Even though I grew up with punk rock, the background music in my house was always rap and hip hop, thanks to my older siblings. When I was younger, I hated rap just on principle – how could I like something that my brother and sister like?! That's just wrong. As I got older and got a clue, however, I started appreciating the hip hop scene more, especially when I realized that there were actually more similarities between punk rock and hip hop than we seem to realize. Both subcultures are rooted in a fundamental DIY ethos. You got something to say? Say it. You have a statement to make? Make it. You didn't need fancy equipment or a major label to get heard in the beginnings of rap – all you needed was passion. Early hip hop was also extremely socially conscious and political, tackling the same issues that punk loves to tackle – police brutality, corrupt governments, social events, gender issues, and a detestation for the corporate sellout. This week's podcast is a collection of rap and hip hop tracks, both recent and classic, that deal with subject matters that are directly relatable to punk rock. –Rishbha Bhagi To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." My column in Razorcake issue #73 is all about the Japanese band The Blue Hearts. Not to give away the ending, but I'm seriously lobbying for someone (besides me) to bootleg the first two Blue Hearts albums. Until that happens, I figured I'd share a few Blue Hearts songs and weave them in with a recording of me reading the column. The songs are listed in order; all of them are by The Blue Hearts. For all my talk of “Linda Linda” in the column, I did not play it in this podcast, in part because I've played it in two other podcasts. You can access one (which is all about my favorite Japanese punk) here. The other one (which is my favorite punk songs to play on the ukulele) is here. –Sean Carswell To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #258 with Chadwick and Astara of the Secret Society Of The Sonic Six | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 62:08

I first met the Secret Society Of The Sonic Six around 2003 or 2004. They were doing something that was not common at the time around Los Angeles. Their sound was, and is, synth-driven music that recalls the likes of early Chris & Cosey, Ike Yard, and early Cabaret Voltaire, without ever really sounding like those bands. They describe themselves as “nite music” and I feel that's an apt description. The music is dark and textured, with lyrical content that is more on the noir end of the spectrum—people down on their luck, so deep they can't see that all is lost despite any fight or defiance put up. Secret Society is the sort of music you listen to driving around the desolate parts of your town late late at night, with your windows down and the summer heat hanging heavy. Like any band that I truly like, I have always been intrigued by what they listen to. So here you go. This is definitely off the beaten path, and hopefully you will enjoy it. For me, this is the kind of thing I'm always hoping to find. Punk kicked down the doors for me, and I have been looking behind every door ever since discovering new sounds to shape and mutate the world I live in. Chadwick and Astara came by the Razorcake HQ with a box of vinyl and these are the results. –Matt Average To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." I will now forever associate the last two songs on Low Culture's Screens with the recent passing of a good friend. These songs could have been written about him, these songs should have been written about him. And in the end, I just wish he had heard these songs. Enter Bob Mould like an older member of the family who can actually offer some good, condoling words, "And now our hearts our beating, and all our sadness has been washed away", "Always keep believing, have to keep believing." These records sat on my floor for a week while I tried to see the point in organizing them into a podcast. And honestly, I only convinced myself to do it because I wanted to get them off the floor, but after a couple hours of handling them and listening to them all; I'm really glad I did. -Daryl To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." “Everyone smells like piss just a little bit/ And everyone's been ripped up/ And everyone everywhere is definitely dying.” Those are the last words sung on this podcast, courtesy of Will Thomas, the lead singer of the Careeners (formerly Grabass Charlestons). I don't intend it to be a downer. I mean it to be conformational. Accept the worst. Calibrate expectations accordingly. The punk that I love—under-the-radar, not-very-sellable-to-preteens DIY punk—is mostly human. It's fractured, querulous, imperfect, fuck-uppable, fucked-up. Full of bad ideas and poor execution. Weird. It's also noble. And good listening. Not for keeners. Yeah, I'm a sillyheart. I still believe in community over competition. I have no fucking idea if any or all of these bands/band members believe in any of that. But I do know when I listen to these songs, I feel like they're protecting me with armor against the bad shit that rises up like a black tide over and over and over again. -Todd Taylor To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Most of us have been in love at some point in our lives. (If you haven't, you should really try it out!) I currently have a great girlfriend and originally wanted to compile a podcast of love songs but realized that would be too sappy. Instead I searched for songs with “love” in the title and came up with this podcast. Most of these songs have no romantic sentiment tied to them (although who can deny Motörhead's tender affection with their power ballad “Love Me Like a Reptile”), so please note that I take no responsibility should you play this podcast while having an intimate candlelight dinner with your special someone. If anyone actually does that, though, please let me know. –Kurt, welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview Podcast with Wreck Of The Zephyr | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 95:48

When we interviewed Wreck Of The Zephyr at Razorcake HQ, Eric and Dave had to leave about thirty to thirty-five minutes into it. They'd warned us. Working in film and television, they have gnarly schedules. We'd planned the interview weeks in advance and they'd given us a window. We knew that going in. I'm not going to lie: I'm a writer, not a “journalist.” I have no qualms with rearranging an interview for clarity, for precision, and for continuity. This is a band playing music, not war coverage, not the inner workings of Wall Street. We have latitude. The print version of this interview which ran in Razorcake #70 (http://www.razorcake.org/store/razorcake-70) doesn't reflect that Eric and Dave left and it was just Daryl, Noah, and I gabbing away for a good half hour after they split. I just thought it'd read weird; like “What the hell happened to the other two guys? Why haven't they said anything for the past four pages?” So we rearranged the print interview to lock their story in tight, to balance out the voices. Mind you, we didn't put anything into anyone's mouths. We didn't fabricate anything. We just crafted the interview so it told a cohesive story. The story in their own words. That's the important thing. Well, I know next to shit about audio editing, so what you get in this audio interview is in real time with maybe a cut or two to say goodbye to Eric and Dave. Below is the original print intro, so if you have no idea who this great band is, it'll give you some bearings. Enjoy, -Todd -- This sounds hokey. A trio of friends who enjoy one another's company move from Boston to Los Angeles. Two go into television and film. The third becomes a cook and opens a DIY venue in Northeast L.A. for exactly one day less than a year. The three play music because they can't stop. Arty music pretensions fade. Folksiness is amplified; stomping resumes. A homosexual yeti movie gets made. On-set intestines are perfected, made vegetarian, get pecked at by pigeons. Domestic dogs develop a taste for human flesh. ZZZzzzrrrrt. What? Wreck Of The Zephyr is a great example of organic, practical accidentalism. They're a triangular peg of a righteous-yet-humble band, not quite fitting into the round holes of pre-existing punk scenes. Punks label them as “alternative” and have encouraged them to play with Christian bands. Indie folks shy away from their volume and speed. That suits me just fine because it's often hard to shake the feeling that round-hole, DIY punk can be a beer-soaked failure. That it can be a folly, a reenactment. That it's often childish and petty and the dialogues don't progress; they just endlessly cycle like turbulent waters without forward motion. I need to hear and see bands like Wreck Of The Zephyr that reshape possibilities. Bands of friendly folks that have no interest in fitting in. Bands that create their own language. Bands with a drummer who pulls out his shoulder air drumming in the van to his old band's songs. Wreck Of The Zephyr's first LP, For Helen, is available as a personally handmade hardbound volume: vinyl, fully illustrated 12”x12” book, and handwritten download code. The time and effort that went into making it is ridiculous. It's priced below cost. It's money-stupid, brilliant, awesome, and quixotic. Wreck Of The Zephyr's an affirmation. They leave me with the hard-to-shake feeling that punk can still save those who invest themselves in it, even if soun

For this podcast, the goal post is set up for the final two songs. I actually laughed when I paired them together: Kelli Peach Pop and No Statik is pretty much like rolling a scoop of ice cream into society's ashes and licking away. And I like them both, for wildly different reasons. No reason to be all “subdivisions of the mind / scene cop” about it. My argument is the thirteen songs which precede them set up part of the grey area between the two. Your conclusions may vary. Depends how uptight you are. Let's all get fat off this current buffet of great music being played and released by DIY punks. Get out the sweatpants, stretch the elastic of your ears, dig in, and get down. -Todd Taylor PS: A note about the photo. The reason for the napkin?  Intentionally Bad Capitalists 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 66:29

Beneath the dual guitar harmonies and deliciously sappy lyrics, Summer Vacation is a band that faces the challenges of independent punk head on. Whether it's setting up shows, working on zines, or releasing records, they really seem to understand that punk can be more than just plugging in a guitar and locating the distortion knob. A perfect example of getting out of punk what you put into it. Wanna play shows with bands you admire?: set them up. Want an outlet for your thoughts?: make a zine. Wanna be included on an amazing comp?: release it yourself. Simple ideas that have plagued uninspired punks for decades now. When we were approached about helping release their debut LP, we couldn't have said yes faster. It's the perfect addition to the Razorcake Records catalog; challenging, heartfelt, and ridiculously melodic. Because of the release, it just doesn't feel right to run an interview in the magazine, so why not just record a focused conversation and post it on the site? Well, here it is. Todd and I sat down with Sean and Mark and discussed some of the less obvious aspects of being a legit punk band in 2013. This is what happens when three bassists and a drummer form a band. –Daryl To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." This past year, 2012, was fantastic for new music. So many of my favorite bands released new albums and I also found a few new bands to latch on to as well. That being said, this podcast contains some of my favorite songs from some of my favorite albums of this past year. There was so much more music I could have included, but I think this is a good start. If you hear something you like, I would highly encourage you to check out any of the full-length albums from which these songs are taken. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." Man, sometimes I really feel sorry for bands that achieve commercial success. To really have to care in all the wrong ways. To me punk isn't all "I don't give a fuck!" But it definitely is a large part of it. Especially when it comes to what other people think. And in some way to have to give that up would be gut-wrenching. Below is a group of tracks that, for the most part, don't seem to give a fuck what you think. This tracklisting originally started out as non-stop scorchers, but that's not what I listen to all the time, so I threw in some other tracks. This podcast is dedicated to trading records. Much love to all the labels and bands. –Daryl To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer. To play the file without downloading (it depends on your computer's configuration for playing music files), just click it. Your media player should recognize what to do with an mp3. (If it doesn't, you're on your own.)
