Epic Every Day show

Epic Every Day

Summary: We live in a world of overwhelm—not enough time, not enough energy, not enough money... the list of not-enoughness could go on and on. Most of us can only dream of finding margin. Most of us struggle to have time, energy, etc. to really fulfill God's calling in our lives, to be the people He's designed us to be. Without changing how we live, we will never find margin to thrive. Epic Every Day is about transforming each moment from the inside out, creating margin in that moment by using the CSC's. Living in the CSCs is a state of being; being calm, surrendered, centered, connected, and complete. They are an adaptation of Peter Ralston's Tai Chi principles and can also be found all over the Bible. Being in the CSCs can transform each moment into a place of freedom and enough-ness, no matter what your circumstances are.

Self-Control is the Path to Freedom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:25

The right constrictions lead to broader freedom. This is the case with the fruit of the spirit self-control. Through this discipline, God leads us to the good works we would choose to do if we had the mind of God. You don’t grow and learn unless you go through the right experiences.  Taking on the Noise with Self-control & Discipline | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:01

Are you abiding in God, or doing a bunch of spiritual gymnastics trying to look spiritual? Are forcing your spiritual life? God’s invitation into the family of God is not about iron will; it’s about nurturing your spiritual connection and then letting God direct our steps. He is calling you today to abide with him. Use your self-control to make that connection! Brother Lawrence's book: http://a.co/2nqzFIn  Epic Every Day is available on Radio Public, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Sticher and YouTube.  Accepting Self vs Self-Control | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:35

There is a mystery and balance between our God-given personalities and the broken parts of us that God desires to change and grow. Evan and Liz Frerichs discuss this balance and how to strive for spiritual growth without forsaking our hardwiring. We’re still discussing the fruit of the Spirit: Self-Control. Join us!  Self-Control vs Forces of Nature | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:21

Who loves conflict? We all probably dread it to some extent, but when we center our life around avoidance of conflict, trying to soften everything, we become a ghost with no impact on anything. This is the obvious opposite of self-control and today Evan & Liz Frerichs are talking about the importance of assertiveness and self control which is a fruit of the spirit for Christians.  Frantic Energy vs Self-Control | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:01

What is self-control? Is it just beating the flesh into submission? Christians tend to think this is what it means; that we’ve got to attack our fleshly desires head on. Evan & Liz believe it’s more about nurturing the spirit. Christian self-control is about putting aside our will and taking on the Holy Spirit’s will.  Vulnerability Armor: Serpentining | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:48

Brene Brown says Serpentining is what we do to avoid POTENTIAL shame and hurt. We all do this either through procrastination, falsely positive emotions, or distractions from stress of life. We all know life is stressful and full of problems, but after we’ve avoided our problems for a little while, it’s amazing to see that the problems are still there after we finish our evasive actions.  Vulnerability Armor: Over Sharing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:21

There’s a difference between putting your toe over the line & dashing across it. It is possible to use vulnerability as a shield against healthy relationships. You’re the only one who can tell if you’re sharing to foster or repel relationship. Evan & Liz Frerichs continue their conversation about Brene Brown’s Vulnerability Armor from her book Daring Greatly.  Vulnerability Armor: Perfectionism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:53

Trapped in Woulda, shoulda, coulda… Whether you’re trying to be perfect or just not mess up at all, no one can maintain that level of performance! The pressure on yourself is another kind of vulnerability armor we use to shield ourselves from shame & judgment. We need to realize that the standard of perfection is subjective, so even if you always please yourself, others may still deal out judgment.  Vulnerability Armor: Taking the Edge Off | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:42

If there ever was an activity where the all-important key to understanding it is to ‘know thyself,’ it’s this one. Today we’re talking about the things we do to take the edge off. There are a thousand different ways, like TV, candy, alcohol, tobacco, business, gossip, or news just to name a few. Any of these can conceivably be just fine, but we know, if we look hard, if our heart is looking for self-care or an escape. We'll be discussing this book all week.  Vulnerability Armor: Foreboding Joy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:30

What do you think about when you hear the word “vulnerable”? Weakness? All week we’re going to talk about what Brené Brown calls vulnerability armor—the methods we use to avoid vulnerability. Today we’re talking about foreboding joy, i.e. rehearsing tragedy and perpetual disappointment.  Putting it all together | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:59

Worldview Week--Day Five: Evan and Liz talk about how the previous topics in Worldview Week all fit together, giving a coherent method of sorting out truth-wheat from not-truth-chaff.  Because God has prepared good works in advance for us—things that will make us more fulfilled than we could dream—we don’t have time to waste believing lies. We need to throw off the lies that hinder us and run the race. However, sorting out your worldview isn’t something you have to do alone. Join our Facebook group!  Eat the Meat; Spit Out the Bones | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:01

Worldview Week--Day Four: We live in an age of relentless information—coming at us through our phones, the TV, the Internet, from friends and teachers and co-workers. But no one can accept all the information out there and maintain their sanity. Christians have an extra level of responsibility to the truth. Evan and Liz Frerichs encourage their listeners to examine these information systems through the lens of the Bible.  Why Do We Talk About Tai Chi So Much? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:17

Worldview week day three: It’s not that Evan and Liz Frerichs hold Tai Chi in higher esteem than the Bible. But they believe the core principles of Tai Chi—being calm, surrender, centered, connected, & complete--are biblical and the physical principles have helped them learn spiritual disciplines in a tangible way.  Keep Your Baloney Grid Close | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:15

Worldview Week--Day Two: All truth is God’s truth—it’s a phrase Evan and Liz feel describes the world around us. God’s truth is so embedded in the world that evil, try as it might, cannot totally replace it with lies. But it takes a connection to the Holy Spirit and practice to see and understand the truth—this is where a robust baloney grid is critical.  Faith: Not a Blind Leap! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:29

Worldview Week--Day One: Faith is based on the works of God – it’s not a blind leap off of a cliff! Faith isn’t something we’re born with. By God’s design, and by natural processes, growth comes through experiencing challenging things that build up our trust in God. We don’t have to be afraid of information! Join our Facebook group!
