39: Rapunzel

Femlore Podcast (formally Feminist Folklore) show

Summary: This week we have our favorite guest Mindy Scott on (again!). Mindy tells a story barely any of us have heard . . . Rapunzel. Here is the scene: Rapunzel is a plant (no, seriously) that a husband steals from a witch for his wife. The husband is caught and the witch tells him that he has to give up his first born. Seems like a fair trade, right? Fast forward a couple of years and Rapunzel is in a tower with an overprotective adoptive mother (or kidnapper?). The only way in and out of this tower is her long blonde hair. Things go on for a bit, then prince comes around to see what’s up. And what do you know . . . they hold hands (. . . and now she’s pregnant, kids.) The witch finds out and instead of grounding her daughter, she rips the prince’s eyes out and banishes Rapunzel (overreact much?). Rapunzel finds herself in a desert, having given birth to twins. The prince finally finds her and they live happily ever after. What can we say? This is not the Disney version (though we can all agree that Mandy Moore is a delight).
