Learn Greek with GreekPod101! Don't forget to stop by GreekPod101.com for more great Greek Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- "The Travelling Players" "The Travelling Players" (1975) is a dramatic movie of Th. Aggelopoulos. For many people, it is the best movie in the history of Greek cinema, while it also belongs to the thousand best movies worldwide. The film follows the tour of a group of traveling players from 1939 to 1952 while they try to present the play "Gkolfo, the Shepherdess." The actors of the group are also members of the same family, with different characters. On the one hand, they depict a miniature of the Greek society of those times—every person has different political beliefs, and on the other hand, they remind us of the royal family of the Atreides in Ancient Greece. The movie operates in three layers that mix between them—first of all, the spectator watches the group that goes around Greece, then the relationships of its members, and finally the political events as well as the participation of the actors in them. However, he doesn't follow a chronological order; the director decides to divide it into pieces that he reconnects in a new way. Thus, he offers to the spectator a segmental image of the story. As every creation of Aggelopoulos is characterized by his unique directing style, so is this one. Despite its long duration (four hours), both the dialogues and the different shots are few. With the exception of the scenes where the group performs, there is almost one word heard every twenty minutes, whereas the shots succeed one another barely only every three minutes. Besides, his preference to leave the image to express the reality and to give the spectator the chance to choose the most powerful points in the shot instead of continuously showing new ones to him is known. Undoubtedly, it is a complex film that has revealing political events [...]

----Formal English---- Monemvasia Monemvasia, which is situated at the southeast of the Peloponnese, consists of one of the most popular destinations of the Lakonias prefecture. Basically, it is just a rock in the sea that is connected to the shore by a narrow strip of land. In addition, its location is betrayed by its name. Monemvasia is a composite word that derives from "one" and "entrance" and it means that "there is only one entrance." It is a castle built during the Byzantine times, and it is divided into two settlements, the upper and lower town. As one can understand, the first one is built on the level that exists on the peak of the rock, whereas the second is located at the southeast part of its base, so as not to be visible from the coast. The two settlements, enclosed within defensive walls, communicate between them only through a staircase sculpted into the rock. In the upper town, only Saint Sofia's church has been preserved; the lower town, however, has conserved its historical character. The stone buildings rise at the sides of the narrow streets where only people can pass. In the maze-like alleys, one can find many Byzantine churches that mingle with the traditional buildings, most of which function as hostels. The town's atmosphere transfers you to other eras with knights, pirates, and Greek fire. Of course, civilization is not that far away, since the new city starts right outside the walls. In a few words, Monemvasia is characterized by picturesque passages between the stone buildings, which lead to the peak and a bewitching view of the bay. --------------------------- Learn Greek with GreekPod101!
