Episode-945- Weeds that aren’t Weeds and Other Unusal Edibles | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:13

Nope it isn’t Lambsquarters it is Huauzontle (Wah-Zont-Lay) Recently I posted a photo on facebook included here in the show notes.  The photo is of a plant called huauzontle (pronounced wah-zont-lay), a relative of lambsquarters.  While only one person guessing the plant species got it right what actually surprised me was they crescendo of the use of the word “weed”. Sometimes I sit and wonder if tomatoes and peppers and lettuce just grew in large swaths on their own would we call them weed too?  For example this so called weed huauzontle has actually been cultivated for centuries and is currently “en vogue” with many Mexican gardeners in LA. I find it interesting that many of the plants I purposely plant in my garden like lambsquartes, huauzontle and purslane are classified as weeds by so many others.  Am I just so weirdo that likes “weeds” or is there something more to it?  Many of these plants are great eating, easy to cultivate and pack a great nutritional punch.  Many are also great for livestock, wildlife support, predator habitat and still others do all of the above. Join Me Today As We Discuss the Merits of These Unusual Edible Plants First what is a weed and what isn’t? Plants I love to grow that many call weeds Lambsquarters (seed source) Huauzontle (seed source) Chickweed (seed source) Dandelion (seed source – Bonus – “French Dandelion“) Purslane (seed source) Sumac (How to Propagate Sumac) Wild Mucadine – (Video on how to “air bud” them) Chicory (seed source) Plantain (seed source) Plants you won’t find in the average garden or back yard Amaranth (seed source – There are hundreds of varieties and sources) Skirret (seed source scroll almost to the bottom of the page) Birdhouse Gourd (seed source) Bushel Gourd (seed source) Millet (seed source) Perilla Leaf (seed source) Perennial Onions “walking” and “multiplier” (seed source) Perennial Leaks (seed source) Buckwheat (seed source) Red Cow Peas (seed source) Tepary Beans (seed source) Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Meet Me in Arlington for the Self Reliance Expo Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Nutritional Info on Tepary Beans Some of My Favorite Small Seed Suppliers to Find Unusual Stuff – These are a group of small seed houses where I have found many unusual and all but lost to time seed varieties and species.  Episode-944- Phil Chandler “The Barefoot Beekeeper” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:45

Phil Chandler the Barefoot Bee Keeper Phil Chandler got his “wake-up call” in 1971 when he met Edward Goldsmith who was about to launch The Ecologist magazine.  Phil lived for several years in the 1970s a hut in the hills in northern England, learning to fend for himself by hunting, growing, learning about farming. Along the way he started own printing business, published local magazines, and later progressed to data processing when computers became available. He even taught IT for a while, then ran rehab project for people with disabilities, many ex-military. Phil heavily campaigned against GM crops in 1990s, during which time he came to realize the real importance of bees and other pollinators. It was at that time that he took up beekeeping in 2000.  His research on modern methods led him to conclude that things needed to change.  So he experimented with hives and settled on top bar hive.  A few years ago he wrote “The Barefoot Beekeeper”  which has now sold over 15,000 copies worldwide . Tim joins us today to discuss natural beekeeping for homesteaders and survivalists and answers questions like,  Why are bee so important?, What’s wrong with modern beekeeping? What needs to change with modern agriculture? What can the average non-beekeeper do to help the bees? and What is special about “natural beekeeping”?  Episode-943- Tim Ammons of Oleo Acres Farm | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:54:10

Curing Meat the Old Fashioned Way at Oleo Acres Farm Tim Ammons runs Oleo Acres farm a self sustaining farm that teaches individuals the old fashioned way of being “Green”.  He joins us today to discuss self sustainable living and farming as a way to support family and community. On his 20 acre farm in Tennessee Tim still practices many techniques and skills that have largely been lost.  Such as the growing of 7 very old heirloom varieties of sorghum which are then converted into sorghum syrup using old methods.  At one time sorghum syrup was the most common sweetener in the US, Tim is still growing it and making it the old fashioned way. He is also a big time gardener with may tips and tricks developed over almost 40 years of gardening and farming.  He will teach us today about timing your plantings, companion and succession planting and even a great, simple and completely organic way to combat the dreaded squash bug, which is public garden enemy number one for much of the TSP audience.  Episode-938- Understanding the Problems vs the Symptoms | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:42

Now This is a Problem Yesterday I included a response to a claim by a listener that Walmart was “destroying America”.  In doing so I didn’t claim Walmart was a fine company or that they should be supported. I simply pointed out that all the big businesses that compete with them did the same types of things.  That a boycott of Walmart would accomplish little and we could actually use large companies like Walmart more effectively to get rid of specific products like “pink slime”. Well, you guys say I have it wrong, really?  What do I have wrong?  My view is this is a deeper problem where a specific grudge and anger blind people to the truth.  Walmart isn’t the problem, it is but a symptom of the actual problem. Going to war with Walmart in the current system is like giving a headache patient an aspirin and thinking it will fix the problem.  It might feel better but the problem remains.  This isn’t just a corporate issue, it is a government one and a monetary one, in fact that is the entire point. When there is an illness if you are a good doctor the symptoms are used only to diagnose the illness and you correct the imbalance in the system that is the root cause.  The reality is if you only treat the symptom, the illness gets worse.  You can cut out a tumor yet a cancer patient will often still die. Join Me Today As I Discuss… What is a boycott and why they don’t work on large companies Why 20,000 backyard chickens is better then 45,000 people avoiding Walmart One time just so you get it, I DON’T THINK WALMART IS GOOD Why I always say Monsanto, Conagra and Bayer not just Monsanto Finding the real problem Step one – follow the money Step two – see step one Step three – understand individual behavior Step four – understand the total system not one component Step five – see step one What does work Focus on the positives Build and value community Reduce and eliminate debt Do business with the best company available Accept that the debt based system is going to fail Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-935- The Economic Collapse that is in Process | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:15

The Current Economy is a Monetary Black Hole! I feel it is becoming more clear that our pending economic collapse isn’t something that will happen but something that is happening right in front of us.  Much as people in the Balkans felt no war was coming while mortars were placed in the hills around their cities we continue to think our economic woes are just the downside of a cycle. There are signs and indications everywhere that we are not headed for a collapse but in one as we speak.  A long collapse which could have times that appear to look like recovery all while we still continuously drop toward the inevitable. Many people think somehow we can “get our fiscal house in order” or simply “cut wasteful spending”, while I am of course for such things at this point it simply won’t matter.  The mathematics alone point to a single reality.  The current economy is a monetary black hole and sadly I fear we are soon to approach the event horizon. Join me today as we discuss… The lesson of how a black hole consumes a planetary body What is a “super heated economy” and why is it happening in Germany If gold isn’t money why are the central banks about to buy 10% of the worlds supply Our nation will add more debt in just 2012 then we did from our founding though the Regan administration Over the next 10 years the interest on our debt will total over 5 trillion dollars 100 US Cities are facing a combined 2 Trillion in debt they will never cover Numbers on the US Debt Clock going down that should scare you Why there is no way out and what that means for us Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper Meet Me at the Self Reliance Expo Get Tickets to the Self Reliance Expo Safecastle Royal – (sponsor of the day) Silver and Gold Shop – (sponsor of the day) Germans spending heats up as inflation looms 2 Trillion of Debt Hangs Over 100 Major Cities US Government Historical Debt 5 Trillion of Interest on 10 Years of US Debt The US Debt Crisis Central Banks to Buy 10% of the World’s Gold Reserves The 100 Million Dollar Penny Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
