Αν και είναι γνωστά και ως Επτάνησα, επτά είναι μόνο τα κυριότερα από αυτά που το απαρτίζουν· από Βορρά προς Νότο είναι η Κέρκυρα, οι Παξοί, η Κεφαλονιά, η Ιθάκη, η Ζάκυνθος, η Λευκάδα και τα Κύθηρα. Με ιστορία που πιθανολογείται πως ξεκινά το 1200 πΧ, τα Επτάνησα δεν βρέθηκαν υπό Οθωμανική κατοχή, αλλά υπό Ενετική και αργότερα Αγγλική, γεγονός που καθόρισε σε μεγάλο βαθμό την εξέλιξη και διαφοροποίηση του πολιτισμού τους, ακόμα και μετά την ένωσή τους με την Ελλάδα το 1864. Τα νησιά του Ιονίου εμφανίζουν λοιπόν διαφορετικά χαρακτηριστικά, ιδιαίτερα σε σχέση με αυτά του Αιγαίου. Πλούσια σε φύτευση, με τις ελιές και τα κυπαρίσσια να κυριαρχούν, περιβάλλονται από υπέροχες γαλάζιες θάλασσες και μεγάλες αμμουδιές. Ανάμεσα στις δεντρόφυτες εκτάσεις, πολλά χωριά και μικρές πόλεις συνθέτουν το τοπίο· σπίτια με στέγες από κεραμίδια, ξύλινα παραθυρόφυλλα, καμάρες και τοίχους σε διάφορους χρωματισμούς αποτελούν έκφραση της παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής, δημιουργώντας γοητευτικούς οικισμούς, με ατμόσφαιρα που θυμίζει ιταλική επαρχία. Σημαντικό μέρος της ξεχωριστής τους κουλτούρας κατέχουν οι τέχνες, και ιδιαίτερα η μουσική. Ένδειξη ότι αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της ζωής των κατοίκων είναι οι πολυάριθμες μουσικές μπάντες που υπάρχουν στα νησιά, ο τραγουδιστός τόνος των τοπικών διαλέκτων, καθώς και οι παραδοσιακές «καντάδες», τραγούδια που αφιέρωναν οι νέοι στις κοπέλες που αγαπούσαν, κάτω από τα παράθυρά τους. Οι Επτανήσιοι θεωρούνται από την υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα ως άνθρωποι που στην καθημερινότητά τους λειτουργούν με μια ιδιαίτερη τρέλα και που λατρεύουν το κουτσομπολιό. Και τα δύο αυτά στοιχεία είναι αποτέλεσμα του τρόπου ζωής της καθημερινότητας, και αν και έχουν κάποια βάση οι απόψεις αυτές, δεν παύουν να αποτελούν υπερβολές. Με λίγα λόγια, τα Ιόνια νησιά είναι ένας μοναδικός συνδυασμός της Ελληνικής και Ιταλικής κουλτούρας που με τη πάροδο των χρόνων απέκτησαν την δική τους μοναδική ταυτότητα. ----Formal English---- Ionian Islands The Ionian islands, as their name indicates, is a group of islands all along western Greece. Even though they are also known as Eptanisa ("the seven islands"), the seven are just the most important among them. From North to South there are Corfu, Paxi, Kefalonia, Ithaki, Zakynthos, Lefkada, and Kythira. With a history that is speculated to have started in 1200 BC, the Eptanisa weren’t under Ottoman occupancy, but rather under Venetian and later British control. This fact determined on a large scale the evolution and distinction of their civilization, even after their unification with Greece in 1864. The Ionian islands show different characteristics, especially in relation to the Aegean ones. Rich in vegetation dominated by olive and cypress trees, they are surrounded by outstanding blue seas and big, sandy beaches. Among the areas planted with trees, many villages and small towns compose the landscape; houses with tile roofs, wooden shutters, arcades, and walls of different colors make up the expression of traditional architecture, creating charming settlements of an atmosphere that reminds us of an Italian province. An important part of their culture is the arts and especially music. Some indications that they constitute an integral part of the residents’ life is the musical bands that exist in the islands, the cantabile tone of the local dialects, as well as the traditional "kantades," songs that young boys dedicate to the girls they love by singing them underneath their windows. Μάλιστα, το σενάριο έχει βασιστεί στο θεατρικό έργο του τελευταίου «Η Στέλλα με τα κόκκινα γάντια», ενώ πηγή έμπνευσης ήταν και ο μύθος της Κάρμεν. Όπως δείχνει και ο τίτλος του έργου, η ιστορία αφορά τη ζωή μιας γυναίκας με το όνομα Στέλλα. Η Στέλλα είναι λαϊκή τραγουδίστρια και έχει δεσμό με τον γιο πλούσιας οικογένειας, τον Αλέκο. Βλέποντας όμως πως η σχέση τους αρχίζει να φθείρεται, θα είναι αυτή που θα του ζητήσει να χωρίσουν· λίγο αργότερα ο Αλέκος θα σκοτωθεί σε ατύχημα. Όντας γυναίκα γοητευτική και ξελογιάστρα, έχει πολλές κατακτήσεις, ανάμεσα στις οποίες είναι και ο Μίλτος, ένας ποδοσφαιριστής. Αρχικά θα τον αγνοήσει, αργότερα όμως η αγάπη της προς αυτόν θα νικήσει και θα αρχίσει μια σχέση, απαιτώντας να βασιστεί στους δικούς της όρους - αυτούς της ανεξαρτησίας, της ελευθερίας, και σε καμία περίπτωση της καταπίεσης και συνεπώς του γάμου. Ο Μίλτος όμως δεν θα έχει την ίδια άποψη, και η σύγκρουση των δύο χαρακτήρων θα οδηγήσει στον τραγικό θάνατο της Στέλλας. Η ηρωίδα αντιπροσωπεύει ένα πρότυπο γυναίκας εντελώς αντίθετο και προκλητικό σε σχέση με αυτό της δεκαετίας του '50 στην Ελλάδα και προβάλλει πως και το αδύναμο φύλο μπορεί να είναι ανεξάρτητο. Μέσα από τη Στέλλα, η Ελληνίδα αποκτά και αυτή δικαίωμα στο να είναι ελεύθερη και να ζει με πάθος τον έρωτα, αντί να περιμένει τον πλούσιο γαμπρό που θα της εξασφαλίσει μια άνετη οικονομικά και κοινωνικά ζωή. Ελεύθερο πνεύμα λοιπόν η Στέλλα αρνήθηκε το γάμο και αυτό την οδήγησε σε θάνατο. Στη σκηνή της ταινίας που ο Μίλτος τη μαχαιρώνει, ακούγεται μια από τις πιο γνωστές φράσεις του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου - «Στέλλα, κρατάω μαχαίρι». ----Formal English---- Stella In 1955, the film "Stella," by director Michael Kakogiannis and scriptwriter Jacob Kabanellis, was presented in the movie theaters. The script is based on the last one's theatrical play "Stella with the Red Gloves," whose source of inspiration was also the story of Carmen. As the title of the film shows, the story is about the life of a woman named Stella. Stella is a pop singer and has a relationship with the son of a rich family, Alekos. Seeing though that their affair has begun to wear, it is she who will ask him to separate; a little while later, Alekos will be killed in an accident. Being an attractive and seductive woman, she has a lot of conquests, among which is also Miltos, a football player. Initially, she will ignore him; later on, though, her love toward him will win and she will start a relationship, demanding it to be based on her own conditions—these of independence, freedom, and in no way of oppression and therefore marriage. Miltos does not have the same opinion, and the conflict of the two characters will lead to the tragic death of Stella. The heroine represents a female model completely opposite and provocative in relation to the one of the 1950s in Greece and shows that the weaker sex can be independent as well. Through Stella, the Greek woman also acquires the right to be free and to live and love passionately, instead of waiting for the rich groom who will ensure a financially and socially convenient life. Being therefore a free spirit, Stella refused marriage, and that led to her death.
