Hockey Talk: S1E12 - The Gift of Scoring and Excellence | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:28

Shannon's gift to you this holiday season is all about the gift of scoring and of excellence. How do we nail that goal and become consistent as a player?  Shannon encourages you to take pride in having the most powerful offense possible. This approach makes it more enjoyable for the players to play, creates more scoring chances, which makes the game more entertaining and fun, and obviously scoring more goals and wins more games. In today’s game the players are faster and more skilled. As coaches we need to work on individual offensive skill development, tactical skill development and team offense. Some examples of individual skill development to improve offensive skills are quick release shooting, one timers, escapes, squaring for the puck when attacking rebounds. Some examples of tactical skill development are delays – hit the second wave, initiate the cycle, let double drive go through and skate lateral with the puck and shoot with traffic going to the net.   Shannon also explains the formula for creating your own excellence. There is a simple philosophy called "between the lines” - the starting line and the finish line. In between these two lines is a space, a blank canvas, and a mystery to be solved. This space is an opportunity to create and invent - to create what does not yet exist - to become who we not yet are. Each day is fresh and new, and an opportunity to build on what we have already done. An opportunity to start over if you need to or want to. We can create a new practice, rid of an old bad habit and start a new positive habit. We can begin an adventure in pursuit of excellence. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.  The Circle: S2E2 - Georgie Parker says Footie is Favorite | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:32

Being good enough to represent your country in one sport is a sensational achievement; but imagine being an elite athlete for two sports. Australia have had a number of female cross code athletes of late including best and fairest Erin Phillips from basketball and AFLW, soccer and cricket superstar Ellyse Perry and let us not forgot tennis and cricket talent Ash Barty. One hockey player looking to make her mark in AFLW is ex Hockeyroo Georgie Parker. Hear about the differences in training and professionalism from the resident funny lady and tweeter extraordinaire. Make sure you listen until the end and take part in Georgies interesting Twitter poll questions for yourself - is soup a meal? The former hockey player remarked: "I was the fittest I could be and the strongest I could be and did everything right because I wanted to do not just myself proud but I wanted to do my sport proud."  But she admits that making the switch was a big leap: "[It was] a massive hit to the ego really, I’m going from being one of the best in the country and one of the best teams in the world to essentially being the worst in my team and I hated that."  And with it come the trophy scars: "I’ve been a Collingwood member for what a year now and I’ve already lost one tooth."  Hockey Talk: S1E11 - Attitude & Instincts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:32

On this week's episode of Hockey Talk, Coach Shannon Miller talks us through the known and unknown aspects of coaching, the challenges of balancing the personalities and bringing out the best of available talent. Our coaches and our parents pushed many of us growing up and playing sports - we weren’t allowed to float through the comfort zone receiving coddling and bouquets of flowers for compliments. Many today have not been made to feel uncomfortable; they’ve not been pushed by their parents, and possibly not by earlier coaches. There is a softness that exists where toughness used to reside.  She also explains the need to follow your instincts and stick by the principles to be your guiding light.
