Αυτό άλλωστε αποδεικνύει και ο μεγάλος αριθμός βραβείων που έχει λάβει για αυτές. Μετά το τέλος των κινηματογραφικών σπουδών του, δουλεύει ως βοηθός σκηνοθέτη σε πλήθος παραγωγών, που κατά βάση είχαν εμπορικό χαρακτήρα. Δρώντας σε μια περίοδο μεταβατική για την έβδομη τέχνη στην Ελλάδα, ανήκει στην καινοτόμο γενιά και συγκεκριμένα αποτελεί έναν από τους ιδρυτές του Νέου Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου (ΝΕΚ). Ο ΝΕΚ εμφανίζεται παράλληλα με τις μεγάλες στιγμές του Παλιού (ΠΕΚ) και εκφράζει την ανάγκη για ανανέωση, με νέα θέματα, αισθητική και πρόσωπα. Η τεχνική όμως που χαρακτηρίζει τον Βούλγαρη είναι ξεχωριστή και μοναδική· αν και επιδιώκει την πρωτοπορία και την υψηλή ποιότητα στα έργα του, διαλέγει θέματα για το ευρύ κοινό. Έτσι προσπαθεί να κρατήσει ισορροπία ανάμεσα στις γνωστές πρακτικές και τις ακραίες αναζητήσεις. Δημιουργώντας ταινίες σε εποχή πολιτικών εντάσεων, δεν μπορεί παρά να επηρεαστεί από αυτές, χωρίς όμως να τις μετατρέπει σε σενάρια. Επικεντρώνεται περισσότερο στα συναισθήματα του λαού- τον πόνο και το δράμα. Οι δύο μικρού μήκους ταινίες που γύρισε στην αρχή της καριέρας του έλαβαν θετικά σχόλια και θεωρούνται το σημείο εκκίνησης του ΝΕΚ. «Το προξενιό της Άννας» όμως, η πρώτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία, προκάλεσε τη μεγαλύτερη αίσθηση και τον καθιέρωσε στον κόσμο του κινηματογράφου. Στη συνέχεια ακολουθούν πολλές, ακόμα πιο σημαντικές επιτυχίες, με τις δύο πιο πρόσφατες να είναι οι «Νύφες» και «Ψυχή βαθιά». Στόχος του κάθε φορά είναι η δημιουργία ποιοτικών ταινιών που θα συγκινήσουν συναισθηματικά το κοινό, σε μια προσπάθεια να συνδυάσει το παλιό με το νέο. ----Formal English---- Pantelis Voulgaris Pantelis Voulgaris, born in 1940 in Athens, is a scriptwriter and director of some of the most important movies of the Greek cinema. At least, that is what the large number of awards he received proves. After the end of his cinematographic studies, he worked as an assistant director in several productions that were basically of commercial character. Being active in a transitional period for the seventh art in Greece, he belonged to the avant-garde generation, and in particular, he was of one of the founders of New Greek Cinema (NGC). NGC appears in parallel to the great moments of the Old (OGC) and expresses the necessity for renewal with new themes, styles, and persons. However, the technique that characterizes Voulgaris is special and unique; even though he aims at vanguard and high quality in his works, he chooses subjects for a larger audience. Thus, he tries to keep the balance between known practices and extreme quests. By creating movies in times of political tension, he can do nothing else but be influenced, however, he avoids transforming these influences into scripts. He focuses more on the people's feelings, pain and drama. The two short-length movies that he filmed at the beginning of his career received exceptionally positive comments and are considered as the starting point of NGC. "The Match-Making of Anna," however, his first long-length movie, provoked the biggest sensation and established him in the world of cinema. Thereafter, many even more important successes follow, with the two most recent "Brides" and "Soul Deep."
