Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore)

Summary: Folklore has been used for generations to share stories across cultures. Each week this season Rachael and her new co-host, Mindy, walk the winding path of folklore. They ask how the stories we tell influence today’s culture and how we view women. From murder ballads to fairytales, we discuss the power these stories have over us all. It won’t be just sad but maybe, just maybe, also uplifting. We are coming back to the podcast airwaves in April 2020.

 62: La Candileja | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2439

This week's story is a listener suggestion: La Candelija. This is a "holier than thou" story. Here is the gist: woman raises questionable men, but then she's at fault? Sounds like some fairytale nonsense to us.  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  61: La Patasola | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3129

This week we bring you the weird/horrific/amazing story of La Patasola (a listener suggestion). La Patasola was married to a tyrant, and when she had an affair the husband killed the other man, and cut off one of La Patasola's legs—and burned their house to the ground (asshole amirite?). In death La Patasola stalks the forests of Colombia looking for her next male victim...  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. The tale is basically a ghost story and soap opera in one... with a sprinkle of problematic patriarchy on top.  Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com.  59: The Condor Seeks a Wife | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2889

"The Condor Seeks a Wife" is pretty misleading, since the condor doesn’t really seek a wife, mostly he just pretends to be something else and then carries a poor, unsuspecting woman away. Real messed up right? Wait, it gets worse. The woman, after having some kids with the condor, just wants to get back to her life. Does she make it back? Listen to find out. Main moral of the story: damn condors, ruin EVERYTHING. Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music: “Ladies, Take Me With You” by Doctor Turtle, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Doctor_Turtle/. Obligatory and friendly reminder to rate, review, and subscribe, please!
