Αυτό άλλωστε αποδεικνύει και ο μεγάλος αριθμός βραβείων που έχει λάβει για αυτές. Μετά το τέλος των κινηματογραφικών σπουδών του, δουλεύει ως βοηθός σκηνοθέτη σε πλήθος παραγωγών, που κατά βάση είχαν εμπορικό χαρακτήρα. Δρώντας σε μια περίοδο μεταβατική για την έβδομη τέχνη στην Ελλάδα, ανήκει στην καινοτόμο γενιά και συγκεκριμένα αποτελεί έναν από τους ιδρυτές του Νέου Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου (ΝΕΚ). Ο ΝΕΚ εμφανίζεται παράλληλα με τις μεγάλες στιγμές του Παλιού (ΠΕΚ) και εκφράζει την ανάγκη για ανανέωση, με νέα θέματα, αισθητική και πρόσωπα. Η τεχνική όμως που χαρακτηρίζει τον Βούλγαρη είναι ξεχωριστή και μοναδική· αν και επιδιώκει την πρωτοπορία και την υψηλή ποιότητα στα έργα του, διαλέγει θέματα για το ευρύ κοινό. Έτσι προσπαθεί να κρατήσει ισορροπία ανάμεσα στις γνωστές πρακτικές και τις ακραίες αναζητήσεις. Δημιουργώντας ταινίες σε εποχή πολιτικών εντάσεων, δεν μπορεί παρά να επηρεαστεί από αυτές, χωρίς όμως να τις μετατρέπει σε σενάρια. Επικεντρώνεται περισσότερο στα συναισθήματα του λαού- τον πόνο και το δράμα. Οι δύο μικρού μήκους ταινίες που γύρισε στην αρχή της καριέρας του έλαβαν θετικά σχόλια και θεωρούνται το σημείο εκκίνησης του ΝΕΚ. «Το προξενιό της Άννας» όμως, η πρώτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία, προκάλεσε τη μεγαλύτερη αίσθηση και τον καθιέρωσε στον κόσμο του κινηματογράφου. Στη συνέχεια ακολουθούν πολλές, ακόμα πιο σημαντικές επιτυχίες, με τις δύο πιο πρόσφατες να είναι οι «Νύφες» και «Ψυχή βαθιά». Στόχος του κάθε φορά είναι η δημιουργία ποιοτικών ταινιών που θα συγκινήσουν συναισθηματικά το κοινό, σε μια προσπάθεια να συνδυάσει το παλιό με το νέο. ----Formal English---- Pantelis Voulgaris Pantelis Voulgaris, born in 1940 in Athens, is a scriptwriter and director of some of the most important movies of the Greek cinema. At least, that is what the large number of awards he received proves. After the end of his cinematographic studies, he worked as an assistant director in several productions that were basically of commercial character. Being active in a transitional period for the seventh art in Greece, he belonged to the avant-garde generation, and in particular, he was of one of the founders of New Greek Cinema (NGC). NGC appears in parallel to the great moments of the Old (OGC) and expresses the necessity for renewal with new themes, styles, and persons. However, the technique that characterizes Voulgaris is special and unique; even though he aims at vanguard and high quality in his works, he chooses subjects for a larger audience. Thus, he tries to keep the balance between known practices and extreme quests. By creating movies in times of political tension, he can do nothing else but be influenced, however, he avoids transforming these influences into scripts. He focuses more on the people's feelings, pain and drama. The two short-length movies that he filmed at the beginning of his career received exceptionally positive comments and are considered as the starting point of NGC. "The Match-Making of Anna," however, his first long-length movie, provoked the biggest sensation and established him in the world of cinema. Thereafter, many even more important successes follow, with the two most recent "Brides" and "Soul Deep." Πρόκειται για μια φανταστική αφήγηση της ιστορίας της δολοφονίας του Έλληνα πολιτικού Γρηγόριου Λαμπράκη το 1963, σε σκηνοθεσία και παραγωγή του Κώστα Γαβρά. Η υπόθεση, αν και διαδραματίζεται στην Αλγερία και έχει ως πρωταγωνιστή έναν επιστήμονα με το όνομα «Ζήτα», περιέχει πολλά στοιχεία που σχετίζονται με την αληθινή ιστορία και την Ελληνική πραγματικότητα. Άλλωστε ο Γαβράς τόνισε πως οποιαδήποτε ομοιότητα με πρόσωπα και καταστάσεις δεν είναι καθόλου τυχαία· αντιθέτως θα έλεγε κανείς πως την επιδιώκει. Σε συνδυασμό με τη χρήση αυθεντικών στοιχείων από την έρευνα, η ταινία πέρα από αστυνομικού μυστηρίου αποκτά και χαρακτήρα ντοκιμαντέρ. Ο Ζήτα έχει προγραμματίσει να κάνει μια ομιλία κατά της ατομικής βόμβας, αλλά πριν μπει στην αίθουσα του επιτίθεται μια ομάδα ακροδεξιών που συνδέεται με την κυβέρνηση. Αν και η αστυνομία στέκεται δίπλα δεν την εμποδίζει, με αποτέλεσμα τον σοβαρό τραυματισμό του Ζήτα. Καταφέρνει μεν να ολοκληρώσει την ομιλία, αργότερα όμως τα τραύματα αυτά θα τον οδηγήσουν στο θάνατο. Μην πιστεύοντας την επίσημη εκδοχή πως ήταν ατύχημα, μια ομάδα ανθρώπων ξεκινάει την έρευνα για την αναζήτηση της αλήθειας. Στη δίκη που ακολουθεί αποκαλύπτεται μια κυβερνητική συνομωσία, αλλά όλα αλλάζουν όταν η πολιτική κατάσταση της χώρας ανατρέπεται από δικτατορία. Το «Ζ» γυρίστηκε το 1969 με πρωταγωνιστές τους Υβ Μοντάν, Ζαν Λουί Τρεντινιάν και Ειρήνη Παππά, και κέρδισε Όσκαρ καλύτερης ξενόγλωσσης ταινίας αλλά και βραβεία σκηνοθεσίας και σεναρίου. Η πλοκή διαδραματίζεται έντονα και η μουσική του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη τη συνοδεύει με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Είναι μια ταινία γεμάτη διαχρονικά μηνύματα, και η επανέκδοσή της σαράντα χρόνια αργότερα το αποδεικνύει χωρίς αμφιβολία. ----Formal English---- "Z" - Kostas Gavras The movie "Z" is a political thriller based on the book by the author Vasilis Vasilikos. It is about an imaginary narration of the story of the assassination of the Greek politician Grigorios Lamprakis in 1963, under the direction and production of Kostas Gavras. The story, even though it takes place in Algeria, contains many elements that relate to the Greek reality and the true story of the protagonist, a scientist named "Zita." Besides, Gavras pointed out that any similarity to persons and situations is not at all coincidental; on the contrary, one would say that he aimed at doing so. In combination with the use of authentic elements from the investigation, the movie goes beyond a police mystery to acquire a documentary character. Zita is scheduled to give a speech against the atomic bomb, but before he enters the hall, he is attacked by a right-wing extremist group related to the government. Although the police stand nearby, they don't block the attack, resulting in Zita's serious injury. He manages to complete the speech; later on however, these injuries will lead him to death. Not believing the official interpretation that it was an accident, a group of people begins an investigation searching for the truth. At the trial that follows, a governmental conspiracy is revealed, but everything changes when the political situation gets turned over by the dictatorship. "Z" was filmed in 1969 with leading actors Yves Montand, Jean Louis Trintignant, and Irene Papas and won the best foreign movie Oscar as well as awards for direction and scenery. The plot comes about intensely, and the music of Miki Theodorakis escorts it in the best possible way.
