FLOW #24 - Why Sleep Is More Important Than Exercise and Healthy Eating | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 579

You're listening to the 24th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is on the MOST important activity that I partake in other than meditation...and it's sleeping 7-8 hours a day. 1. Sleeping Helps Prevent Diabetes and Heart DiseaseEveryone has problems falling asleep from time to time, but if you are chronically suffering from a lack of sleep, your odds of developing heart disease or type 2 diabetes will significantly increase. With this in mind, individuals who have insomnia, sleep apnea or another complication that makes it difficult to have a restful night should consider talking to their doctor about getting a sleep aid. It is also important to note that regular exercise and following a set bedtime and wake-up routine will help.2. Sleep Makes You Feel GoodWe all know the glorious feeling of waking up after a good night’s sleep. Our minds feel sharper, our bodies have fewer aches, and we’re more physically and emotionally equipped to take on the rest of the day. Unfortunately, getting to this happy stage is very difficult for some people. If you struggle with falling or staying asleep, it is wise to follow some scientifically proven methods for fixing the problem. For example, a post on the science of sleeping suggests cooling your face, dropping the temperature in your bedroom to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and taking the rather unorthodox seeming approach of trying to force yourself to stay awake while lying in bed. Apparently, those who stare at the ceiling instead of having their eyes closed typically fall asleep more quickly.3. Sleeping Helps with Weight ManagementHave you ever noticed that you feel hungrier when you are sleep deprived? Researchers from Hendrix College studied this phenomenon with college students. They conclusively proved that a lack of sleep leads to an increased daily consumption of approximately 300 calories. This happens because the brain needs sleep to perform its best. When it doesn’t get enough, it burns through glucose, carbs, and other human fuels more quickly than usual in an attempt to keep you alert and fully functional. If you want to lose weight, eight hours of sleep should be part of your nightly routine.4. Naps Boost ProductivityStudies by NASA and Dr. Sara C. Mednick have found that naps serve another vital function in our overall sleep needs. In fact, if you take a nap of at least 26 minutes between 1 and 4 p.m., you’ll experience a productivity boost of up to 34 percent. When you consider the impact that productivity levels can have on everything from your job performance to completing personal tasks, it becomes easy to see why everyone should be given a nap break during the day.You may not be able to get your employer to sanction this idea, but consider using part of your lunch break to help you catch a few extra ZZZs.5. Sleeping Helps Your Immune SystemYour immune system is constantly at work attempting to protect you from a long list of potential illnesses. You can help it have a high rate of success by getting at least seven hours of sleep per night. Sadly, those who are unable to do this will suffer from an impaired immune system that leaves them more prone to catching a cold or the flu.One study even found that sleep deprivation following a vaccination could reduce the effects of the vaccine by as much as 50 percent. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that you get enough sleep if you wish to remain as healthy as possible.6. Sleep Provides A Cognitive BoostIf you have a big test or presentation tomorrow, the absolute best thing you can do for yourself is to get a good night’s sleep. This is because researchers have determined that there is a strong link between sleep and cognitive performance. When you don’t get enough sleep, your brain will experience reduced blood flow. As a result, your cognitive speed,...

FLOW #23 - Anchor Yourself in the Present Moment to Find your Life's Purpose | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 518

You're listening to the 23rd episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about the actual key to finding your life's purpose...and no you can't find it with a mathematical equation. We are all born with a deep and meaningful purpose that we have to discover. Your purpose is not something you need to make up; it’s already there. You have to uncover it in order to create the life you want. You may ask yourself, “What is my purpose in life?” You can begin to discover your passion or your purpose by exploring two things:What do you love to do? What comes easily to you?Of course, it takes work to develop your talents- even the most gifted musician still has to practice-but it should feel natural, like rowing downstream rather than upstream. I love to teach, to write, to coach, to facilitate, to train, and to develop transformational seminars, workshops, and courses. I love to bring other leaders together for conferences and to co-create new approaches to our work. These things come easy for me. Although I invested many years in learning how to master these skills, I loved every minute of it. In other words, work is required, but suffering is not. If you are struggling and suffering, you are probably not living on purpose. Please let me know how you like these daily FLOW episodes. Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter or via email mark@vudream.comHumans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2PodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.metry.9Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Mark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/

FLOW #22 - How Google & Butter Saved My Life | The Case for Targeted Advertising to Create Technological Serendipity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 402

You're listening to the 22nd episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about a downwards spiral I fell into a few years ago and how I solved it. The year was 2016. I had finished my first year of college and I didn’t gain the freshmen 15, I gained the freshmen 50. I went from 165 to 215 in less than 3 months. This was prompted by binge eating bags of sour patch kids (70+ grams of sugar) every night because I disliked where I was in my life. In addition, I was chugging down 2-3 cans of heavily caffeinated red bull every single day.At first, I was doing it for more energy, but I quickly realized after a week I’d get extremely tired after drinking a can of red bull. Which led me to the discovery of scientifically backed studies that showed diminished performance after 200mg of caffeine. Tired, depressed, and anxious I had completely given up on life and spiraled down even more into binge eating other foods and napping extensively throughout the day. My typical day looked like this:- Wake up at 8 am for class.- Drink a red bull on the way.- Come back from class and nap until noon for my next class.- Wake up, drink another red bull on my way.- Get out of class and eat horrible food at my school’s cafeteria like fried chicken fingers and fries.- Come back from classes for the day and drink another red bull.- Binge on watching TV Shows- Take another nap. - Wake up and eat dinner and continue watching tv shows.- Stay up until 4 am.- Repeat. Needless to say, I was in a detrimental cycle that I wasn’t consciously aware of at that time. It took me about 3 months to realize what was going on and the fact that I needed to break out of this cycle before things got even worse. Desperately looking for answers, I turned to the internet to help. After many hours of googling, I found way too much information about what I should do. I looked into every single diet and potential solution and the wide range of information left me even more confused. Become vegan, eat fat, don’t eat fat, eat only in these hours of the day..blah blah blah! Throughout history, the ability to have more choices and options in front of you was a sign of luxury and prestige. However, with the internet, information has been commoditized and you now have more choices than you will ever become aware of forever. Feeling hopeless and lost I had completely given up and I stopped looking. The following day I was on a website and a google advertisement popped up for this strange thing I’ve never heard of called “Bulletproof Butter Coffee” I can’t find the original ad banner but I remember it had a nice looking coffee cup in the image, and I thought “HEY I like coffee what’s this?”Clicking on the banner led me down the rabbit hole of discovering bulletproof coffee, which is the critically acclaimed, mycotoxin free coffee with grass-fed butter and MCT oil.Huh? What? How is this even a thing, this sounds like the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Luckily, I hit the order now button and went to the grocery store to buy some Kerrygold grass-fed butter. After receiving the shipment, I tried it next morning and it was an interesting experience. It actually tasted awesome and I figured I’d stick with this for a while. In case you happen to live in 1970 and think fat is bad for you…It turns out the creator of this, Dave Asprey also has a Bulletproof diet regiment which calls for eating plenty of good fats and wholesome vegetables. Long story short, I ended up losing over 50 pounds in an extremely short period of around a month. All from simply eating fats and vegetables. My brain felt like it had turned on for the first time in my life and I could think clearly about my life. This diet regiment led me to a serious amount of...

 FLOW #21 - Mindful Cooking as a Joyful Meditation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 357

You're listening to the 21st episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about mindful cooking as a joyous and peaceful meditation."Cooking is meditation. For me, when I cook whether I am playing music or not, I am in the moment with my food. That's why I think food tastes so good sometimes because you are one with the food. Think of cooking as music; you don't race to get to the end of the song to understand it - cooking food is like this for me." - Max La MannaWhy is Cooking Actually Meditation?1. Simple Tasks Encourage PeaceOne of the most basic forms of meditation is finding peace and enjoyment in simple daily tasks. Cooking is a simple daily task. You can also attempt complex recipes to give yourself more practice at both cooking and meditation. Easy soups and casseroles now become a peace-enriched event. Soak up even more peace by trying a more in-depth recipe by extending your experience in the kitchen.2. Silent ReflectionSilent reflection is a great way to get in touch with your emotions and thoughts. If you let your mind wander, there are many realizations and epiphanies that you can allow yourself to acknowledge. Cooking is a great place to let your mind wander as you perform the simple tasks, and be aware of where your thoughts take you.3. Therapeutic Relaxation through RepetitionRepetition is relaxing and therapeutic by focusing only on the task at hand. Cooking is full of repetitive action, from cutting, to peeling, to stirring, to grating, to mixing, and much more.4. MindfulnessMerrium-Webster defines Mindfulness as: 1. the quality or state of being mindful 2. the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis; also: such a state of awareness. Cooking is a great activity in which to practice Mindfulness. Be present in the moment to take in the sensory information of the food you are cooking. The smells, the colors, the tastes, the feeling of the food, and the sounds are all senses to be aware of. What emotions do these experiences evoke? What thoughts do they bring to mind? Be aware of these emotions and thoughts, and acknowledge them.5. Loving-Kindness MeditationThe Loving-Kindness level of meditation takes the most focus and attention. You may need to work up to this level before you attempt it. You must develop a love for yourself first, and then work toward others. Infuse the food with love and kindness by actively reflecting on yourself or the loved ones you are cooking for as you cook. Love is the secret ingredient of the tastiest dishes, after all! Typically, you would visualize yourself or your loved ones smiling at you, and feeling happy. Visualization is just one form of the Loving-Kindness Meditation. To incorporate this into cooking, visualize yourself or your loved ones smiling and happy as they (or you) eat the food you have prepared.Source: pickthebrain.comPlease let me know how you like these daily FLOW episodes. Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter or via email mark@vudream.comHumans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2PodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.metry.9Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/LinkedIn -

FLOW #20 - Welcome to the Virtual Reality Metaverse to Improve Human Potential | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 476

You're listening to the 20th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about the current state of virtual reality and where it lies for future human augmentation for self-improvement and development. Please let me know how you like these daily FLOW episodes.- Virtual reality (VR) immerses users in a fully artificial digital environment.- Augmented reality (AR) overlays virtual objects on the real-world environment.- Mixed reality (MR) not just overlays but anchors virtual objects to the real world. The definition of virtual reality comes, naturally, from the definitions of both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’. The definition of ‘virtual’ is near and reality is what we experience as human beings. So the term ‘virtual reality’ basically means ‘near-reality’. This could, of course, mean anything but it usually refers to a specific type of reality emulation. We know the world through our senses and perception systems. We all learned that we have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing. These are however only our most obvious sense organs. The truth is that humans have many more senses than this, such as a sense of balance for example. These other sensory inputs, plus some special processing of sensory information by our brains ensures that we have a rich flow of information from the environment to our minds.Everything that we know about our reality comes by way of our senses. In other words, our entire experience of reality is simply a combination of sensory information and our brains sense-making mechanisms for that information. It stands to reason then, that if you can present your senses with made-up information, your perception of reality would also change in response to it. You would be presented with a version of reality that isn’t really there, but from your perspective, it would be perceived as real. Something we would refer to as a virtual reality. So, in summary, virtual reality entails presenting our senses with a computer-generated virtual environment that we can explore in some fashion. In technical terms…Answering “what is virtual reality” in technical terms is straight-forward. Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer-generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. That person becomes part of this virtual world or is immersed in this environment and whilst there, is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions. How is virtual reality achieved?Although we talk about a few historical early forms of virtual reality elsewhere on the site, today virtual reality is usually implemented using computer technology. There is a range of systems that are used for this purpose, such as headsets, omnidirectional treadmills and special gloves. These are used to actually stimulate our senses together in order to create the illusion of reality. This is more difficult than it sounds, since our senses and brains are evolved to provide us with a finely synchronized and mediated experience. If anything is even a little off we can usually tell. This is where you’ll hear terms such as immersiveness and realism enter the conversation. These issues that divide convincing or enjoyable virtual reality experiences from jarring or unpleasant ones are partly technical and partly conceptual. Virtual reality technology needs to take our physiology into account. For example, the human visual field does not look like a video frame. We have (more or less) 180 degrees of vision and although you are not always consciously aware of your peripheral vision, if it were gone you’d notice. Similarly when what your eyes and the vestibular system in your ears tell you are in conflict it can cause motion sickness. Which is what happens to some people on boats or when they read while in a car.If an...

 #90 - Nathan Chan | Origin of Foundr Magazine, a Multi-Million Dollar Media Entrepreneurship Company | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2349

"I was launching it, literally just for fun." - Nathan Chan, Founder of Foundr Magazine.Foundr Magazine is a digital internet-based magazine app on the Apple and Google Play store targeted at young entrepreneurs and early upstarts. Featured hundreds of entrepreneurs like Arianna Huffington, Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, Tim Ferriss, Richard Branson, Daymond John, and Seth Godin.Foundr is on a mission to inspire the world of the possibilities of entrepreneurship, and become the ultimate resource and guide for entrepreneurs. Our focus is on delving deep into the world of the entrepreneur focusing on their failures, challenges, processes and really trying to help our readers learn from successful entrepreneurs before them.Nathan started Foundr in March, 2013 with no knowledge about entrepreneurship, publishing, apps, editorial or design and a very small budget. Fast forward to now, Foundr is a top 10 ranked ‘Business & Investing’ magazine in the Appstore sitting alongside publications such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, Fortune, Fast Company and HBR. "When I started Foundr, I had no idea that I wanted to build a big startup or service millions of people. It was just like a side hustle project and yeah, it was a big jump going from IT to online marketing. I think more of the big jump though is not knowing anything about publishing a magazine and producing content. That’s been a very steep and big learning curve. We worked it out along the way and made it work purely off the fact that I think I have a pretty good eye on what people are interested in. I know what excites me tends to excite other people. From there, I just followed my gut. Before I started Foundr, I knew that podcasts were hot. I also identified that there wasn’t really a magazine in the space targeting aspiring novice-stage entrepreneurs, early-stage startup founders and also targeting young people. All the business publications out there go with the assumption that you’ve already started a business.I thought that it would be a brilliant idea to launch a digital magazine since I knew that print was, and still is to this day, a dying trade. I also had a lot of questions that I wanted to answer myself as an aspiring entrepreneur. I thought it would just be a ton of fun and a great side hustle project. I was really interested in marketing too and that’s a big passion piece of mine. So, taking all those things into consideration, we launched Foundr."- https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathanhchan/- foundr.comPlease do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter or via email mark@vudream.comHumans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2PodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.metry.9Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Mark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/

FLOW #19 - Why Mindfulness Meditation Is The Most Important Life Skill for Self-Awareness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 822

You're listening to the 19th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about the most impactful activity I participate in morning and night. Mindfulness meditation of course! A study from UCLA found that long-term meditators had better-preserved brains than non-meditators as they aged. Participants who’d been meditating for an average of 20 years had more grey matter volume throughout the brain — although older meditators still had some volume loss compared to younger meditators, it wasn’t as pronounced as the non-meditators. "We expected rather small and distinct effects located in some of the regions that had previously been associated with meditating," said study author Florian Kurth. "Instead, what we actually observed was a widespread effect of meditation that encompassed regions throughout the entire brain."One of the most interesting studies in the last few years, carried out at Yale University, found that mindfulness meditation decreases activity in the default mode network (DMN), the brain network responsible for mind-wandering and self-referential thoughts – a.k.a., “monkey mind.” The DMN is “on” or active when we’re not thinking about anything in particular, when our minds are just wandering from thought to thought. Since mind-wandering is typically associated with being less happy, ruminating, and worrying about the past and future, it’s the goal for many people to dial it down. Several studies have shown that meditation, through its quieting effect on the DMN, appears to do just this. And even when the mind does start to wander, because of the new connections that form, meditators are better at snapping back out of it.A review study last year at Johns Hopkins looked at the relationship between mindfulness meditation and its ability to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain. Researcher Madhav Goyal and his team found that the effect size of meditation was moderate, at 0.3. If this sounds low, keep in mind that the effect size for antidepressants is also 0.3, which makes the effect of meditation sound pretty good. Meditation is, after all an active form of brain training. “A lot of people have this idea that meditation means sitting down and doing nothing,” says Goyal. “But that’s not true. Meditation is an active training of the mind to increase awareness, and different meditation programs approach this in different ways.” Meditation isn’t a magic bullet for depression, as no treatment is, but it’s one of the tools that may help manage symptoms. In 2011, Sara Lazar and her team at Harvard found that mindfulness meditation can actually change the structure of the brain: Eight weeks of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and memory, and in certain areas of the brain that play roles in emotion regulation and self-referential processing. There were also decreases in brain cell volume in the amygdala, which is responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress – and these changes matched the participants’ self-reports of their stress levels, indicating that meditation not only changes the brain, but it changes our subjective perception and feelings as well. In fact, a follow-up study by Lazar’s team found that after meditation training, changes in brain areas linked to mood and arousal were also linked to improvements in how participants said they felt — i.e., their psychological well-being. So for anyone who says that activated blobs in the brain don’t necessarily mean anything, our subjective experience – improved mood and well-being – does indeed seem to be shifted through meditation as well.Having problems concentrating isn’t just a kid thing – it affects millions of grown-ups as well, with an ADD diagnosis or not. Interestingly but not surprisingly, one of the central benefits of meditation is that it improves attention and...

FLOW #18 - Managing Social Anxiety | Introverts Guide to Parties & Gatherings | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 542

You're listening to the 18th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is about how I beat and continue to manage my social anxiety as an introvert at social gatherings like parties with many people you don't know. Social anxiety is the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. You could say social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being negatively judged and evaluated by other people. It is a pervasive disorder and causes anxiety and fear in most all areas of a person's life. It is chronic because it does not go away on its own. Only direct cognitive-behavioral therapy can change the brain, and help people overcome social anxiety.People with social anxiety are many times seen by others as being shy, quiet, backward, withdrawn, inhibited, unfriendly, nervous, aloof, and disinterested.Paradoxically, people with social anxiety want to make friends, be included in groups, and be involved and engaged in social interactions. But having social anxiety prevents people from being able to do the things they want to do. Although people with social anxiety want to be friendly, open, and sociable, it is fear (anxiety) that holds them back. The feelings that accompany social anxiety include anxiety, high levels of fear, nervousness, automatic negative emotional cycles, racing heart, blushing, excessive sweating, dry throat and mouth, trembling, and muscle twitches. In severe situations, people can develop a dysmorphia concerning part of their body (usually the face) in which they perceive themselves irrationally and negatively. Lack of professional and knowledgeable therapists is the biggest and most relevant problem to overcoming social anxiety. While it can be done, and a vast amount of clinical and research evidence supports this, overcoming social anxiety is difficult because of the scarcity of treatment facilities for people with this persistent anxiety disorder. Often, we are led to the conclusion that effective therapy -- whether from a psychologist or from a non-licensed person -- comes only from people who have experienced this disorder themselves. Twenty years of experience points to the fact that people who have lived with this disorder and overcome it, make the best group leaders. In fact, only 7 percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates--and 8 percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup. What those who reach the top do share are four key behaviors that anyone can master: they are decisive; they are reliable, delivering what they promised when the promise it, without exception; they adapt boldly, and they engage with stakeholders without shying away from conflict.
