 Episode-1053- Ian McCollum of ForgottenWeapons.com | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:05

The Most Lethal Tricycle of All Time, a Great Example of a Forgotten Weapon. Ian McCollum grew up around his father’s extensive collection of WWII Japanese rifles, and early on developed an appreciation for historically interesting old guns. His gun collecting began in earnest after leaving college, and expanded into an interest in building guns and studying rare and unusual designs in museums and private collections worldwide. Today he shares his passion for old military guns specifically many of them that have been lost to the annals of history on his blog called, ForgottenWeapons.com Ian blogs 6 times a week reviewing guns, historical reference books and posts some incredible old photography as well. He joins us today to discuss surplus firearms and NFA weapons.  We also discuss a bit about current proposed gun legislation and the damage it could do to both historical weapons and the modern gun industry. Join Ian and I Today as we Discuss… The process for legally buying a machine gun “Cleaning a gun after using corrosive surplus ammo Do NFA weapons have a practical use for the modern survivalist When are surplus military guns preferable to new-production civilian guns Should I get an AR or AK?  Episode-1052- The Need for Skill Set Development in a Changing World | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:44

Today we announced a new feature to 13skills.com that will improve interaction among members.  This got me thinking that while I often talk about our need to improve skills (specifically hard skills) I have not ever really done a dedicated show specifically going into the actual reasons that such skills are so important. Our modern age has lulled us to sleep but most people that listen to TSP are aware that major changes are not just coming, in many ways they are happening right now, in front of our eyes.  We live in a society where people “call a guy” far more often then fixing things themselves.  We teach our children to avoid phyical work at all costs and are devolving into tablet and phone based society. I personally love technology but consider that we teach a student basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division prior to empowering them with a calculator.  Should we not also teach young drivers to use street signs and read a map before giving them a GPS application? I also have some follow up from yesterday, one issue I seem to have been very wrong about in regard to college and I wish to make it right and something very dangerous in the so called “NRA Members Gun Safety Act” I left out yesterday. Join Me Today as We Discuss… Follow Up From Episode 1051 Listener’s weigh in on the value of community college even with advanced degree pursuit Why the no fly list and terror watch lists do NOT belong in the gun control debate On Today’s Main Topic What a faltering economy or economic collapse means in regard to skills Hard skills vs. soft skills and why we need to emphasize hard skills on some levels How we lost our skills as modern Americans Why we actually feel fulfilled and good about ourselves by building up our skills Why you should focus on the skills that interest you but also challenge you How the loss of skills is directly related to our loss of liberty Why responsibilities must be part of our rights if we are to retain said rights Why real teachers don’t create students but new teachers What have you done with your dash, what will you leave behind  Resources for Today’s Show: Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper The Berkey Guy  – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants  – (sponsor of the day) HR 21 – The Reissued Version of Bill HR 6725 Win Free Tickets to The Free State Project’s Liberty Forum Why Issues Like the “Terror Watch List” and “No Fly List” Should Not be Part of Gun Control – YouTube Video Segment from Today’s TSP Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1049- Surving Superstorm Sandy and The Southern Maryland Beekeeper | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:23

Check Out The Backyard Pioneer We have two interviews for you today, first up Mike Prunty “The Backyard Pioneer” who has a small urban homestead in Long Island New York on his experience with Hurricane Sandy. Mike is a 39 year old suburban husband and father, he works as a Lineman for Verizon and is an avid hunter and do it yourselfer.  He heats with wood and grows a big garden each year. This year he started to get into using a smoker and has his first batch of home brew going right now.  Unfortunately like many in the North East his progress was more then slightly impeded by Super Storm Sandy. Today Mike joins us to discuss Hurricane Sandy and it’s immediate after math for his family and how our basic preps made life easier.  Today we discuss the last minute preps he made and how that made a big difference along with what it was like living on generator power for an extended period. We also talk to mike about how his friends and neighbors reacted to his skills and knowledge during the event.  Then  we discuss what Mike calls the  “indispensable prep” and how it made the biggest difference of all. Finally we finsh up with after now experiencing a big disaster what Mike will do differently and what holes in his preps were exposed. Check out the Southern Maryland Bee Keeper Next we move on to Craig Yardon, “The Southern Maryland Bee Keeper” for a discussion that is the end of our series on keeping bees. Craig discusses the on going threat of CCD, natural bee keeping and the concept of “small cell” bee keeping and how it can drastically improve the bees ability to withstand the virola mights that are currently a huge problem for many keepers. We also discuss the advantages of the warre hive and how it is sort of a cross roads between top bar and conventional bee keeping including the huge advantage of being able to take honey off the top of the hive. We also discuss how to improve the virility of your hive, how to raise bees with no chemicals and how owning bees can drastically improve your results on the homestead beyond honey production.  Episode-1047- The Christmas Special For 2012 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:28:33

Most of today’s show is a rebroadcast of 2008′s Christmas special. Today we pause and take a moment to reflect on Christmas and how it has become the Holiday we celebrate today. Many American’s have no idea just how Christmas became unique here in America, the role it played in bringing our nation together after two wars of independence and the civil war. Christmas is special and a time to pause and reflect. Christmas is indeed a special time of year, today I will cover many aspects of it that may make this Christmas just a bit more special. There is also a full text transcription on of the non commercial portion of today’s show in the show notes below. Tune in today to hear about… Christmas was banned in England at one time and even parts of America Early Americans didn’t really celebrate Christmas, (congress was in session on Dec 25th, 1789) In the early 1800s Christmas was a rowdy holiday spurred by class conflict, turmoil and unemployment In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon bringing us many “ancient customs”, he simply invented Leading up to the Civil War, Christmas was a “southern holiday” and Thanksgiving a “northern holiday” How Christmas and Thanksgiving together helped to heal a young America Today is a time to pause, reflect and just be, prepping, planning and stress will all wait patiently for you Different ending music for today’s show! The most beautiful version of Oh Holly Night I have ever heard, just pause, listen and realize what really matters while it plays.  Episode-1045- Every Day “Disasters” and DIY Prepping and The Criminal Mindset with David Nash | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:28

Today we have a minor inconvenience when our power went out.  Out came the 6K Troy-Bilt Generator and soon daily emails were being handled and hot coffee was had by all.  I posted a picture of it on Facebook and was amazed how a few fellow preppers sort of crapped on the concept. It was a very few but still it shows a problem with mindset in my view.  To the guy who recommended solar I am not including you in this group of a few, don’t want you getting your panties in a wad or anything, LOL. One person said, “warm water, hot coffee and TV won’t help you when TSHTF”.  My question is if you are not prepared to be comfortable in a routine system failure how on earth can you claim that you are ready for the Zombie Apocalypse?  I will also tell you as a business owner not being able to run your business is a disaster. So in the first part of today’s show I talk a bit about this concept and how it relates to yesterday’s segment on getting started. Then I introduce David Nash of TNGun.com.  David is a full time emergency manger by trade, and an advocate of self-reliance and personal preparedness by avocation.  He is also instructor certified in a variety of topics such as firearms, terrorism response, WMD, and incident command.  He’s written two books, and runs a DIY focused prepper website, based around his training business “The Shepherd School”. Today he joins us first to talk about prepping from a DIY standpoint.  David feels prepping is full of $500 problems, but if you only have $50, you  have to use other ways of making up the difference, we also want to talk about my upcoming book “52 projects for self reliance”. From there we move into some of his experiences as a corrections officer and we take a real look into the criminal and violent mindsets that many people simply cannot seem to get their heads around.  During this period I tell the story of how my grandfather was shot, even though he complied with a robber and how fighting back and running away saved his life.  Episode-1044- Meals in Jars with Jennifer Ess and Starting Out as a Prepper | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:42

From #10 Cans to Meals Ready to Go! I have a great interview with Jennifer Ess of “Rainy Day Food Storage” for you today.  We only talked for about 25 minutes but the ideas and tips and simple formulas are great.  With this information you can turn all those huge cans of long term storage food into meal size ready to go recipes. Jennifer joins us today to discuss why creating meals in a jar makes sense for busy people.  The self life of these meals.  The easy way to make these meals shelf stable.  A simple formula for creating your own recipes and how you guys can free sauce mixes and jar meal recipes from Jennifer. I have also been getting a ton of “I am just starting out” or “I have just found your podcast” emails lately.  Such emails always go on to say “I am overwhelmed and don’t know where to start” in the next sentence.  It is totally understandable. I have been trying to figure out where to fit in a new “getting started” episode and this is a great opportunity.  First Jennifer’s method of breaking down long term storage foods will make that far less intimidating for many people.  Additionally the very basic of “eat what you store and store what you eat” is a great way to get the ball rolling. So I am leading off today with a short segment (about 25-30 minutes) on getting started and then we switch over to Jennifer and take this simple approach to a bit of a higher level with pre planned meals in a jar.  Oh and ladies, they really are pretty too.  I think I said pretty more times in this episode then all others episodes of TSP combine, um that would be two.  Episode-1043- A Look into the Reality of Violence | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:31:24

First today I take some time to do a follow up on yesterdays show/video where I discussed how the “lock down” plan most of our schools have does not “keep our children safe” as we have been led to believe.  Many people called it Monday morning quarterbacking (such people don’t know the real meaning of the term) and some brought up some very valid “what if” questions. So today I will cover more on the subject.  I also want to be clear I was not advocating “the plan” should be evacuate and only evacuate, just that evacuate needs to be part of the plan.  Right now what most schools have seems to be a two stage plan, “Plan A” hide and wait for help, with no real Plan B, hence Plan B becomes by default, if Plan A fails everyone gets killed. I also give some thought and ideas to improve the odds of survival in these situations, things that can start being done now, at little to no cost.  Lastly we do have some good news out of the CT shootings, one little boy at least who was in one of the rooms the shooter entered is alive and at least physically unharmed.  Why?  Simply put because he ran away. Rory On Location in Baghdad Next we have Rory Miller as a guest to discuss a unfortunately applicable topic today, the reality of violence.  Rory Miller has been a Corrections Officer, a Sergeant, a Tactical Team member and a Tactical Team Leader. Rory has taught corrections and enforcement personnel skills from first aid to physical defense to crisis communication and mental health. His philosophy can be summed up this way… “It is better to avoid than to run; better to run than to de-escalate; better to de-escalate than to fight; better to fight than to die.  The very essence of self-defense is a thin list of things that might get you out alive when you are already screwed.” Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Copper TSP Gear Shop Back Yard Food Production – (sponsor of the day) JM Bullion – (sponsor of the day) Story of the Little Boy Who Survived by Running Away Chiron Training – Rory’s Website Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
