Episode-1021- Brad and Mike from Full Sprectrum Survival | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:56:01

Brad and Mike of Full Spectrum Survival Mike and Brad have been immersed in the survival and preparedness genre for over 15 years. The feel they have been greatly blessed to be able to live on a large piece of property in the middle of Florida where they have been able to dive deeply into both. Their group has a unique skill set in that we are able to create mock scenarios for ourselves both on paper and in reality and the participating members of the group must work their way through these scenarios They have documented this in their Tactical Scenario Youtube Series. At the behest of a few of their friends and people that they consider influential in the genre, they created a Youtube channel after years and years of just being watchers and listeners in the community. Brad and Mike were always in their own words, “those silent viewers that would soak in all of the information that great podcasts such as TSP and Youtube channels had to offer”. Today they join us to discuss their work and emergency preparedness. They also have a very large announcement for the prepper community that they will be sharing with us today.  Episode-1020- Geoff Lawton on Permaculture and Blake Girardot on Maker Workshops | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:43

Geoff Lawton has a New Permaculture Education Outreach Initiative Today is a really amazing show, I promise you it will be one of the most informative TSP episodes ever.  We have two parts to today’s show. The first is about 15 minutes of a mini segment with Geoff Lawton about his new initiative to broaden Permaculture’s influence and increase its reach. Geoff is doing this though a new web based format that has many things coming.  Yesterday I released a teaser video (well 30 minutes of amazing instruction is what Geoff sees as a teaser) and the response was so great he agreed to come on TSP and tell us a bit more about it. Geoff to me is currently the most gifted designer and teacher we have in the permaculture movement.  The fact that he is now directing the movement at groups outside of the core eco centric usual suspects is huge.  Specifically now I feel he has realized how on board with sustainable design the prepper movement is and much of what he is doing is very much directed at out community. Blake’s Solar Back Up System, Built at a Maker Workshop Following Geoff’s segment we have Blake Girardot on Maker Workshops.  When Blake approached me for an interview I found the concept pretty cool but really didn’t have any idea how cool this movement really is.  Oh and just wait until you hear the synergy that exists between this concept and the 13 Skills Challenge! The maker movement is all about people helping people to be more self sufficient and self reliant via skills based creation of everything from software to artisan wood craft and anything and everything you can think of in between. Imagine having a membership to a facility where you could go and gain access to anything from a band saw to a laser engraver to a wood lathe.  Or even say a place where you could use a 3D printer to prototype an item and then have injection molding equipment to produce the new item in quantity.   Cool right?  Well, what if you could also find people there that would teach you how to use all this cool stuff? That is a thin scratch of the maker movement!  This is honestly one of the most empowering concepts I have ever heard of, and the potential to build community and skill sets at the same time in enormous.   Maker Workshops can be a way to learn a viable trade, fabricate something you can’t buy, simply learn new skills or even a gateway into a business of your own.  The cost?  50-100 dollars a month depending on the facility.  Episode-1019- The Role of Animals in Permaculture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:59:09

Properly Managed Chickens Can Convert Pasture to Forest Geoff Lawton just released a great video that represents the beginnings of an awesome new project and it fits in great with today’s show topic.  In his video which addresses preparing for future crisis with permaculture Geoff shows how chickens can be used to establish a food forest 150 square meters at a time. This is just one role that livestock both small and large can play in a permaculture system.  From talking to hundreds of people I am convinced that you can have some sort of livestock in just about any environment. To me if you really wish to branch out into individual sustainability at some point animals must become part of the formula.  Today I discuss how to do that and how to actually sculpt land with animals being one of your tools in doing so.  We discuss how to do this on a large acreage or even a small suburban lot. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Why animals in the first place, what does nature teach us Understanding soil creation both fungal and bacterial Using chickens to restore a pasture OR create a food forest Using ducks for pest control and free ranging them in “forest” The role animals play in nutrient bioavailability How improperly managed animals can destroy a system How to adapt large scale animal concepts into small scale operations Using animals in suburban environments How to even use animals covertly in suburban environments Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade The TSP Gear Shop The TSP Copper Shop Join Our Forum Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Geoff Lawton’s New Video on Permaculture to Advert Pending Crisis Paul Wheaton Article on Paddocks for Chickens Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1018- The Vision of the TSP DRT | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:18

Disasters are Nothing New as this Photo from 1900 Clearly Shows A week ago I floated the idea of a new group, the TSP-DRT or The Survival Podcast Disaster Response Team.  Due to a large number of both positive and negative responses on Friday I released a blog post explaining it a bit more in depth.  Today I will lay out a true vision for the DRT with far more details and a better explanation of the role I see the DRT playing in the future. I will also lay out my concepts of a vetting process for DRT Team members along with minimum level training/certifications.  Additionally I will tell you why I feel such a new group is necessary rather then TSP simply joining or partnering with an existing group. From there I will lay out my concept for on going training, drills, community outreach and “musters” along with how we can ensure that on site responders are aware of the DRT and can understand how to best utilize our assistance. There are two primary goals with today’s show… Explain the DRT Concept Fully to the TSP Community Provide a vision and starting point to the DRT Leadership Team Join Me Today As We Discuss… Why the DRT and why now Why we really do need to do this as an individual group Why I will only be an adviser to the leadership council Minimum level skills/training/certification required to be part of DRT The operations manual and making it available to other responders How responders/LEOs will be able to vet our team members in seconds How DRT will be different by providing the “most needed” items on demand The need for initial drills, non-disaster deployments and musters The primary concepts I currently have for what the DRT will do Why those that say it can’t be done should get out of the way of those already doing it Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum TSP Copper ShelfReliance.com – (sponsor of the day) Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) Red Cross Claims their Sandy Response was “Near Flawless” Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1016- Joe Nobody on “The Home Schooled Shootist” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:59

The Home Schooled Shootist by Joe Nobody Joe Nobody is the author of several best selling books including “Holding Your Ground” ,”The TEOTWAWKI Tuxedo”, “Holding Their Own” and “Without Rule of Law”. Joe has over 30 years as a government and private contractor experience and is a professional firearms instructor and competition shooter. Joe Nobody’s latest book, “The Home Schooled Shootist, Training to Fight With a Carbine” is an instruction guide for intermediate to advanced shooters. It addresses fighting with shoulder-fired weapons at ranges 0 through 600 meters. Of his new book Joe states, “Shootist was written due to popular demand. It seemed like everyone who knows me personally kept up the pressure to write a book on gun fighting. “Teaching people is what you do best Joe,” was a common statement. Many readers of my other books corresponded with questions or requests associated with the contents herein. Still, I hesitated because from my perspective, few people will ever require these skills. Over the last year or so, my opinion changed. We Americans have a long tradition of excellence with shoulder fired weapons. Throughout much of our history, marksmanship and bravery were enough. Those days are long behind us. Advancements in technology have raised the standard and despite droves of people purchasing military grade weapons, optics and accessories, few people develop the skills necessary to properly utilize these assets.” Joes new book is divided into three basic sections: How to create and execute eleven different drills that sharpen skills necessary to survive violent encounters How to evaluate the results of these exercises How to improve the operator’s capabilities The book covers topics ranging from sight pictures, on-range and off-range training techniques, and even rifle specific weight training.   This is a book intended for those who want to train at their own pace, using their own facilities. The drills are creative, unique and can be challenging. Detailed instructions are included on how to construct the various training tools and courses.  Episode-1015- Disaster Response and Backyard Bee Keeping | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:02

Citizens Helping Citizens is Critical in a Disaster Join me today for a two parter,  First a mini segment on an idea I want to develop with this community in 2013, the TSP-DRT or The Survival Podcast – Disaster Response Team. As I watch people in need in NJ and NY right now I want to help and I have realized I am highly prepared to take care of my family, myself and my neighborhood.  I realize, however, that I am not well prepared to help fellow citizens many states away, and I should be. Next we have Keith Blazer on for an interview on amateur back yard bee keeping.  I have had quite a few people on who are deeply involved with bee keeping at a professional level.  With Keith we have an everyday member of the audience that has had both success and failure with his bee keeping. After hearing his story I think many more audience members will feel comfortable giving bee keeping a shot. I know it has me more fired up then any previous interview, all I can think of is man that would be a lot of mead!  Episode-1014- Hand Tools and Homestead Gear | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:07

A Husqvarna 450 with an 18 Inch Bar is my go to Chainsaw I think it is a good time to look at some common hand tools and homestead gear specifically with winter approaching.  Winter presents quite a few opportunities for repair and maintenance. First, I am not sure why but winter is when many things that have always worked decide it is time to break down.  It is like they want a rest from the action just like everyone else or something. Second, many of the tasks we have to do frequently in the Spring, Summer or Fall are not necessary in winter.  Even for those of us that garden, you very seldom need to water an weed.  So many of the things that get put off during the busy season are prime for getting done in the slower months. Third, a lot of maintenance work just sucks to do when it is 100 plus degrees outside.  Doing them in a warm garage or shop or doing them on a sunny winter day is just a lot more fun then sweating your brains out. Fourth, winter can get boring and wear you down.  Days are short, nights are long and once hunting season is over cabin fever can set in hard and fast.  Doing maintenance, repairs, upkeep and projects in this time helps us stay positive and be up and running full out when spring arrives. Join Me Today as We Discuss… Tools I think should be on every homestead The Chainsaw (gas is primary but electrics have a place) Rechargeable/Power Tools Drill (make sure to have plenty of bits) Reciprocating Saw Circular Saw Cut Off Tool Impact Driver Jig Saw Grinder A good axe and a good hatchet A good sickle or corn knife Shovels, Hoes, etc. Hand Tools that Everyone Should Have Hammer (at minimum sledge, mini sledge and claw) Socket Set Screw Driver Set A set of driver tips and hex keys Wrench Set Adjustable Wrench Channel Locks Vice Grips Chisels Wire Brushes Planing tools Tape Measures, rulers, yardsticks, etc Level Square Cross and Rip Saws Hack Saw C-Clamps Pipe Wrench Pliers of All Common Form Files Sharpening stones Lots of nails, screws, bolts, washers, etc. Some Real Nice to Have Stuff Log splitter A press A scythe A shop vac Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Safecastle Royal – (sponsor of the day) Survival Gear Bags  – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. I will also talk a bit about what the media is saying, somethings that are very accurate and important.  However, what is sad is what they are not saying and how they are dis-empowering people by making simple acts of decency into so called “heroic action”.  There are many lessons to be learned from Sandy, today we look at a few of them.  Episode-1011- What is Modern Survivalism Really All About | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:48

Learn from the Past, Live in the Now, Plan for the Future Every day I get an email from some company that wants something from the TSP community.  They want to promote some new gadget or gizmo, on occasion it is something really new, cool and useful.   More often then not though it is some repackaged crap or over priced assembly of commonly available components. Since I have told off just about every major network executive like those making the horrible crappy “Doomsday ________” shows they contact me less frequently but it still happens.  They are always looking to discuss the “end of the world” and do a good job of feigning false support of the idea. Additionally of my 200-500 daily emails a good portion are new audience members that are in a huge state of fear.  Most just found out recently that everything isn’t okay and super and that real threats exist.  They are generally focused on one or two major threats and freaked out.  The ones who have been listening to Alex Jones are generally the worst. These are three very different groups of people, but they all have the same problem, they don’t really know what real survivalism is all about.  Yep real survivalism, but I call it modern survivalism, today we discuss why.  In short to me, modern survivalism is a lifestyle that builds redundancy first around our needs, then around our wants and lastly around luxury so that we can live a better life. Join Us Today As We Discuss… The bullshit statement, “I am not a prepper I am a real survivalist” What my real goals are for my nation and the rest of the world for that matter Why reactionary prepping is dangerous and counter productive How to decouple from fear based action Balancing the reality of true threats with common sense Why understanding needs is important Food Water Shelter Energy Security Sanitation and Health Why living life effectively when times are good is the best form of preparedness Insure your needs have redundancies Build real wealth in every way you can Bet neither on failure or success, either way you will lose Develop skills and knowledge daily Learn from others but don’t try to be who they are Trust yourself more then anyone else, including me Learn from the past, live in the now, plan for the future Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1009- Permaculture Lessons and Observations from 2012 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:25

Today I want to take a look back at much of what we have learned in regard to permaculture over the mostly now passed year.  In 2012 I attended two major permaculture events, planted over 35 trees, experienced my first full season with hugulkultur beds and more. I also received huge numbers of questions by email about permaculture that have taught me that many good permaculturists are often lousy at explaining big picture reality, myself included.  To examine that we will discuss the most common question about large scale permaculture I get today. Join me today as we discuss… What is Permaculture for those new to the concept Why I think we should call most US hugulkultur simply “woody beds” Why I think woody beds work so well and it ain’t what everyone says What we need to start teaching the permaculture youth crowd, reality Why Permaculture courses need the addition of “hard skills” The missed opportunity in small scale urban design Where grain fields fit into the equation How can you practice permaculture/polyculture on a large scale The future of permaculture at the individual level The future of permaculture at the commercial level Why a full working acre may be optimum for small family concerns The animals I see as the “best bets” for working families Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper Back Yard Food Production – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) Geoff Lawton’s DVDs – (The urban one is probably the best of the series) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
