Epic Every Day
Summary: We live in a world of overwhelm—not enough time, not enough energy, not enough money... the list of not-enoughness could go on and on. Most of us can only dream of finding margin. Most of us struggle to have time, energy, etc. to really fulfill God's calling in our lives, to be the people He's designed us to be. Without changing how we live, we will never find margin to thrive. Epic Every Day is about transforming each moment from the inside out, creating margin in that moment by using the CSC's. Living in the CSCs is a state of being; being calm, surrendered, centered, connected, and complete. They are an adaptation of Peter Ralston's Tai Chi principles and can also be found all over the Bible. Being in the CSCs can transform each moment into a place of freedom and enough-ness, no matter what your circumstances are.

Through faith we’re plugged into God, and this is where we get our power. It’s like an electric plug—if there’s something in between the plug and the outlet, no power is getting through. Or it’s like how movement works. Every movement action requires force from the earth—every step forward, every time you lift your groceries, every time you stand up from your desk, etc., etc., is impossible without the earth there to push off of. We discuss the spiritual application of the Tai Chi principle of relaxation. This involves the scary idea of letting go of control, of surrender. There are lots of ways to surrender, but one easy way is to picture the things you struggle to release as being held with an open hand. Calm is not emotional suppression. It’s about having a way out of anxiety when it comes up—because anxiety is part of life. We tend too be thin-skinned. We think getting our feelings hurt is harm—that we’re being damaged. Christians need to distinguish the difference between hurt hand harm. When we approach others without gentleness, the pain we can cause may turn into harm. But God in His grace has the power to heal and redeem hurts as well as harms. Humiliation is really shame, but unfortunately some Christian groups tend to think of it as synonymous with humility. There’s no room in the Church for anyone to have to eat humble pie. Real humility is having a correct view of yourself—not putting self down or getting lost in shame. True humility is a guard against humiliation. Anger is a warning light on the dashboard of our emotional cars. We tend to respond in one of two ways: ignore it, or rage about it. Both are destructive and an attempt to control outcomes. Both feel like they give us power but don’t. Gentleness the true path to deal with anger. Gentleness neither ignores the issue or exaggerates. God in His gentleness is our example. Goodness, in the biblical sense, is often unpopular. It’s constantly pushing for growth and change. It’s a light exposing things about ourselves we don’t like. There is an edge to goodness that is opposed to the high cultural values of the rugged individual and group identity. When we cross these lines in goodness, sparks can fly, but it’s important to push through for the sake of healthy relationship. Goodness in action sometimes feels bad, because it may be rebuke or a correction of some kind; we need to change and God’s goal is to help us change and grow.
