Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore)

Summary: Folklore has been used for generations to share stories across cultures. Each week this season Rachael and her new co-host, Mindy, walk the winding path of folklore. They ask how the stories we tell influence today’s culture and how we view women. From murder ballads to fairytales, we discuss the power these stories have over us all. It won’t be just sad but maybe, just maybe, also uplifting. We are coming back to the podcast airwaves in April 2020.

 18: The Old Hag | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1923

"You've just been hagged," is not a your mama joke, it's a terrifying phenomemnon that many Newfoundlanders are all too familiar with. Here's the rundown: you hear someone coming up your stairs, slowly making there way toward you... What happens next is likely an explanation for sleep paralysis, but it doesn't make it any less horrifying.  Music: Music is Interlude [Limbo] by Yoshimasu Kamiya: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Yoshimasu_Kamiya/Ghost_Notes_Mixter_Samples/05_Interlude_Limbo

 17: Bloody Mary | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1975

Boo! (Gotcha!) Our spooklore countdown to Halloween is in full swing! This week Rachael and Carlea talk one of the most famous Legends around: Bloody Mary. But, after hearing the true story behind the taunt "Bloody Mary I stole your baby," you might find yourself wondering who the real monster is.  Music: Evie Gloom by Alex Mac: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Ian_Alex_Mac/Cues Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  16: The Juniper Tree | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2257

The ingredients of this story are enough to make a listener believe in Spooklore. After all, you've got a woman who gets crushed by a stone, a little boy who gets his neck chopped off by the lid of a chest, add a little bit of cannabilism, and voila! you have the Juniper Tree. In this week's episode Rachael and Carlea ask the serious, hard-hitting questions, like, "how can a bird carry a millstone?" All of that and more revealed in this week's episode.  Music: “Seeker” and “Harbor” by Kai Engel Don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  15: Lady Bathory | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2142

This week, we discuss Countess Elizabeth Bathory . . . and the questions that persist around the stories of her terrible cruelty. Was the "Blood Countess" as evil as they say, or was this a case of exaggerated charges to persecute a powerful woman? This week our episode comes to us by way of Nigeria. No, listener, you did not read that title wrong. Here is the play by play: disobedient daughter falls in love, finds out that said love is a skull, hilarity ensues. Ok, maybe not hilarity, but some definite patriarchy is present.  Music: Dead Waters by Rest You Sleeping Giant And... don't forget to rate, review, subscribe!  11: The Pastor's Wife | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2159

Get the tissues out, listener, this one is a doozy. The Pastor's Wife is a Danish folktale that is super depressing—and problematic. Firstly, our heroine decides she doesn't want children (THE NERVE!) What's a 16th century pre-birth control married fox to do, but throw some stones down a well? We all know this ends badly, right?  9: The Wife of Bath's Tale | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2239

Our first listener recommended story is finally here! This story is like the plot of “What Women Want.” Except, you know, it happened in the 1400s, and instead of Mel Gibson, it’s a knight with a lusty liver. The knight (AKA Gibson) travels the world asking what women want (because we all know what every one of us want, duh). Take a listen! And hey, you might not even miss Helen Hunt… Ugh, who are we kidding? Music: "Gigue" and "Gavotte" by Musick's Recreation. Milena Cord-to-Krax from the album Una Reverencia a Bach
