40: Omie Wise

Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore) show

Summary: Rachael and Carlea talk murder ballads. You know, those old-fashioned pop songs that recount terrible crimes. Though we’re pretty sure they would be weird for Britney Spears to sing, murder ballads are a fascinating genre of folk music. This ballad is about Naomi Wise, who happened to give the wrong guy some water—no, really . . . Poor Naomi goes to meet her love by the water, tells him she’s pregnant, and learns he’s not going to marry her. You should probably be able to put together what happens next. Rule number one of a murder ballad: don’t go meet a guy in a remote location . . . OK?   Audio Engineering by Aaron Crossland. Music by his band F.
