LOUSY STORY = NO MONEY Cold hard truth: The lousy horrible dirty rotten money story that runs in the back of your mind every day, all day, is the reason you’re not able to break through your inner glass ceiling when it comes to making money. I see it every day: coaches who work hard to build their businesses, attract paying clients, doing “all the things” they believe are necessary to make money as a coach. What they don’t realize is that their emotional DNA is programmed to keep them from making money. Even if you’ve made money in the past in a prior job, it’s a whole different ball game when you go into business for yourself – a whole other set of thought patterns come into play. This is exactly what happened to me. Back in my days in radio and television, I made a lot of money. I was given a car and had a clothing allowance that was over the top. I never had to ask for any of this – it’s what I was deemed to be “worth” as a television news anchor and journalist. Fast forward to running my own business and suddenly there were “issues” when it came to selling, money, and putting myself out there. This is why I believe becoming your own boss has so much to teach us about who we are as women… how we see ourselves and our place in the world, and oftentimes the way we see ourselves is based on a lousy story. So, it doesn’t matter how successful you may have been before as an employee working for someone else, it’s a whole new ballgame when it comes to working for YOU and asking to be paid what you believe your services are worth. Let’s Play In The Dirt. Let’s Make A Mess! Remember when you were a kid and your parents would yell at you to “CLEAN UP THAT MESS”? Am I the only would who would argue, “That’s not a mess!” For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed rolling around in my so-called messes, but for the longest time I used to hide that side of me. I wouldn’t let them see the mess until I had made it all look “perfect.” To be truthful, that would sometimes turn me into a hot mess. Here’s the difference: there’s a CREATIVE mess – the kind where your juices are flowing and you’re having the time of your life. And then there’s a HOT mess – the kind where you’re out of juice and want to curl up into a ball and hide. Making a creative mess is akin to playing in the dirt when you were a kid. Being a hot mess is akin to bawling on the bathroom floor. See the difference? One lights a fire under your butt, the other burns your ass. It takes guts to make a mess. Especially when “everyone” is watching. We want to avoid embarrassment at all costs. And that’s the mistake… avoiding embarrassment at all costs. Because there is undoubtedly a cost: we don’t show up for the things we want most in life. And when it comes to building a coaching business, when we don’t show up we don’t make money. But even worse than that? We let ourselves down. It takes guts to do things that are uncertain, and entrepreneurship comes with no guarantees, that much is certain. Are you a gutsy woman? I suspect you are, even if you’re not sure you are. There must be a drive within you that is propelling you towards entrepreneurship and I suspect it has a lot to do with your desire to be of service as well as to experience more freedom in your life by becoming your own boss. If just hearing the words marketing funnel makes you break out in hives, all the more reason to pay attention (or close up shop, which would be so sad… so pay attention). Introducing the “Absolute Bare-Bones Basic Business Plan.” If you have no other plan for your business, Coach, you need this one… It’s the very least that a “Responsible Business Owner” would do if she wanted to build a real business, defined as one that makes you money AND makes you happy.  Before you start listening to this episode of the podcast, grab a pen and paper and a calculator. This is going to be eye-opening if you’ve never taken the time to calculate exactly what you have to do, i.e., “sell” in order to hit that target number you’ve got floating around in the back of your mind. You need to get that number out of your head and onto a piece of paper so we can figure out exactly how you’re going to hit that number. Don’t worry, we’re not going to do anything complicated, it’s all simple math.  You didn’t really think you could go into business and not do some math, did you? By the way, you’re not alone. Dealing with “the numbers” is one of the most intimidating aspects of running an online business… or any business. But that doesn’t mean you get to stick your head in the sand and ignore the numbers altogether. Today we’re going to create a “bare-bones basic business plan” designed to help you track the numbers that determine whether you will hit your revenue target for the year. This is simple stuff, really, and it will help you keep the blinders off when it comes to how your business is doing on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. I want you to have a very clear picture of what you need to DO to hit your “money number” in the next year.  Know your numbers so that they don’t come back and bite you in the “assets” one day. I encourage you to use your revenue numbers as data that informs you about whether you’re on the right track when it comes to the products and services you offer. Without knowing these numbers you’ll be flying by the seat of your pants, so don’t be too surprised if, a year from now, you’re not much further ahead than you are today if you didn’t track your progress along the way.  This is one of the most important items on my 46 Step Checklist — the one that lists everything you need to do to get your business up and running online, including the legal stuff, because, hey, I’m an Internet business lawyer as well as a coach and I want to make sure your “assets” are covered! In order to grow, you’ve got to let go. Easier said than done, right? If you’re a life coach who’s just starting out, or you’ve been at it for a while but don’t seem to be getting any traction, you may need to learn the art of delegating. You cannot be a good boss if you’re stuck being an overwhelmed employee. If you’re spending a lot of your time creating images for your blog posts, posting on social media, or doing housework… you’re probably not spending enough time doing the kinds of things that generate income. Delegating (and liking it) requires a mindset shift that’s hard to do if you’re focused on keeping control, believing no one can do anything as “perfectly” as you can. But the pursuit of perfection is likely resulting in your leaving money on the table. Why Delegating Is So Important As hard as you may try, you simply cannot do it all, so why not settle for doing the things that make you the most money? Start small and, most of all, be patient. Remind yourself that things don’t have to be perfect, they just have to get done!  In this episode of Gutsy Glorious Radio we talk about delegating just about everything… from taking care of your body, to cleaning your house, to taking care of business.
