I grew up in a small city in suburban/rural Indiana. I went to college in a small town of two thousand people in central Indiana. It wasn't until I was in my mid-twenties that I moved to a big city—Seattle. Sure, I had experience with visiting cities such as Chicagoand Indianapolis, but living in one was a different story. At first I was overwhelmed with the diversity and size. How would I ever find my way around? Could I navigate public transit? I soon created a routine and things didn't see so big. A few years later I moved to Boston and quickly figured things out. Almost ten years of living in big cities has helped me realize that I love the city. I love the life and vitality it brings as well as the myriad of diversity and opportunities. Sure, there's still a part of me that will always be a small town person, but walking in Chinatown or amongst skyscrapers I can't help but feel like, “Golly gee! How did this small town boy ever get here?” And I feel so lucky to have made it. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Interview Podcast with Baby J. (Stoned At Heart, Can Of Beans) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:42

LISTEN HERE: Baby J Interview MP3 It was 2000—somewhere around there. San Pedro was on fire musically. There were uncountable numbers of shows on 4th Street. They weren't venues. Punk houses. Sometimes the houses were the pre- and post- parties. Sometimes they were the whole shebang. I remember children being there. I remember a neighborhood kid with a knife, cackling, on a trampoline. I remember this girl—fourteen or fifteen—and she lived in the back of one of the houses. She played acoustic guitar, and it wasn't like, “How darling, a little girl's playing; I wonder if she travels by canoe and draws raccoons.” Fuck that safe, patronizing, quirky bullshit. She was really good. Fearless. Funny. She made the folks on the porch stomp and dance and shake their heads. Loss and celebrations were in the same wrapper. Talent's not something bestowed only on certain ages. She was at ease amongst the freaks and weirdos and dirthead artists and wastoids and the punk underground that rivuleted and squirmed down that street. Encouragement from a diverse set of outcast peers is like spores. It's uncomfortable to give and receive compliments. Still, the fungus spreads. It's just hard to see in real time, almost invisible. Several years passed. Ebbs and flows. The girl disappeared. I didn't know it at the time, but it was hard drugs and a broken window that made her scarce. More years. I saw her in a Pedro backyard, playing. Can Of Beans. Acoustic punk with backup. Small pills of overwhelming sadness, but the type of sadness that has sunshine when it dissolves into a form of unexpected medicine. Baby J sang songs of heartbreak. We talked a bit as the yard filled with BBQ smoke. She surprised me when I asked what she'd been up to. She'd joined the Air Force reserves and was working on a collaboration with Todd Congelliere, Jimmy Felix, and Chachi Ferrara (three quarters of a then-on-hiatus Toys That Kill) called Stoned At Heart. More years passed. Now, in 2015, she's twenty-eight, with a deep catalog. I knew her rough sketch, the bullet points. It was high time to catch up and have a long talk. -Todd Taylor Interview by Todd Taylor, Simon Sotelo, and Bianca Barragan Photos by Shanty Cheryl Songs: Stoned At Heart “9th Fret” and “I'm Not Using My Brain / Desperate” off of Party Tracks Vol. 1 (Recess / It's Alive) Party Tracks Vol.1 by Stoned At Heart LISTEN HERE: Baby J Interview MP3 To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Interview Podcast with Delay | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 71:29

LISTEN HERE: Delay Interview MP3 Playing in a band requires telepathy, a Jedi mind trick that bridges the fingertips and lips and impulses of different people all striving to craft a song. This intuition is none more strong than between twin brothers who grew up in a musical family, and a childhood friend whose laid-back family allowed their basement to become a practice space. You can hear the familial bond in Ryan and Austin's intertwined vocal harmonies. As young'uns, they sang in a high vocal register, almost falsetto, eventually growing into a breathy timbre. You can hear over sixteen years of camaraderie in Jesse's restrained, although pronounced, drumming, which accents the fuzzy guitar licks and warm bass lines. This is audible cohesion. Delay's musical catalog is a snapshot of lifelong friendship, a testament to perseverance in spite of societal pressure to conform. Fit in. Give up. Just a few years in the muck, it's obvious that soul-sucking careers can sap creative energy and transform you into a lifeless husk. Yet, this trio has committed to the one thing that makes them happiest: punk. Before you attempt to tap into their wavelength, strip away any saccharine preconceived notions associated with “heartfelt music.” Forget lovesick posturing. Mumbled confessions. Hackneyed metaphors. Instead, be prepared for honesty, for absolute clarity, and for musical therapy. Tuning into Delay's wavelength reveals some of the daily bullshit. You might not recognize this new lingering sensation as sincerity has a way of sneaking up on you, but when it does, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. -Sean Interview by Sean Arenas and Todd Taylor Photos by Jonathan Velazquez Songs: “Haze” and “Tender” from the LP Circle Change on Salinas Records Circle Change by Delay LISTEN HERE: Delay Interview MP3 To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." I'm pretty happy with the diversity of the music here. One thing I love about finding random themes (such as this one utilizing apostrophes in song titles) is that it often enables me to have a wide variety of music for the podcast. In this episode I've got some screamo, hardcore, indie rock, punk, riot grrrl, and so on. I realize not everyone is going to have the same exact tastes in music as I do, but I hope that there is at least a song or two you, the listener, will enjoy. I love introducing people to bands that are new to them, and hopefully that's happening. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." #380 with Juan Espinosa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:51

Welcome to my latest Razorcake Podcast. I've been getting a lot more feedback than usual about my podcasts lately and it makes me giggle like a schoolgirl. I honestly thought that no one bothered to listen to these things and that the only people into them were Todd and I. I've also been interacting with more Razorcake family members via social media which has instilled in me even more faith in the old Razorcake motto “Yr Not Alone.” These happen to be folks I've never met but would undoubtedly like if I ever do get the chance (the first round is on me, by the way). I'm no social butterfly but I do enjoy making new friends—even more so when we happen to share so many mutual interests. Here's another batch of raging tunes from some of the very best bands in the DIY scene. Also know this: the day I stop doing these podcasts is the day I get hit by a bus or when Todd gets tired of seeing my stupid face. Bianca, Rhea, and Todd join forces once more, despite stifling daytime heat and numerous social obligations, to play some jams, and also dish about Rhea's London-Amsterdam-Berlin tour with her band Sister Mantos, zine robots, and actual lip gloss for sale in the 99-Cent Store that comes in disgusting flavors like pickle. At some point, it is revealed that Bianca's “vacations” are really just her reading travel books and Google-street-viewing foreign places, which isn't as sad as it sounds (at least she's dreaming!). Interview Podcast with Peach Kelli Pop | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:36

Listen Here: Peach Kelli Pop Interview MP3 Peach Kelli Pop is the brainchild of Allie Hanlon. She writes all the music and, until recently, has played all the instruments and recorded it all herself. If that's not the embodiment of DIY, I don't know what is. Peach Kelli Pop also ascribes to the punk yardstick of optimal song length: shorter is better. They play attractive, catchy music. It's evocative of cotton candy sunsets and candy heart necklaces of songs; not hurting puppies and kicking out toilets. What's wrong with songs being “huggable” and pretty once in a while? We've all got busy, fractured lives. Knees like getting jerked. Thinking's hard. Some people get off poking digital eyes. The internet's rife with it. Yet, I get a trolly, crude aftertaste with a filmy residue of misogyny from self-proclaimed “punk gatekeepers” who dismiss Peach Kelli Pop as merely empty calorie, high fructose, confectioner's sugar music looking for a commercial to stick to. Peach Kelli Pop's music is a continuation of the legacy of largely overlooked and dismissed histories of women in punk. It fits nicely in the constellation that swirls and winks with The Rezillos, The Pinkz, Top Ten, The Go-Go's, The Brat, Alleycats, Holly Golightly, God Damn Doo Wop Band, Bombón, and Alicja Trout (especially Mouse Rocket and Alicja Pop). What great company. I'm happy to confirm my suspicions with this one-on-one interview. Allie is an intelligent, talented, involved, practical musician who hates cops, refuses to capitalize the “g” in “god,” and knows how to get shit done. Interview Podcast with Bob Suren | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:19

LISTEN HERE: Bob Suren Interview MP3 Bob Suren has worn many hats within the punk scene over the years: zine editor, musician, and running his own record store and mailorder, Sound Idea. I thought it would be a good idea to sit Bob down in front of the mic at the Razorcake bunker when he was in town doing appearances at various record stores in the Southland for his book Crate Digger: An Obsession with Punk Records. Despite the title of the book—which is not specifically about records—it is more about life and the experiences he had around the time he acquired any particular piece of vinyl, from complete involvement to re-evaluating everything when faced with loss. What follows is an interview, as well as him reading from the book. Give it a listen, and make sure to go see him when he rolls through your town. –Matt Average LISTEN HERE: Bob Suren Interview MP3 To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Travel the world. Jump in puddles. Buy yourself flowers. Or stay home, pretend you're in a cold place, and listen to this podcast. The world is a really cool place sometimes, and this podcast is inspired by some of my favorite places in Europe that I've been or places where some of my friends are from. I'm sure just about everyone has some mix tape or mix CD or mix playlist (or whatever else gets passed around these days) that they've received from someone at some point that opened them up to whole new collections of bands and artists that might have otherwise been relegated to obscurity. This podcast is dedicated to one of those collections; a mix tape a friend gave me circa 1994 that opened me up to a world that I've since shared with The Replacements, Naked Raygun, The Jam, and a bunch of other great music. I suppose it's safe to say that the best days of the "mix tape" are behind us. I know there are quite a few collectors and distributors out there who remain stalwart disciples of the cassette format. But I don't expect we'll see the cassette format regain its former glory as the preferred mode of music sharing amongst the general population. That being said, I suppose that this installation of my regular podcast could be considered nostalgic. This go around, I decided to pay tribute to a great mix tape my friend Bean made for me circa 1994. I came to college in 1992 eager for new music. I had a background in ‘80s metal and, towards the end of high school and the beginning of college, was starting to familiarize myself with a lot the easily accessible "punk" and "alternative" bands of the day. As I started to involve myself more in college radio, I eventually met Jeff Douglas, colloquially known amongst friends as "Bean." Bean asked me what I listened to and, after a moment of reflection following the short list of bands I recited, said, "I'm gonna make you a tape." What I got from him a few days later ended up being one of the most memorable collections of music anyone has shared with me. At this point, I believe I have accumulated a CD or record containing every song on that tape save the one exception detailed below. There are some bands I have left off in the interest of keeping the runtime for the podcast from getting out of control. But, while I still have a few brain cells left upstairs, I decided that it would be a good idea to document what I recall of that mix tape as part of a Razorcake podcast. Goodbye for now Los Angeles. My partner Sabrina is starting her Masters program in social work. Do we get credit for the hard work and good deeds of those we love? If so, can I take credit for Todd Taylor's tireless work, kindness, compassion, willingness to evolve, and ability to meld unbending ethics and ideologies with an ever-growing sense of what it means to contribute meaningfully to a revolutionary existence? Can I write in a manner that confuses readers? Will our podcast follow suit? So I am leaving Los Angeles. Everything was chaotic when we did this podcast, for instance I had already packed half, or more, of my LPs. So the theme is goodbye L.A.; this is all I got left for you and it's filled with LOVE. I play songs that Todd remembers from his youth, and my super youth, and we reminisce and wonder. Introduction: The Crust Punk podcast is covered with flour. It looks and smells like the kitchen I want to work in. There is no hierarchy and lacks organization but has an energy that denies impediments and works to recognize and shed its white/cis/male privilege. But I still sometimes talk over people. Sorry, Todd. I am trying. There is a lot of music from the ‘80s. –Noah To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."
