Learn Greek with GreekPod101! Don't forget to stop by GreekPod101.com for more great Greek Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- "Cloudy Girl" "Oh little cloud, my cloudy girl..." Dionysis Savopoulos sings in one of the first songs he wrote. Incurably romantic, reactive, and different than the usual—from the way he dresses to the way he performs, he raised a whole generation with his songs. The "Cloudy Girl" is a love song that he composed when fifteen. One summer night, he saw at the cinema the movie "Jules et Jim" of Francois Truffaut, and he identified himself in the unaccomplished love of the film. At the teenage parties that he attended, "the girls always preferred a basketball player to me; I was sitting and playing music records...," Savopoulos says. And thus he composed one of the few romantic songs that was released on his first record entitled "Truck" in 1966. Afterward, many more albums followed that knew great success not only in Greece but also abroad. Many of his songs were adapted, translated, and performed by important artists from abroad. Dionysis Savopoulos is considered as a teller of stories set to melody with various content, mostly political. Living in an era of intense political changes, when young and old were interested in those, he couldn't do anything else but record them in his own special way. His songs rudely invade our organized world and try to change it through his music and lyrics. Savvopoulos is a song creator, as they characterize him, who combined in a unique way Greek, Valcanian, and Western sounds. Growing up, Nionios, diminutive for Dionysis, compromised and adapted, but his creations continue to be special and traveling. --------------------------- Learn Greek with GreekPod101! Learn Greek with GreekPod101! Don't forget to stop by GreekPod101.com for more great Greek Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- "The Spring Gathering" "The Spring Gathering," a movie directed by Dimos Avdeliodis in 1999, is a tribute to Greek nature and the different image it presents each season. Through events of simple, everyday rural life, it shows the character and tradition of Greeks. The story unfolds in a small village of Chios during the '60s, where the position of the field guard is empty after the sudden death of the last one. Even though the residents have repeatedly asked for a substitute, nobody seems willing to go; rumors that the previous one died on duty and his haunting spirit scare them away. However, when the salary increases, four candidates appear, one for each season of the year. The film follows their succession at the position of the field guard to the sounds of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." With moments of time when children come back from school and family meals, it describes a miserable life in the village and shows the different characters—the passions and weaknesses not only of the guards, but also of the rest of the residents. Among the guards' passions there is a girl, Elisso, that all four of them will chase but nobody will catch as she slips away into the fields. More than anything else though, the nature of Chios dominates the movie; the mastic trees, poppies, olive trees, beaches, and alleys do not just compose the setting, but they become the stars. For each season of the year they play another role—sometimes sweet and fragrant, other times harsh and bitter. No matter what, they compose a work that received many awards and even more applause. --------------------------- Learn Greek with GreekPod101!
