 #306 with Russ Van Cleave | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:59

This is my 13th podcast for Razorcake. Most people think 13 is a number of ill omen but I like it because it's the 7thprime number so that makes it sort of lucky. So, in honor of this occasion I picked 14 bands that have nothing to do with the number 13 and one that does. OK. For reals. There is no theme here. This is just another mish-mash of songs that have been floating around the homestead of late. Enjoy! -Russ Van Cleave To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer. In the subject put “Podcast.” Hope you enjoy listening. Tracklisting: Super Power Abuse, “Pacing" from V/A To Live And Die In TampaBay (ADD Records) --- The Figgs, “Miss Velvet" from Miss Velvet b/w Powder King (Matt Label) Gordon Gano's Army, “The Otherside" from Gordon Gano's Army (Art Of The Underground) The Mountain Goats, “Woke Up New" from Get Lonely (4AD) --- Trainwreck Riders, “World Got Round” from Trainwreck Riders / The Pine Hill Haints split 7” (Let's Pretend) Jason & The Scorchers, “White Lies” from Lost & Found (EMI) DS-13, “I'm A Cop” from Code-13 / DS-13 split 7” (Havoc) --- Pretty Boy Thorson & The Fallen Angels, “Don't Call Me Anymore” from An Uneasy Peace (Kiss Of Death) Devo, “Speed Racer” from Oh No! It's Devo(Warner Bros.) Barbara Mason, “Yes, I'm Ready” from Cooler Than Ice: Arctic Records And The Rise Of Philly Soul (Jamie/Guyden Records) --- Highway 66, “Lake Merrit Moonlight” from Radon / Highway 66 split 7” (Goldentone) David Dondero, “Samantha's Got A Bag Of Coal” from This Guitar (N/A) Sweet Baby, “Don't Do That” from V/A Down In Front (No Idea) --- Tenement, “ “Rock Eating People” from Napalm Dream (Mandible) Henry Thomas, “Bull Doze Blues” from Worried Texas Blues: Complete Recorded Works 1927-1929 (Yazoo) Super Power Abuse: It's been awhile since I've listened to this comp of Tampa area bands from about the mid 2000s and I'd forgotten how great this track was. Unfortunately, this song and the other song on the comp are the only songs this band officially released as far as I know. These two songs are two of only six songs that I'm aware of them recording. The other four are on a demo. The Figgs: Somehow I've gotten through all these podcasts without playing The Figgs. That doesn't seem right so I'm here with the Miss Velvet single to fix all that. I'm not aware of the existence of this song on anything other than this single – one of the frustrating things about being a Figgs fan is that so many of their great songs are squirreled away on hard-to-find EPs and singles like this one (“Hi-Fi Dropouts” or “Rejects” anyone?). I found this one in some used 7” bin years ago. Gordon Gano's Army: Ostensibly made up of an army belonging to the dude from Violent Femmes, these guys have been around for a little while. They've had a few songs on comps and the like but I think this is the only full-length they've released. The Mountain Goats: I don't know too much about The Mountain Goats except that it's pretty much just the one guy (John Darnielle) and that they have about a billion records. This is the only one I have though and I like it. Trainwreck Riders: I'd never heard of these guys until they showed up on a split

I'd like to believe I'm becoming a better person, but I don't think that's necessarily true. All that I can tell is that I'm becoming a different person. The future is very uncertain for me at this point. I honestly have no idea where I'll be in six months. So, why not blast some killer guitar rock and forget all about the crushing weight of responsibility? I know that's what I'm doing!  #304 with Juan Espinosa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:12

The other day I was thinking to myself about how I don't listen to music in my car all that much anymore. Typically I listen to sports radio: not so much because I fancy myself a sporto but more for the comedic value. It can be really funny hearing these sports analysts getting worked up over a game that ultimately means fuck-all. “Relax, it's just a game” I say to them as if they could even hear me. Unless the conversation turns to baseball; then I'm also chiming (read: yelling) in. Since I don't really buy CDs anymore (always insisting on a vinyl format) I decided to do something that I rarely, if ever do: use some of the download codes that came with my vinyl to transfer onto CD-Rs (yeah, I still use those.) Turns out the codes don't work. “Wanna listen to the new Libyans album in the car on the way to the bar?” Forget it, not gonna happen. “Wanna blast Ruleta Rusa to freak out the normies?” Denied! I suppose some music is best enjoyed in front of your stereo, earphones intact while admiring the album art and reading the lyrics. I guess what I'm trying to say is: suck it digital downloads! My vinyl copy sounds better anyway! -Juan Thirty Eight P.S. The first half of this podcast is all new tunes. The last five are some of my favorite covers. UPDATE: You know, I recorded this podcast in 2013. I fucked up a little and now it's super late. Let's pretend it's still December 2013, okay? Hey ho, Razorcakeateers! It's me, Bryan Static, here to bring you another round of delicious punk jams! And what better way to celebrate the end of a fantastic year of music than with a celebration of music from years past? This year is the 10th anniversary of my favorite band's first album: The Marked Men's self-titled debut. I've written about my love for the Marked Men before and, let me tell you, I'm nowhere close to shutting up about them yet. Join me, won't you? In my time machine, we'll take a journey back to 2003. As I travel through life I seem to rediscover the world around me which I mistakenly thought I understood. It's almost as if day by day, my mind seems less willing to accept the tangible reality which I inhabit, yearning more and more for a different sort of existence. As I push everything farther away, I find myself more and more alone within myself. I occasionally feel like my true self is nothing more than the inner voice which guides my physical body through grappling matches. It is clear and understands context, action/reaction, power, technique, the immeasurable spirit of the human soul trapped within flesh and bones. Most of these songs have to do with madness, perception, longing, and pain. This is my so-called life, personified by the sounds which have become my solace. –Rene Navarro To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Tomorrow, “Zine Week,” an entire week of zine-celebratory activity begins, all leading up to the first ever "3rd annual L.A.  #300 with Todd and Daryl | 1984...30 Years Later | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:33

Patterns and Delays Human nature seeks meaning patterns. 300 is a nice round number. It sounds official. Razorcake's done 300 podcasts. That's significant, like a road marker. The wheels have stayed on that long. Coast to coast. The numbers bear us out. The theme of this podcast is the year 1984. More numbers. 2014 is the 30th anniversary of 1984. 30 and 300. That's the tie-in. In 1984, I was twelve. I was also living in a rural Nevada town. I hadn't heard punk rock yet, but I'd read about it at the library and was anxious to hear it. I picked up my first punk record in 1985. I purchased it at The Underground in Las Vegas. It was JFA's Blatant Localism. The mid-to-late ‘80s was a rough time for punk rock bands and music. Its popularity was definitely on the wane. It was, however, a pretty great time for a young kid in the middle of nowhere to pick up what would end up as classic vinyl at reasonable prices. Then, as now, I think punk rock is more diverse than people give it credit. I also think that the podcasts that Daryland Idid prior to 300 stand toe-to-toe with the music on this one. Legacies and deeper exploration. Gems in the roiling seas of shit. Give those two podcasts we posted thirty years and get back to me in 2044. This podcast is dedicated to Chris Peigler. Miss you, buddy. -Todd To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer.  #299 with Candice and Matthew | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 67:13

(glitched cover by candice aka infinity-machine) Last night I cried while watching a documentary about Bronies. Sure, I was drunk, but it got me thinking about the importance of having a sanctuary. A place where you're safe to be vulnerable. For those of you not in the know, a brony is an adult male fan of the show My Little Pony. The documentary showed men from around the world gathering at a convention to celebrate their shared love of a children's show. I couldn't help but see parallels to Awesome Fest or things of that ilk. As someone who studies philosophy of science, reads the Silmarillion, and quotes Rancid lyrics with Shatnerian intensity I can relate to being passionate about things most people find embarrassing. Every Friday, Candice, Todd, and I get to work on things that we're passionate about. We work hard and goof around. Razorcake is a sanctuary. I think it's a sanctuary to a lot of you weirdoes taking the time to read this. It's a sanctuary because we believe what we do is important and worth the stress it takes to care about something that gets condescended to and written off. Music is what brought us together, but it's the personal ethics that keep us all here. At the end of the day I don't care what you're into as long as you're not an asshole. So, be kind to each other. Be kind to the Bronies. And be kind to me. Unless I'm being an asshole, then you can make fun of me. Yee-ha!  #298 with Todd Taylor | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:34

The past several months have been pretty unforgiving to Razorcake as a fanzine. A couple weeks ago, our local printer of the past thirteen years shuttered their doors. The place where we've dropped off our bulk mail also closed. We'll now have to go further down a busy freeway in a small truck that's so laden that the mud flap (singular) scrapes around corners. We'll adjust. I'm confident of that. It's just that the unknowns are stressful and intimidating. We now have to decipher different types of codes. (Like never drop off mail at the international station on a Friday unless you want to wait for two hours to get in the building. Don't make any boxes heavier than fifteen pounds if you can help it. Making statements to our printer, like “I want the blackest black ink you can give us,” and doing weird shit on our end to make sure it happens, although it makes little sense as a set of directions.) These are pragmatics, the backbone activities to a fanzine. They're pretty invisible. Below is music, the spirit of our fanzine. It's pretty invincible. In my book, at least. -Todd PS: What the fuck? In the last two months of 2013, I got my mitts on over ten amazing DIY punk albums. Since I started writing for fanzines fulltime in 1996, I've never heard so much awesome music released in such a short timeframe. We win. Do you appreciate that Razorcake reviews so much independent music? Razorcake is the first and only official non-profit DIY punk rock fanzine in America primarily dedicated to supporting independent music culture. Please help keep us rolling along and consider making a tax-deductible donation to us. If you are reading this before December 31st, 2013, check out our year-end incentives! The last couple of months have seen several packages reach my doorstep from all over the country. I haven't had any shortage of records to spin as well as having several others on deck for future listening at my convenience. This is a good problem to have as far as I'm concerned. Some of these bands were pleasant surprises (Diät, Varix, Generacion Suicida) as I came upon them through blind purchases and suggestions from friends. Some of these are sure to make my top 10 list for the year (Belgrado, Raspberry Bulbs, and the amazing Radioactivity LP.) All of them are records worth owning and have my personal stamp of approval. I promise that my enthusiasm and passion for sharing music through Razorcake will remain genuine as long as there are open ears out there in the digital world. It's been far too long since I've done one of these. The good part about the wait is that it was easy to find songs to play. That bad part is that I found way more songs than I could fit in a 45 minute show. I suppose that will make the next one that much easier when I can find the time to enjoy a few more Dale's Pale Ales. Like most all of my podcasts, this is just another free form excursion down the rabbit hole. -Russ To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Wright, "The Bottom Line" from The Bottom Line (Hi) Graham Parker, "Fool's Gold" from Heat Treatment --- Spoke, "Just A Thought" from Done (No Idea) The Steve Adamyk Band: This LP was a recent acquisition for me. After hearing from several people that this band was something I was going to enjoy, I have now verified those claims. Brian Eno: Way back in 1973, before Brian Eno was an avant-garde music and studio nerd legend, he was the latest ex-member of Roxy Music. The song here is the first cut from his critically acclaimed debut solo album. While it certainly picks up where he left things off with Roxy Music, the music on this record tends to be more experimental, but amazing just the same. Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves: I guess most people in this forum would be familiar with Chris Wollard, if not with his more recent work with the Ship Thieves, then from Hot Water Music, The Draft, The Cro(w)s, et. al. He and the Ship Thieves recently released their second full-length on No Idea. It's allegedly a pretty good spin, but since I don't have it yet, I'm playing this other really great song that was released on seven inch a couple years back. Anthrax: Yes. This is Anthrax covering the Sex Pistols. Yes. I played this on purpose. XTC: So I'm just now noticing that XTC would be the second song from a group of ‘70s pseudo-artsy Brit rockers I've played on this show. Don't worry. There's one more. While I can't pin down exactly what has brought about this trend, I will say that anything that motivates the dusting off of XTC LPs is a positive development, in my opinion. Wreckless Eric: Almost ‘70s pseudo-artsy Brit rock, but, perhaps, a little too rock'n'roll for the ar

This is the second in a trilogy of podcasts dedicated to creatures in our natural world. This one is focused on songs with birds in the track name. I enjoy watching birds out my bedroom window in the morning or when I go for a walk in the arboretum. And I had a sparrow eat out of my hand a few months back and that was pretty awesome. Generally, birds are pretty cool. Except for blue jays. While their color is very pretty, they're also the dicks of the bird world. They're mean, loud bullies, and deserve a punch in the beak. Fuck you, blue jays. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."
