 Episode-00991- Ned Farrell from Happiary.com on Beekeeping | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:51

Ned and His Wife Sharyn in Bee Keeping Mode Ned Farrell has been a beekeeper for the last 24 years.  Part of his beekeeping experience was in Paraguay, South America, teaching farmers how to keep honeybees with the local African (killer) bees. Ned uses and teaches people how to keep bees with both the modern Langstroth hives common in the U.S., along with what he considers “more appropriate technology”, top bar hives common in other parts of the world. Ned like many beekeepers feels the honeybee in the United States is in trouble. tis is due to a combination of factors like the overuse of pesticides, attacks by predatory mites, and Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).  Due to these occurances honeybee numbers in the U.S. are dwindling at an alarming rate. Ned wants people to understand that only honeybees can pollinate our flowers and crops to the extent we need. Honey, with all of its nuances and health benefits, can be produced only by bees. Our vast scientific knowledge cannot manufacture hive products in the laboratory. Without the honeybee to take care of pollination and to create the hive products, we are in trouble. He joins us today to discuss how we can help the bees reestablish the populations many of us remember from the not so distant past.  How to get started bee keeping and why top bar hives really are all they are cracked up to be.  We also discuss how you can keep bees just about anywhere and where to get the equipment you need to get started.  Episode-990- Glen Tate Author of 299 Days on Under the Radar Prepping and Family Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:36

The First of the 299 Days Series Today you get an opportunity to win a signed set of the first editions of the first two books in the 299 Days series.  Not just by Glen but by me as well, make sure to pay attention to how to do that in today’s episode. Glen Tate is the author of the ten-book prepper novel series “299 Days” published by Prepper Press. The books describe an average guy who prepares for, and lives through, a partial collapse of the United States. Glen joins us today for a bit of a look at the next two books in the series, an update of feedback thus far on the release of the first two books and how people are opening minds with the first two books.  We also discuss prepping with a reluctant spouse and how it can be done under the radar if necessary along with the importance of never saying “I told you so” in such important matters. The story line of 299 Days is as follows, In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain “normal.” Out at the cabin, a collection of amazing–yet real–people assemble. They create their own community because the government isn’t functioning in their area. They have to work together and, as a community, they manage to achieve some impressive results. Unlike most prepper stories, in 299 Days America suffers a partial collapse. The utilities stay one (due to a spell-binding plot twist) and the government functions in larger cities. People in rural areas still get some food and services from the government, but must increasingly rely on themselves. There are no zombies or cannibalism; 299 Days describes a much more likely partial collapse scenario. Grant’s friends, who work in government, describe how things continue to go down hill in the city and how the government is trying to maintain control. They describe exactly why the government, as big and powerful as it once was, cannot control things. Many in the military and law enforcement step in to stop the bad things; others in the military and law enforcement perpetuate the bad things. After a while out at the cabin, some important visitors arrive and present Grant with a difficult choice. Eventually, the Patriots–the side Grant is on–are forced to take on what’s left of the former government. There is a huge battle. In the end, Grant has an important job at the beginning of the rebuilding. Glen is a moderator on the TSP forum under the name “Heavy G.” He lives and works in Olympia, Washington where he has a front row seat to the corruption in government. Much like the main character in the series, the author is a forty-something resident of the capitol of Washington State, Olympia, and is a very active prepper. He grew up in the remote logging town of Forks, Washington. “Glen” keeps his identity a secret so he won’t lose his job because, in his line of work, being a prepper and questioning the motives of government is not appreciated.  Episode-985- From Pawn to Personal Sovereignty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:22

If You Wish to be Free – First Understand You are a Pawn I chose the title today in spite of the wackos at the fringe of the “sovereign citizen movement”, not because of them.  In may ways those people have polluted the concept of personal sovereignty but no other phrase really applies to what I want to discuss with you today. Personal sovereignty basically means “self ownership” and as such is much larger then any political statement.  Someone who truly lives their life based on self ownership must carry far more responsibility then just telling others that they won’t do as commanded.  The individual sovereign much accept that if they fail the failure is theirs and it will be up to them to get up and try again.  They realize any help by any other party will be voluntarily and not something they are entitled to. They will carry a burden that due to this they must also have a responsibility to help others in need, to do what is right for simply the sake of right.  They can’t rely on others to tell them when to give, what to give, how much to give or who deserves their help.  They must be responsible for themselves, their families, their communities and their nation as a whole.  The problem is today, most people even those who believe they are “free” are pawns on a giant chess board.  Just as the drug addict must first admit to being a drug addict before he can become free of drugs, so must we admit first that we are pawns if we wish to claim our birth rights of personal sovereignty. Join Me Today As I Discuss… The blog post that led to this What our nation claims to be vs. what it is Why you must first accept you are a pawn if you want to be free Why you have to let go of all dogmatic beliefs when they are proven false What is personal sovereignty What are your responsibilities as someone who owns yourself How do you break the chains that keep you on the game board What hope do we have if we indeed are all pawns?  A lot!  Episode-981- Lessons in Sustainable Living Japan’s Edo Period | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:22

An Edo Period Farm House Photo Credit to acreutz via Flickr While I was traveling to and from North Carolina for the recent self reliance expo I wasn’t laying down on the job. I was in fact doing more research for more shows, one such piece was a complete reading of the book, “Just Enough – Lessons in Living Green from Traditional Japan” by Azby Brown. The book was a fascinating look at life in Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1868) which was largely a stable period at the end of what could best be described as Japan’s feudal era along with the end of their isolationist period. The period was characterized by economic growth, strict social orders, isolationist foreign policies, an increase in both environmental protection and the creation and popular enjoyment of arts and culture. Japanese society during this period was controlled by the Tokugawa shogunate and the country’s 300 regional Daimyo (like Dukes and Lords in Europe). It was officially established in Edo on March 24, 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The period came to an end with the Meiji Restoration on May 3, 1868 after the fall of Edo. Included in the social structure were several classes of people.  They were basically, Peasant Farmers of Varying Degrees Peasant Towns People of Varying Degrees Samurai also of Varying Degrees Daimyo again the “Nobles” With in these primary groups were many additional layers, for instance some farmers owned sizable lands, say 2.5 Hectares (about 6 acres), though most land owners in this class were more likely to own about 1-2 acres.  Some were more accurately tenet farmers, having to lease land or work the land of others. Samurai also had many ranks, some would own very large tracts of land, though in the Edo period most had given up their country lands and moved to special areas of the large cities and towns.  A mid ranking Samurai would own about 990 square meters of land, (about a quarter of an acre) and on it have a house that would average about 99 square meters, (just over 1,000 square feet), this was considered an absolute luxury by many peasant towns people who often lived in one room apartments that were on average 12 x 16 feet and would house an entire family. Today we examine many of the ways these people lived a 100% self sufficient lifestyle as a nation.  Remember during this period Japan was almost a 100% closed society, having little to no trade or interaction with any nation outside of their own borders.  Yet cities like Edo with populations over 1 million had little incidence of plague or rampant disease, very few if any people (even the poorest starved) and much of the pressured environment was restored and protected. Join us today as we discuss…. Lessons from a Peasant Farmer The production possible from 2-6 acres In some places livestock are not sustainable Forests must be preserved Irrigation can be accomplished with 90%+ gravity A dirt floor may not be a sign of poverty in some parts of a house High taxes are nothing new (25-50% on farmers) Lessons from Peasant Town’s People What you need is far less then you think it is Rebuild our distinctive neighborhood communities Put human waste to good use Fix things, if they are truly broken recycle them Design with reuse, recycle and return to earth in mind Design cities and towns with walking in mind Create common areas Lessons from mid ranking Samurai A quarter of an acre can make one largely self sufficient Develop local and even micro economies for stability Embrace cottage industries Build edible fish ponds in back yards Value education, meditation and relaxation Plant trees for beauty and for production Design home that can be “reconfigured” Understand how much the average person really has today Create what you long for, don’t just dream of it Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper MURS Radio – (sponsor of the day) Bulk Ammo – (spo[...]
