Decided to change it up this time around, screw the jibber jabber. Fourteen tracks with only one obligatory break. But enough about podcasts, I'd like to use this space to say congrats to two friends who have recently embarked into the scary world of being a small business owners while maintaining their DIY ehtics. Andrew and his studio Golden Beat Recording Studio and Kasper with his spankin' new skate shop in Alhambra, Underground Skate Supply. Keep them in mind when looking for either someone to record your band, or a place to pick up some new skate equipment. I'm proud of the both of ya.  Interview Podcast with Emily Rose Epstein | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:49

Listen here: Emily Rose Epstein Interview MP3 Emily Rose Epstein is an amazing musician, artist, and writer. We met when she was nineteen and she volunteered for Razorcake. She's been busy. She's worked at Thrasher and Alternative Tentacles, DJ'd at KUSF (RIP), and joined—and now is on hiatus from—the Ty Segall Band and Mikal Cronin. (There's a lot of overlap and band member entanglement between the two.) She currently works down the street from Razorcake HQ at Permanent Records, helps with her dad's jazz club, and is in two bands (currently without names): a hardcore band and an old country band. Her approach to music is deep, varied, nuanced, and exciting to watch. She's respectful of what's come before, but she uses it as a catalyst and an extensive palate to make intrepid, engaging music. We talk about the Gun Club, Motörhead, The Cramps, and Battalion Of Stains, how not to act when cops pull the vehicle over, but what to say if they ask if you worship satan. Good times. Songs: “I Bought My Eyes” and “Diddy Wah” (a Bo Diddley cover), both off of Slaughterhouse (In The Red) To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Hello Shitty People Top Shelf Interview Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:03

Listen Here: Hello Shitty People Top Shelf Interview MP3 I want to believe that every town has one of these bands. They are the best band around, nobody outside of their tight circle knows about them, all it takes is somebody putting the music in front of your ears, and you will want to hear everything they ever wrote. When this album (finally) came out, it was hard explaining them to people who never saw them perform. How do you explain a ten-year-old inside joke via a music website? Here's Mike Collins on Gainesville, Florida's Hello Shitty People: One of the best bands around town, in the year 2000. In issue #86, I interviewed four people in punk who are also transgender to find out how the two experiences inform each other. Kale Edmiston, Shannon Thompson, Mars Dixon, and Sadie Smith make and put out some great music. So, in addition to reading about it, here's a playlist for you to enjoy. Included are bands they are/were in, music they've put out on their independent labels, and a couple of recommendations. –Susan To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." When I finished my last trilogy of podcasts (ones related to the calendar), I thought, “That's it. I won't be able to come up with another set of three podcasts that are related.” Then I noticed a song with a comma in it, thought I'd find other songs with commas in the title, and make a podcast of those. But I wondered, “Are there songs that have other forms of punctuation in them?” Lo and behold, I discovered I have a number of tunes with exclamation points and question marks in them. Thus, a new trilogy of podcasts was created by a grammar nerd. Fun fact: I have a copyediting certificate, so this really shouldn't be unexpected. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview Podcast with Alice Bag, Author of Pipe Bomb for the Soul | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 63:32

LISTEN HERE: Alice Bag Interview MP3 Punk pioneer, Alice Bag's second book is called Pipe Bomb for the Soul. It picks up where her first book, Violence Girl, left off, after the dissolution of the Bags. Alice makes bold decision to fly down to Nicaragua, a country in the throes of a revolution, in the hopes of becoming a better teacher. Pipe Bomb for the Soul's source text is Alice's journal from 1986. It is fortified with her reflections on what happened, how it changed her, and what she learned. Topics include beauty standards, Paulo Freire's concept of “banking” education, the FSLN, ethnicity, class, Comandante Gladys Baez, and personalizing your own revolution. This is an hour-long conversation with Alice with Razorcake co-founder, Todd Taylor. http://www.alicebag.com/ Pipe Bomb for the Soul is also available in blog form here.  #364 with Shereen Lisa Dudar | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 60:10

I am a girl and I have no musical talent whatsoever. The majority of this playlist is comprised of female and female identified individuals who are amazing at music. Some of these songs talk about gender inequality and being a badass chick, and other songs are just fun and make me want to dance, which I am also terrible at doing. As per usual with these podcasts, there was talking thrown in, which I was fortunate enough to have done with Todd. He refused to say “slut,” which is a word that appears semi-frequently in my tracklisting. Bad words are only bad if you say so, and I don't say so. –Shereen Lisa Dudar To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview with Angie Skull | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:53

LISTEN HERE: Angie Skull Interview MP3 Angie “Skull” Garcia has been an active participant in the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley punk scene as scenester and musician for more than thirty years. Over the years she has played bass for Moslem Birth, Peace Corpse, Insulin Reaction, Knucklebone, Punkoustica and, most recently, as part of the musical unit that accompanies Alice Bag on her book tours. She is also a visual artist of note, including a collection of “Dollbot” creations, each unique both in design and backstory. Although not a household name even within the local scene—it's no secret that the rhythm section provides a band's heartbeat and propulsion, but the lion's share of the attention goes to the singer and guitarist(s)—Garcia is not only one of many woefully overlooked contributors to impact her local scene through her work, she is also one of very few women and eastside “O.G.” punks to remain consistently active from the scene's early days. Bookended between some fine tuneage, courtesy of Insulin Reaction's "Machine" and Peace Corpse's "Jocko Macho," Todd and Jimmy chat with Angie about her involvement in the scene, her transition from fan to musician, parallels between punk and working as a mail carrier, and what has kept her involved through the years. –Jimmy Alvarado To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #363 with Keith Rosson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 76:46

So here's what happened: I traveled to L.A. on a trip and came up with a playlist on my little MP3 thing, and then I went to Razorcake HQ and Todd and I shot the shit about various stuff like doing reviews, and bands, and how it's kind of weird to draw stuff when you're almost blind and shit, and in between that we hit shuffle on that MP3 thingy and played whatever came up. And we drank a beer each. And then we went to a show and watched some bands play in a garage. And then I went to Covina, but that's another story. –Keith Rosson To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #362 with Kurt Morris | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:55

I've lived in Boston since 2008. I moved here for grad school having never visited, but quickly grew to love it. I didn't know if I would stay after I finished school, but it's been almost five years since graduating and I'm still here, so it has certainly endeared itself to me. There's a lot of history and culture, as well as smart, innovative, progressive people. I love that there is public transit, green space, a good airport, and an awesome public library (just to name a few random things). I love that there's always stuff to do—since I've arrived I don't think I've ever said “I'm bored.” I've found some songs from Boston-area bands in my collection and put them together for what I believe gives a pretty good range of the past and present Boston sound. I know I'm missing a ton, but these are just some of my favorites. –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #361 with Russ Van Cleave | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:12

Hey folks. Thanks for checking in again for this, my 17th Razorcake podcast featuring another mix of old and new. Most of the songs here are just tunes that have either recently entered (or re-entered) my life that I've been keeping mental tabs on for just this occasion. As you're looking down the playlist and deciding whether you want to be bothered with clogging up your internet for 54 minutes and 13 seconds with this noise, please keep in mind that The Sandals song is not a Black Flag cover and the Sir Douglas Quintet did not play Renaissance Festivals. Judging from the picture that I requested though, it does seem quite possible that Johnny C is holding auditions for a Gary Puckett And The Union Gap tribute band. Stay tuned and I'll keep you all posted on this fascinating development. -Russ To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." This song is actually a cover of a Magnetic Fields song. I know little to nothing about the Magnetic Fields but I love this version of their song. Strikeforce Diablo: This Gainesville band only put together a few releases to my knowledge - a couple splits, an EP and this fine piece of wax. This had been patiently waiting on my shelves to be rediscovered a few months back. The Bananas: I first heard The Bananas when a friend of mine discovered the Plan-It-X mail order catalog back during the death rattle of the last century. He ordered Forbidden Fruit sight unseen because it was a $5 full-length CD. It didn't suck. In fact, it was really good! Now, there are four Bananas full-lengths. This jam is from their most recent, 2008's New Animals. The Sandals: You might be familiar with The Sandals from Bruce Brown's classic surf movie, Endless Summer. It's one of my favorite movies and when I found the soundtrack on LP a few years ago, I decided to take

Karp Top Shelf Interview Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 67:59

Listen Here: Karp Top Shelf Interview MP3 This record really stands the test of time. Jared has been making killer records since Karp disbanded. Karp's Self-titledLP is just as crushing and groovy as his later work in Big Business and currently The Melvins. Here, he goes into detail about writing and recording this record, good times in Gainesville, and the demise of Karp. Thanks to Natalie who let us barge in on her scheduled time in the GROW studio to get this one done. K Records did get back to us after the interview was conducted. To the best of their knowledge, they made 1,000 LPs one time, all black. Technical note: This was recorded on two microphones. We shared one, Jared had the other. Somehow Jared's mic didn't record. His audio came through as a faint ghost through our mic. This was an editing nightmare. I won't bore you with the tech details, but keep your volume knob close while you are listening. –Replay Dave Listen Here: Karp Top Shelf Interview MP3 To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."
