Episode-932- Selco from SHTF School on Survival During the Balkan Wars | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:57:39

This was Relaity for Millions in the Balkans In the 1990s as Yugoslavia broke up a series of conflicts erupted that are often called the Third Balkan War.  In fact what this was amounted to a series of regional conflicts that were in essence several different civil wars. In the middle of this region lived a young man we shall call Selco who simply was happy to have friends and a job along with playing in a local rock band.  Something that could have come right out of Americana.  Then almost overnight the entire dream became a nightmare.  The region was in the middle of a war, there was absolutely no support for over a year. During this year Selco and his group lived without running water, no electricity, no food service or grocery stores, no distribution of any goods and absolutely no legitimate law enforcement.  It was a time when simply walking down certain streets during daylight hours would be met with a hale of sniper fire.  A time when a man who stood alone would meet with certain death.  A time with very little medical care, abysmal sanitation and where most people buried dead comrades and family members in their back yards. Today Selco still lives in this area and he runs a website called “Shit Hit the Fan School” where he provides information on what happened, what worked, what didn’t and how order was eventually restored.  There is no other source of education on survival of a complete breakdown better then from someone who didn’t just live it, but survived it.  Episode-931- 15 Questions and Answers on Preparedness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:47

Today I Answer 15 Questions I am Always Asked. In 2008 when people asked me what I did if I mentioned this show they always seems a bit taken back, guarded and looked at me like perhaps my tin foil hat was showing a little.  Today though things are different, when I meet people at the farmer’s market, the compost facility, the supermarket, business meetings etc. and they ask what I do I am now greeted with interest and questions. Some of these questions are almost universal, some are a bit odd and some clearly tell me I am dealing with either a newbie or a seasoned prepper looking to go further.  Given many of them are very common questions though I figured I would do an episode today on some of them.  This will likely be a great show for newbies and hopefully have some interesting stuff for people who have been around a long time as well. Join Me Today as I Answer… What is the biggest threat we face nationally? How can I afford to get prepared when I can barely get by already? How much land do you need to produce 100% of your own food? How to you test your preps, more often stated as how do I know if I’ve done enough? How much food should I store? What do you think will happen where I live? (usually from suburbanites) Don’t you think it would be 100% safe in rural ares? (usually from those who live rural) How do I get my wife/husband/brother/uncle/etc to understand this stuff? What should I do if I have no place to evacuate to? How big of a solar system do I need to provide all my own energy? How long can a generator run my house for me? If I have lots of gold and silver won’t that make me rich if the economy collapses? What kind of gun should I get?  How much ammo is enough? etc. I want to put a group together how do I find like minded people? Why do you tell people about what you do, isn’t that a mistake?  Episode-930- Lacto Fermentation and Other Ways to Use Excess Production | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:10

The Schmitt 5L Fermenting Crock Pot Likely if you garden (or even just hit the Farmer’s Market or get stuff from your gardening neighbors) you are either in peak production or soon will be.  Often the stuff we love the most comes in with such abundance that we can’t possibly keep up with it. Sometimes this is just great as part of why most of us grow our own food is to create long term storage so out comes the canning gear and dehydrator, or the steamer and blanch and freeze is the name of the game.  Yet sometimes we don’t have quite enough to warrant the canning gear or we simply just don’t feel like it on an dog day in the middle of summer. What to do then?  What do you do with 12 big cucumbers when the neighbors are like, no thanks we have enough now.  What about those jalapenos that are not quite big enough for the bacon and cheese wrap but you don’t feel like dehydrating them yet because you know the fall will bring so many for that it really isn’t necessary.  What about those zucchini that just keep coming and coming? Today I will focus mostly on lacto fermentation for short term use and refrigerated storage along with a few other things that can use up or extend the shelf life of all the abundance this time of year provides. Join Me Today As I Discuss… The basics salt and sometimes water Fermentation vessels from simple to refined Why I like smaller crocks and would prefer several of them to one big one Making basic fermented pickles a great start Yes it is completely safe and the mold on top won’t hurt you Do you need whey? No but I will tell you how to get it anyway Some recipes Basic fermented pickles Fermented jalapenos Jalapeno Escabeche Fermented zucchini Beet and apple relish  Chow Chow – roll your own recipe that’s how its done Some other shelf life extenders for veggies Salsa, pico and bruschetta Cucumber vinegar salad Some creative recipes and cooking ideas Fried green tomatoes Zucchini chips (long term storable and short term snack) Cucumber melon salad or salsa The big thing, just try stuff, if something isn’t good don’t do it again Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) TSP Copper Basic Fermented Sour Pickles Fermented Beet and Apple Relish Lacto Fermented Escabeche A good fermented jalapenos recipe Fermented Zucchini Pickles Fermented Hot Pepper Sauce How to make Yogurt Cheese and Whey The Schmitt 5L Fermenting Crock I Own Good Selection of Fermenting Crocks Lid with airlock for fermenting in wide mouth jars Pickl-It Fermentation Jars – Affordable and they work well Make your own fermenting jar – cheap and super easy Wild Fermentation – My favorite book on the subject Making Sauerkraut and Pickled Vegetables at Home – another good book on the subject Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-924- Lessons Learned on the Arkansas Homestead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:41

Hugelkultur Was a Success at the Homestead As many of you know we are now looking to purchase a larger piece of land in Texas.  That will balance well with the apartment we keep in Arlington providing us living quarters both in the city and the country.  The new land in Texas will become our primary residence. We are not sure about what to do with the Arkansas property right now.  On one hand it is very inexpensive on the other it would generate a lot of cash if we sold it at this point.  Many listeners who have watched me grow TSP from the early days have expressed a desire to hear exactly why we are not going to make Arkansas our permanent home when we put so much work into getting to a point were we could.   The reality is our property has a LOT going for it, it also has a lot missing from what we currently want. My hope is today’s show will help others learn from both our successes and failures so they can make better choices about purchasing property, homesteading, raising livestock, etc. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Leaving family far behind may be harder then you thought The importance of feeling “vested” in the larger community As your view of the world changes so does your view of “perfect property” 5 acres may be enough, it might not be, how does the land lay Mountain land may not be all it is cracked up to be, or it might be Why I feel so strongly now about putting a lot of a property into water structure Why I am now more interested in daily self sufficiency and less in “buggin out” Thoughts on having an ability to “house” additional people Land that provides the opportunity to really teach others Livestock I want to work with and why it won’t work in Ark Deals are now available that just were not before Some general principles we have learned Always have an exit strategy Invest in property to make it at least 1% better then its class Mobile homes are fine for what they are Having no real restrictions rocks See a property for what it can be but count the cost You really can’t go to low on an offer, you really can’t The community is as important as the property Useable land is more important then total land area Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) My Permaculture Principles Video Series on Youtube Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-920- Building Self Reliance in Our Children | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:15

After I answered a question by John from West Virginia on Friday’s show I have received a ton of email asking me to do a full show devoted to teaching our children self sufficiency and self reliance. I am going to do that show today but I want to point something out.  I am not nor do I claim to be a parenting expert.  I simply have had the honor of serving as a step father to a great kid who now has grown into a fine young man.  I think Dorothy and I did a great job, much of what I share today will be what we did, however, much will be what we didn’t learn until we did it wrong first. Parenting is a skill like any other skill, you yourself grow in knowledge overtime and will likely have reached the pinnacle of your parenting skill set at the point where you kids no longer require it of you, why do you think kids are generally so fond of grandparents? Join Me Today As We Discuss… My limitation, no real experience in the kindergarten and back years Understanding “growth” and that it takes time Working with your children, not judging their “progress” on the “progress” of others Rules we brought up our son with As you grown you should end up with less rules every year If you cry for something you don’t get it period You are expected to pitch in around the house Allowance is a paycheck, it also is a two way street Never lie to us, you will need our trust some day When I ask you what you think about something, IDK isn’t an answer We never buy anything of consequence with out a thinking period first Saving money is important, so is giving it away When you make a bad choice it is your fault and your responsibility to make it right You can have anything but not everything you want Life isn’t fair, it isn’t supposed to be, oh and likely you don’t want things to be fair either We always have your back, always Things I would suggest any parent consider in raising their children They are small growing people not dolls to be dressed or clay to be formed Their opinions should be heard and matter even when not followed You child needs to be sad, mad, upset, hurt and unhappy at times If they say they can do it themselves, shut up and let them try Don’t put them in sports where “everybody wins” Teach them to value education and don’t lie about the value of school Remember what you do is more important than what you say Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
