44: The Flea

Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore) show

Summary: This week, Rachael and Carlea discuss a strange classic, “The Flea.” Nope, it’s not a follow-up to “The Fly” (side note—we love you, Jeff Goldblum). Instead it’s a tale by Giambattista Basile from the 1600s. Here’s a quick rundown: a flea grows to the size of a sheep. It’s killed, cause, like, who wants to feed that thing? The hide is placed in the throne room. And people come from all over to guess what kind of hide it is. Guess what they win? A princess! Because patriarchy. Lots of twists and turns ensue, and things mostly work out happily ever after. Audio engineering and other music provided by Aaron Crossland.
