 #357 with Bianca and Rhea | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 69:42

This episode marks the momentous occasion of L.A. Zine Fest organizer Rhea's first podcast! We talk about music to listen to when you're working and we share some strategies for finding new music. We also discuss homemade Halloween costumes and April Fools' Day. We do not talk about how much we all miss former LAZF organizer Simon, who has decamped to Portland, Oregon, but the longing is palpable, even over the airwaves. –Bianca To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview with Martin Wong of Save the Music in Chinatown | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 70:34

LISTEN HERE: Martin Wong / Save the Music in Chinatown Interview MP3 Born from necessity, maintained by enjoyment. When punk works, it works in levels. Multi-leveled tiers of participation and abstract, often unnoticed stipends. If you thought the stock market was convoluted, just think about the “dividends” one receives from their involvement in DIY punk. All the benefits are fringe benefits. When Martin Wong started organizing the Save the Music in Chinatown show series he did it on all the right levels: a love for his family, a love for education, a love for music, and a love for fun punk shows. When a good excuse is a good cause, you know you're on the right track, and that's why he's still at it. It's also why so many people from so many different backgrounds have rallied behind the cause and helped be part of the project. This may be one of the best interviews I've been a part of because, at a certain point, I realized that just letting Martin talk was so much more interesting than any of the questions I had prepared. He was coming from decades of involvement and still dedicated to the ideas that made him excited as a teenager. Punk with a purpose is having realistic expectations and the enthusiasm to actually make it happen. See some mind-blowing bands, raise a couple bucks for the kids, eat some delicious cookies, and get home at a reasonable hour. Levels. –Daryl This podcast also features live tracks from Mike Watt And The Secondmen and The Adolescents, recorded at Save the Music in Chinatown #5 on 01/11/15.  #356 with Samantha Beerhouse | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 69:17

Hello all! I hope you enjoyed my previous foray into podcasting. To be honest, I wasn't sure I had enough new punk music to share (or at least, bands that have not already been featured by friends also on the Razorcake podcast wagon)—gotta keep that shit fresh. Unless there's an audience for old gospel and calypso records? I still don't have a jean vest but maybe if I make a bunch of patches for obscure Trinidadian musicians, I'd finally be cool. Not impressed?  Interview with Aztlan Underground | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 167:09

LISTEN HERE: Aztlan Underground Interview MP3 It only takes seconds into an Aztlan Underground tune for listener to know they've come across a group unafraid of working outside the usual comfort zones. They take the spirit of open defiance bred in the barrios of East Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, draw fuel from the 1980s hardcore punk and hip hop scenes, and infuse spiritual inspiration from the continent's native cultures and religions. What results voices the frustrations of peoples marginalized and dehumanized in lands to which they have been physically and spiritually connected for more than 20,000 years. AUG drew from a diverse musical palette over the course of their three albums, each building on its predecessor while pushing in a new direction—from straight hip hop augmented by native instrumentation, to an electrified fusion of punk and rap, to soaring soundscapes that alternate between poetic beauty and a withering brutality reminiscent of early Swans. For their efforts, they're considered one of the linchpin bands of the ‘90s “Chicano Groove” scene; have garnered several honors, including four Native American Music Awards nominations in 2010 for their self-titled third album; taken active roles in their communities, both as artists and residents; staged nearly two decades of annual Farce of July concerts featuring like-minded artists, poets, and performers from the worlds of punk, hip hop, rock, and beyond; performed on at least three continents; were personally invited to open for the Southern California stop of Steve Ignorant's “Last Supper” tour; and had one of their songs listed among the ethnic studies materials identified as objectionable and effectively “banned” by the Tucson Unified School District, alongside other dangerous and subversive materials as Drown by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Díaz and Shakespeare's The Tempest. And that's only scratching the surface. I once referred to them as “the real dope” in a review and I stand by that assessment. After two-decades-plus of existence, they remain challenging, subversive, and uncompromising. More importantly, they walk the walk—something increasingly rare today, even in the underground. While the punters slice, dice, and sub-sub-categorize parts of the underground into irrelevancy, lifers like AUG continue to push beyond terms like “hip hop,” “rock,” and “punk” and offer glimpses of the possibilities that lay beyond for those willing to commit their lives to their art and working toward a better world for all oppressed peoples. –Jimmy Alvarado To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  LA Zine Fest 2015 Panel - New School, Old School | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 66:00

LISTEN HERE: LAZF 2015 “Old School, New School” Panel Discussion As part of LA Zine Fest 2015, I was asked by Daisy Noemi to host a panel. It was named “Old School, New School” and billed as a “friendly, lively panel discussion between longtime and newer zinesters. They'll share stories of veteran experience and newer zinester enthusiasm, look at the changing landscape of zine culture, and talk about the current challenges and celebrations of making paper zines.” This podcast is that audio file. It was a great, fluid conversation and a wonderful day. Thanks to the four rad zinesters who participated, to the nice lady who let me plug into the board to capture the audio, to Jenn Witte of Feminist Library On Wheels for getting me in contact with Suzy Mae, and to Jen Hitchcock of Book Show for introducing me to Sabrina Dropkick.  Interview with Chris Pepus – Against Class Bigotry Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:37

Higher education is supposed to be about bettering ourselves. If the pursuit of knowledge is so noble, why shouldn't everyone be afforded that opportunity, regardless of class status? This egalitarian concept is completely at odds with how the universities in our country are actually run. Working class applicants are continually discriminated against at elite collages, while the rich legacy students with poor academics are welcomed under the guise of “tradition.” Last month, Chris resigned from his position as a film archivist at Washington University in St. Louis, a school with abysmal economic diversity. We discuss its impact, the New York Times' classist condescension towards him, and ways we can challenge class warfare in higher education.  Los Angeles Zine Fest Interview | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 84:41

LISTEN HERE: LA Zine Fest Interview MP3 Read this interview in issue #84, available here: http://www.razorcake.org/store/razorcake-84 Los Angeles currently scares me a in a way I never thought it would. For instance, the last several years have seen the rise of a lot of local breweries. I can't say I'm a fan of a single one. Record stores are popping up everywhere, yet my faith only lies in a handful. “Indie” culture is on the rise, but it feels so superficial—more for cash than autonomy. That's why an event like L.A. Zine Fest is so refreshing and real! L.A. Zine Fest is a much-needed, much-appreciated convergence of independent projects and people, for Los Angeles residents and visitors. It's a community-driven, not-for-profit experience that showcases the overlooked and under-appreciated: the zinesters, the independent publishers, the freaks, and the weirdos. It astonishes me how many people I've met and maintained a relationship with—our mutual roots all go back to this annual event. Putting Razorcake together can feel like a solitary act. A lotta basement time. And the people we do interact with are typically other people involved—or soon to be involved—with the zine. Being able to spend six hours behind a table, talking to people about what we do is an undeniable rush. There's nothing else like it the entire year for us. It runs the gamut of responses from the ecstatic to the indifferent, from the supportive to the, well… unsupportive. It's all there! And I love every minute of it. If someone tells me they don't like Razorcake, I totally understand. It's not for everyone. That's by design. But if you tell me you don't like L.A. Zine Fest, then I'm speechless, because L.A. Zine Fest truly is for everyone. Acceptance is unavoidable. Much respect to all the organizers—past and present—who've put so much hard work into such an inspiring project. –Daryl To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #347 with Kurt Morris | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:57

Years go by and I keep getting older (as is often the case). At some point I turned that corner of being annoyed at hearing older people say, “It's amazing how fast time flies,” to finding myself saying, “It's amazing how fast time flies.” The days lead into months that lead into years and before you know it you're into a career and thinking, “So this is what it's like to be an adult.” Despite the march of time, the music endures. Sure, some tastes change, but I still listen to a lot of the same music I was into fifteen years ago. I'm also finding new music. It's all good. As the years go by, I still enjoy punk. It saved my life and continues to renew a fire inside of me every time I listen to something that sounds out a chorus of dissatisfaction with the world. Here is the last of my trilogy related to the calendar. The theme for this episode is songs with the word “year” or “years” in the song title.  #346 with Tim Brooks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:42

Sometimes familiarity can be comforting. My house is filled with records, driving my family nuts as they take up shelf space across the house. I don't always need something “new.” If the feeling is there, then I am as happy to hear a band banging out three chords in Finland 2014 as I am hearing a band banging out three chords in 1964. This pod has songs from now and then, here and there. Some of these tracks are well known and others that may have slipped under the radar. Music is like art, it's what you like.  Twelve Hour Turn Top Shelf Interview Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 74:07

LISTEN HERE: Twelve Hour Turn Top Shelf Interview MP3 If there was ever a record that I feel like I played on but am not in the band, it's Victory of Flight.I met the Diem brothers in the early summer of '97, they were wide eyed and so full of enthusiasm it was contagious. Seeing their band, Twelve Hour Turn play a few times that summer, I was sold. Awesome! After another year or so, a few singles and a solid split LP with I Hate Myself, Twelve Hour Turn was ready to put to tape what turned out to be Victory of Flight. They had asked me where to record and I suggested Steve (Heritage) in Tampa, as I had just had a great experience with him. At some point I remember committing to go down there with them to the studio, but I ended up on tour, and they ended up having a tough, tough time; as you will hear. Part of me always loves adversity—it somehow adds to the finished product. It's kind of interesting to always have something to gripe about; it definitely made for a great interview. I hope you enjoy this. It is by far one of my all-time favorite records…victory of myself…indeed! –Matt Sweeting LISTEN HERE: Twelve Hour Turn Top Shelf Interview MP3

 #344 with Bryan Static | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:58

Here it is, 2015. We survived. Who knows for how long? As per usual, this year was filled with terrible politics, horrendous atrocities to mankind, and awesome music. This year, not like usual, I actually had to do some digging to find the best music of the year. I was not on the ball this year. I don't know what changed exactly, but finding new and exciting artists was not as easy this year as it was for me in the past. Probably it has a little to do with my schedule, a little to do with my depression, and a lot to do with my financial situation. But, never fear! I scrimped and scavenged and found seventeen of the best tracks of rocking punk music! And I didn't even use all of the good records that came out this year! 2014, here's what I have to say to you. You were a harsh, unforgiving year. A year that started out filled with hope and excitement for the future until you brutally crushed it out of me. But for that you made me stronger, kind of like a character in an RPG. So, thanks for helping me level up, I guess. Here's hoping you all got a chance to level up this year as well.  Feminist Library On Wheels Podcast Interview with Jenn Witte | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:03

Listen here: F.L.O.W. PODCAST INTERVIEW MP3 Allow me to get hyperbolic here. I think the Feminist Library on Wheels (F.L.O.W.) might be the best thing that's ever happened to women's rights in Los Angeles. This little mobile library gives our community a chance to enjoy the freedom of new worlds and perspectives through feminist literature and the joy of riding a bike. A successful crowd funding campaign allowed F.L.O.W. to build a cheerful yellow book trike that can be found across Los Angeles at different literary and cycling events, ready to promote feminism with a wide array of multimedia. Although not a cyclist myself, I'd been eager to talk to my former roommate and co-founder Jenn about the response to F.L.O.W., crowdfunding through social media, feminism, and the logistics and challenges of navigating a new community project. We also let Todd talk a little bit, too. You can get your library card, donate books, and learn more here: (www.feministlibraryonwheels.com). –Candice Listen here: F.L.O.W. No getting around it. Shit's atomized, diffused. Even in DIY punk. Large media is “smarter” in the fact that they can take any meaningful word or phrase and turn it into an overnight marketing campaign. They just shove some money into their machine and crank up the sky computer that shoots pictures and words into millions of millions of screens. You: bummed. Them: trying to get richer. Culture: poorer. Fortunately for me, punk's not one thing that can be ripped off by a tourist. It's a system, a way of thinking. It's interconnected and interwoven. A webbing. Checks and balances. My favorite bands, with rare exception, were and are outliers. When I say shit like “The Minutemen/ Big Boys/ Hüsker Dü of today,” I totally mean it.
