 Moovin & Groovin: S1E3 - Yoga for Cyclists | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:04

Claire Deacon guides us through some of the best yoga poses for cyclists, explaining that cycling is one of the few activities in which muscles contract concentrically (so, while shortening), rather than eccentrically (while lengthening). The repetitive motion in peddling can cause the muscle fibres to shorten - this is also known as 'adaptive muscle shortening.' This will not only cause an imbalance in your muscles and put you at risk of injury, but it can really jeopardise your posture too. Shortened muscles can impact your ability, comfort, aerodynamics and eventually lead to injury. Most cycling injuries are caused by tight muscles or a limited range of motion. By targeted stretching you can lengthen your muscles, unlock your full potential and extend the years you can cycle. Claire talks us through some yoga poses that will help you as a cyclist. There are images of all the poses that Claire talks about in the show notes with this episode on our website. WiSP Sports Radio is brought to you by Hyland's Earache Drops.  From Pride to Pickleball to Potty Parity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:10

This month Zoe kicks off by making the men’s World Cup football about women and their involvement, Sports Psychologist Karen Nimmo gives us some tips to being assertive, we celebrate LGBTQI + month with the Central Pulse netball team, and we find out what heck is Pickleball. Plus of course a bit of cricket and an update on the toilets at the Basin Reserve. RNZ’s resident football buff, and fellow music geek Yadana Saw is this month’s co-host. Karen Nimmo explains assertiveness, what is it and how we make the most of it. As many of you will know June is LGBTQI+ awareness month, several sports teams and associations are doing their bit to show their support for the community. The New Zealand rugby team – the All Blacks – have started wearing black jerseys that turn to rainbows when pulled. Now the Central Pulse netball team is lacing up for the ANZ Premiership Games. Pulse and Silver Ferns shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio has been a driving force behind getting the team to wear rainbow laces. Have you ever heard of Pickleball?  Well according to the USA Pickleball Association the sport is exploding and it’s made its way to our shores. The sport, which is kind of like tennis with a twist, even has its own online channel… yes really. It was first invented in 1965 as a family game and has rules in place to even the playing field meaning it’s a mixed gender and mixed ability sport. It arrived first in Auckland in the past few years and has now spread across the North Island with various clubs popping up. But what is it actually? And why is it one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Pickleball New Zealand co-ordinator  explains. And it wouldn’t be Fair Play without some mention of cricket. The White Ferns broke world records recently against Ireland, and have been doing well against England and South Africa in the recent tri-series.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
