Someone’s gotta say it so it may as well be me: “FEAR, you’re FIRED. Take your unwelcome puny ass on a hike because you have no idea how to run a business!” Take that, you lousy, no good stinkin’ rotten cheatin’ stealin’ lyin’… Wait a minute, Lin, hold on. Rein it back. (No!) Have you noticed? Fear makes for a lousy business woman. It makes bad decisions. It makes a lot of mistakes. It makes poor judgment calls. It has no idea what it means to build a thriving business that lights you UP. On top of it all, Fear is very selfish. It’s main goal is to keep you in your place. Worst of all, Fear pretends to keep you “safe” inside your comfort zone.  Someone’s gotta say it: FEAR needs to be FIRED. Here’s the thing about Fear – it sucks the fun, enjoyment, excitement, and pride out of having your own business. Instead, if it has its way, it instills self doubt in your abilities, and worry that anything you do will not be “approved” by “Them.” You’ll look foolish in front of Them, says Fear. You’ll look like an idiot in Their eyes, insists Fear. You’ll embarrass yourself and They will laugh, cries Fear. Fear doesn’t care if it makes you feel, play, or be small. As long as it keeps you comfortable, Fear believes it’s doing a good job of taking care of you. Fear couldn’t care less if it zaps all the Joy out of you. The only way to put Fear in its place? Like I said, fire it! Or at the very least, put it in the back seat and tighten up the seat belt. Fear needs to be given a gag order. Fear needs to be kicked in the ass. Fear needs to be subordinated it to its rightful place – behind YOU. WHAT SHOULD YOU CHARGE FOR COACHING? Should you “raise your prices”? I just celebrated a birthday and my husband got me something that made me think about this very question. Now, I’m not one of those coaches who will tell you to RAISE YOUR PRICES to prove your own value or sense of self worth. That’s crazy logic/reasoning. That’s not how pricing works. Does Walmart have low prices because Sam Walton didn’t think he was worth much? Yeah, see? This is about knowing your ideal customer.  It has nothing to do with your self esteem UNLESS you don’t think you should be charging anything for your coaching because you’re not sure of the value you provide. As usual, money talk raises all sorts of questions and emotions. The bottom line, however is this: Sell to your audience! To do that, you have to know your audience. Who are you ideal clients? How do they buy? What are they looking for? WHY YOU NEED AN F.U. MINDSET Newsflash: Your inner 6-year-old (we’ll call her Shirley) is mad at you. Don’t believe me? Then just watch all the times it feels like you’re sabotaging yourself. That’s actually not you messing things up; it’s her! Self sabotage seems to make no sense. You tell yourself, “This time, I’m going to stick to my guns,” but then you throw everything out the window. Don’t charge for your services.” To which she retorted, “Well that doesn’t make sense.” See what I mean? On the one hand we say, “It’s not about the money,” but then we say we absolutely want to make money. Some of you have even said you want to make “lots of money” (without feeling bad about that). So why do we say it’s not about the money? Because it’s not. Not really. Not when it comes to creating “real wealth” – the kind every coach I meet wants to create.
