important person in your life as much as? Rachael is set on indoor plumbing/ toilet seat. In this week's tale the protagonist proclaims that she loves her father as much as (you guessed it!): salt. Which, as we found out is not the cause of scurvy (just fyi). But such a declaration gets our dear protagonist nearly killed. Luckily though, she gets revenge by not passing the salt. Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F.  52: Tanabata | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2453

Ever heard of the story of Tanabata? If you lived in Japan then you probably have. It's a summer festival in Japan that centers around a love story. This one is as tragic as they come, but I mean that's what make an oscar winner, amirite? The best part about this story? "River of Heaven" is the name for milky way in Japanese, I mean, the poetry...  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F.  51: The Princess Who Never Smiled | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2399

This week, Carlea tells a story about a princess who really doesn't feel like smiling, thank you very much. Everyone goes to great lengths to get a little smile out of her, but maybe she just isn't in the mood, OK? Maybe that's just how her face looks. Women don't always have to be happy, you know. Even princesses can't be expected to be smiling all the time. Jeez. Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  50: The Fox Sister | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2443

This week, Rachael tells a pretty creepy story from Korea. The Fox Sister is about when you were a kid and you told your sister she was adopted, but like, instead of her being adopted, your sister was a fox demon who ate livers. Can't really blame her though... she just wants to be human. This one is pretty creepy, so get ready. Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F.  49: How the Giantess Guimara Became Small | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3252

How exactly does a giantess become small? I mean, there has to be a class where she gets called on and does not know the answer, right? Nope, that was just Rachael’s experience. Well, this Giantess is a badass who is a socereress and a princess (and would probably know all the answers at school). She has a can-do attitude and rescues her beau many-a-time. Better make her small—wouldn't want her to take up space.  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  Femlore Anniversa-minisode | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1372

It's officially our first birthday and that means it's time for the fem-lore-anniversa-mini-sode! For the anniversary episiode we talk our favorite femlore stories. Thank you all for all your support, and here is to another great year! Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.

 48: Zerendac | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3261

This week, Carlea and Rachael talk Zerendac. A tale that has everything you could possibly want: magical ghouls who feed people their ears, Women who get thrown into the sea while unconcious in a chest, a kitten that saves the day, and of course a dungeon with a magical staircase. Though this tale is classified under the "Bluebeard Tales," its actually all of your favorite fairytales in one: Bluebeard, Sleeping Beauty, and Crystal the Wise. This is basically The Justice League of fairytales.... Er, ummm.... Maybe it's more like the Avengers of Fairytales (there are a lot of layers in these characters). Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  47: The Good Wife and the Bad Husband | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2987

This week, Carlea and Rachael discuss a tale from India. This story kinda feels like the quintassential glass houses/stones situation, except with a woman who is shamelessly tricked—and a husband who isn't, but is so upset that he can't stop it, he goes along with it. Kinda like when you didn't love that song in highschool, but EVERYONE was listening to it (Hit Me Baby, anyone?)... That exact thing, except, you know, a marriage hangs in the balance and NOT Britney Spears, 'cause that would be real awk.   Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  46: Bride Bridekins | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3799

We're baaaaaack! This week, Rachael and Carlea discuss a fairy tale from a well-known Croatian children's collection published in the early 20th century. Bride Bridekins (a little on the nose, huh?), is about a lady who is really pretty and of course will be married one day. I mean, with a name like Bride Bridekins, wouldn't it be just awful if she ended up an unmarried power-suit-wearing-attorney? (Oh, the humanity!). Instead of fighting in court, Bride Bridekins fights a princess (well, not directly) over.... you guessed it... a man. This guy is really great though, they met about 10 seconds before they decided to get married, and it really seems like he loves her for all the right reasons (she's really pretty). The real hero of the story is a character named Muggish, and the Sun who very brutally destroys an army (think brain melting). This one has everything: lost keys, a magical old woman, Christmas cake, a vengeful princess, and a knight who is from the wrong side of the tracks (by "tracks" we mean a barren waseland where things are inexplicably covered with soot...) Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music:"Soundtrack" by Komiku (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Komiku/) Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  61: Bluebeard REMIX | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2186

This week is another classic from the Femlore vault: Bluebeard! This tale is about a super chill dude who really, really, REALLY doesn't want his new bride to go into his secret room, so naturally he gives her the key. What, like she even wanted to see what's in that room, anyway! No, seriously, you probably don't want to know what's in there, it's pretty gnarly. What's inside? Listen to find out! Audio engineering and original music provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  60: Barbara Allen REMIX | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1466

This week, Rachael and Carlea are still on a break... So we have decided to republish our episode on the beloved folk song Barbara Allen. Nothing really to see here, I mean, guy who barely knows lady is so saddened when she rejects him that he falls ill. She kicks him while he is down and then later feels bad. Instead of going to church or something she also dies and is buried next to the cause of her guilt. Seems totally fine right? right? right? Whew, buckle in, this one is a doozy.  Audio engineering and original music provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe! We have been receiving some wonderful story ideas, so keep sending them our way, listeners!
