On this month's episode of The Sailing Show, Abby Ehler chats to offshore sailor Hannah Diamond, as well as catching up with recently crowned World Sailor of the Year, Carolijn Brouwer about the latest news in in the world of Olympic sailing.  Hannah Diamond was part of the British Olympic Squad leading up to the British Olympic trials for Beijing 2008 in the laser Radial class, moving into the Nacra catamaran class for the lead up to the 2016 Olympic trials, which included winning Silver at the World Championships.  Hannah has expanded her sailing skills racing keelboats, and offshore, most recently as part of Vestas 11th Hour Racing competing in the Volvo Ocean Race.  Recently there have been some quite dramatic changes to the landscape of the sailing classes elected for the 2024 Olympic Games, which has ruffled feathers in the sailing world. In this week’s episode, Kristin Ray talks to Brooke Fletcher, Digital Host for Fox Sports Detroit as part our Young Female Professionals Series.  Brooke she tells us about how patience and appreciation helped her get to this amazing point in her career.  She also stresses the importance of capitalizing on opportunities and not shying away from ones that might not seem perfect on paper. Brooke tells us how she knew she wanted to work in sports and what decisions she made a long the way to make the dream come true.  She started this summer in working with Fox Sports in Detroit and tells us about her role and responsibilities.  Brooke also talks about the importance of social media for women wanting to work in sports and how she honed your social media skills.  For young women who desire to work in broadcast sports, Brooke shares advice about what would have made her journey smoother or quicker.  One of topics surrounding women in broadcast sports that has been swirling around in the past year or so is the trolling that on-air talent sometimes receive on social media so Kristin asks and Brooke if she had any experience with that and if so how she handled it.  They also discuss the pros and cons of being so young and having such success at such a relatively young age.  A must listen for any young women debating a career in sports journalism.    For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. Shannon encourage coaches to take a progressive approach, to develop a vision and a strategic plan.  "It's important to encourage, teach, and re-enforce , and extremely important to be positive the majority of the time, to reward good work ethic, good attitude and good intentions."  Shannon's guest is Kristen Hagg is the General Manager of the Calgary Inferno — a professional women’s hockey league of the CWHL.  Kristen previously played for the Inferno before becoming the Assistant General Manager. She is also an attorney.  This week's sidebar topic is stress. Coaching can be stressful;  stress plants the seeds of illness, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, and increased blood pressure.  The Circle: S2E1 - Fiona Ryan - A Roller Coaster Ride | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:34

Fiona Ryan née Boyce played 101 games for the Hockeyroos from 2009 - 2012. Growing up in Western Australia in family so closely linked with hockey, there was no doubt that Fiona would make her mark on the game. Known for her fitness and determination, Fiona won gold at the 2009 Commonwealth Games and played at the London Olympics despite breaking her collar bone just six months out. Some might say that playing hockey at an international level is mentally draining and strenuous on the body, but this was nothing compared to the battle that Fiona faced after her retirement following the London Olympics. Fatigue, night sweats and a lump were just some of the symptoms that Fiona experienced in the lead up to her diagnoses of Hodgkins Lymphoma less than one year after she retired from the game.  Listen to Fiona share what it was like growing up in a hockey family, playing in the London Olympics, overcoming her battle with cancer, and now transitioning into a career as a lawyer and being the mother of two children.
