Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore)
Summary: Folklore has been used for generations to share stories across cultures. Each week this season Rachael and her new co-host, Mindy, walk the winding path of folklore. They ask how the stories we tell influence today’s culture and how we view women. From murder ballads to fairytales, we discuss the power these stories have over us all. It won’t be just sad but maybe, just maybe, also uplifting. We are coming back to the podcast airwaves in April 2020.

This week, Carlea shares a story from Hans Christian Andersen about a picky prince and a very sensitive princess. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music: “Come and Find Me” by Eric Skiff, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Eric_Skiff/. Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! This week, Carlea and Rachael team up with Chelsey Weber-Smith of the Skylark podcast American Hysteria to discuss contemporary legends like The Hook and how folklore expresses -- and encourages -- panic about teen sex. This week, Rachael shares a Gullah story about a beautiful woman who's not all she seems, much to the peril of her new husband. But hey, who hasn't had the urge to take off all their skin each night and go flying through the air? Oh, just the Boo Hag? OK . . . Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. This week, guest Lauren Crossland-Marr shares a story about a Vestal virgin, a she-wolf, and some serious sibling conflict. You may know it as the story of Romulus and Remus, but here at Feminist Folklore, we're interested in what role women have to play in our foundational cultural narratives. Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. This week, Carlea shares a story from Ukraine about a girl, her dead boyfriend, and a big lake of tears. And OK, it's tragic and everything, but also? Relatable. We're back in the new year with a live episode from the Chicago Podcast Festival, where Carlea and Rachael discuss a local ghost story. You know the story -- girl meets boy, boy falls in love with girl, girl vanishes into thin air, boy finds out girl has been dead for years. A classic! Thanks to the Chicago Podcast Festival for having us! Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. Live music provided by Tinsel Turtle (Mica Jones and Aaron Crossland). You can listen to their self-titled debut album on Apple Music, Spotify, Bandcamp, or wherever else you find your music. Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! This week, Rachael shares a story from Korea about a series of deals that go from bad to worse, and somehow the heroine's always the one who gets the short end of the stick. She gets a happy ending, but we still have some questions. Like, is she still a part-time lotus, or what? Audio engineering provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music: “Go Tell It On The Molehill" by Doctor Turtle, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Doctor_Turtle/. Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! This week, Rachael and Carlea share stories of holiday monsters: La Befana from Italy and Mari Lwyd from Wales. Except neither of these spooky figures is quite exactly what they seem . . . Funny how easily we jump to vilify women, isn't it? And on that cheerful note, happy holidays! Audio engineering and story music provided by Aaron Crossland. You can listen to his band, F. This week, Carlea shares a story about an adventurous girl and a snake who respects her autonomy until a no become a yes. LaRocque, at https://flarocque.bandcamp.com. Story music: “Full of Stars” by Philipp Weigl, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Philipp_Weigl/. Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe!
