EP 247: Muley Monday with Robby Denning | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:32:09

Hey folks, Today I sit down with Mule Deer legend Robby Denning. Roby has literally and figuratively written the book on hunting big mule deer. When it comes to big bucks and definitely big Idaho bucks Robby is as consistent as they come.  In this episode, we talk a lot about OTC Mule deer tags, from how and where to get them to what states are important. We also chat about finding the big buck in pressured and unpressured area’s as well as how to capitalize on Opportunity Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized 2D targets that look ultra-realistic.  I found these guys because I was looking for a standard 2D elk target for my range and these Solo Skins were exactly what I wanted only way cooler. The Elk Target that I got is huge, it is full size and they use an actual high res image of a bull. One thing I love about this target overshooting a dot is that it is very realistic as far as having to choose a spot on an animal to shoot. After getting the elk skin and loving it the guys from Solo Target sent me their full target system which is a stand for your own standard block target which will work with pretty much any block, couple that with one of the skins and you an awesome life-like target. Not only is a Solo Target cheaper than a full 3D target but I love the added pressure of knowing you have to hit the vitals. For pictures of the targets check out my instagram or theirs @solotargets.  EP 246: Restless Native | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:02:05

Hey everyone, welcome to the podcast. Recently I joined my buddy Brad on his podcast Restless Native. Brad is a great entrepreneur and great interviewer. He also built the goWild App that you have probably heard me talk about. I always enjoy chatting with him, but I wanted to share this episode with you guys because I really enjoyed the conversation around entrepreneurship and dream chasing. There is Also some great stories that have definitely never been told on my podcast. Even though this is episode 246 I don’t usually tell my own stories and don’t talk about myself much. Brad not only pulled some good stories out but pulled some secrets from my sister about some really old hunting stories. That’s a next level interviewer. Anyway hope you guys enjoy and be sure to check out Brad’s podcast Restless Native Brad does a great job and has had some great guests on there like Ben Obrien, Buck Robinson, Stephen Holley and more. Links to Restless Native & GoWild: Restless Native on GoWild Restless Native on iTunes Restless Native on Stitcher Restless Native on Google Play This episode is brought to you by GoWild the ultimate app for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. We Actually just had Brad and John from goWild on the show and had a blast getting to know those guys and getting a behind the scenes look at why they built the app and some of the really cool features within the app. The GoWild app has a ton of cool features but one of the coolest features is the proprietary new scoring system that allows you to enter in your trophies and be scored on much more than just the inches of antler. Their scoring algorithm takes into consideration things like the weapon used, distance of the shot, public or private land. This gives you the ability to compete with your buddies even if he shot his buck with a bow and you shot yours with a rifle. The app also allows you to log time for things like hours scouted, or checking trail cameras. The team over at goWild understands that its more than just how many inches of horn a buck has, it is about the whole experience. Go check out the episode we and then go download the app. Its free and the best part is they do a ton of gear giveaways all the time! This episode brought to you by On X maps.  EP 245: Wapiti Wednesday Big Roosevelt Bulls with Ray Kosydar | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:51:50

Wapiti Wednesday is here! In this episode of Wapiti Wednesday I am taking it back to my roots to talk Oregon Roosevelt’s with my old friend Ray Kosydar. Ray, is a local guy that gets it done year in and year out on solid Roosevelt’s with a gorgeous 7×7 last year. Ray Also share is story of his giant 316” Rosey from a couple years back. I really enjoyed this episode and chatting with Ray as he has a very unique approach to killing big bull in comparison to most western Oregon hunters, and there are some great tips in here about elk behavior from someone who does less calling than most. This episode is brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. Backcountry Fuel box is my newest creation. It is a monthly subscription box full of backcountry meals, snacks, bars, and all kinds of cool high energy options for your next backcountry adventure. I started the box because I wanted a way to try out all the cool new backcountry food options that were on the market, and also so I would always have stuff on hand for my own next adventure. There are just so many cool new options available. The June box had all kinds of great products and new companies that most people have probably never tried, like Four Points Bars, Peak Refuel, and Dark Mountain just to name a few. All in all the June box was packed full with 10 awesome products and discounts codes to all of the companies. Enough to taste test a few items and then hide the rest in my food tote until September. The Box is 33.30 a month but if you enter TRO at check out its only 29.97 per month for a box full of awesome stuff that you are actually going to use. Also a big shout out to all of you who have shared your box on Social Media I am thoroughly humbled dozens of people helping me grow this thing. It really does mean the world to me. This whole Backcountry Fuel project has a lot of cool things coming and you guys have been instrumental in helping me get there. Go check it out give it a try there is literally zero commitment. I’m not trying to scam you into anything I want people to stay signed up year around because the box is awesome not because I tricked you into a 6-month deal. Head over to www.backcountryfuelbox.com and sign up to get you July box. Wapiti Wednesday is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps Calls are hands down my favorite diaphragms. I have tested and tried just about every diaphragm on the market and the amp frame is what I carry. The Amp frame is not only extremely easy to blow, but they are the most consist of calls you can find and extremely durable. As someone, who can blow out a diaphragm in a few days, the first time I used one of the new amp frame calls I was blown away at how long it lasted. I can get a few weeks out of a single Phelps diaphragm. Personally, I like the Amp Grey and the Amp White but if you have no idea what you like order 4-5 of them and see for yourself. Some you’re going to like for locating and some you’ll like for sexy cow sounds but I’d be willing to bet you will be able to use all of them and you’ll have some backups. A couple people have asked me if the bat bugle is necessary, for me 100% I am naked without a bat. The Phelps bat just gives me so much more reach with my bugle as far as being louder and carrying farther into a canyon. If if you only want to slip in on a heard and not say a word with a good locate bugle you can get that bull to give up his location from much farther away. Welcome to the Muley Monday segment of The Rich Outdoors. We have been on a streak of interviews with under the radar Idaho killers and today’s show is right in line with that Streak. Josh Cooper and his crew have definitely got the mountains of Idaho dialed. In this episode, we talk a lot about various hunting dates throughout the Idaho general rifle season and things Josh looks for in a good October hunting area. Josh has found a lot of success understanding transition areas which on paper can be easy to explain but in practice frustrating to say the least. We chat about how to located good transition area, how to hunt them and keys to a good plan B. If you hunt Mule deer in October this is a podcast you’ll want to add to the save list.  EP 243: How to Train Your Dog To Be a Great Hunting Asset with Jeremy Moore | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:32

I recently got a new puppy. Now as someone who has had nothing but labs and thought I would never have anything but labs I ended up down a whole new road and with a dog bread I had never heard of before. After a lot of back and forth and thinking about what I wanted in a dog, and maybe just a wild hair for something new, I settled on a Catahoula. I really wanted a loyal dog that would be alert in Grizzly country. A dog that would be by my side and warn me of a bear I may not see. A bonus if it picks up sheds and if it can track a wounded animal, great. Double bonus if it is big enough to pack a little weight. The downside to Catahoula’s is That they can be hard to train and can be stubborn. Like I’ve said, I’ve had some great labs and have trained the two I’ve had to be stand out dogs. With that in mind I figured, why not try to calm a crazy Catahoula cattle dog. To help me get on the right track I reached out to Jeremy Moore of Dog Bone Hunter. Jeremy is an awesome dog trainer that specializes in shed dogs and game recovery. We had a great talk on getting my pup started in the right direction as well as principals to think about when training your hunting companion. For more info be sure to check out Jeremy’s training videos and podcast as this 2-hour podcast barely scratches the surface of the topic. This episode brought to you by On X maps.  EP 242: Wapiti Wednesday with Charlie Smith | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:18

This week’s Wapiti Wednesday I am joined by Charlie Smith of Phelps Game Calls. Charlie is Another one of those guys that fly’s under the radar but is more than qualified to talk elk calling and chasing big bulls. You just about have to pry it out of him but once I get Charlie talking there is a ton of knowledge to pull from. Charlie is a hell of a good caller and spends most of his time playing ultra-aggressive and challenging bulls to a fight.  Once you get Charlie to open up he is pretty darn funny and we always have a great time. Also, Check out the Elkoholics video that we did, Charlie might have the funniest interview in the video. This episode brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. I know what a lot of you are thinking. I’m not really a subscription box kind of person, but hear me out. This is the one subscription box you need. Backcountry Fuel Box is a monthly box of backcountry meals, snacks, bars, and all kinds of food for your next adventure. Phelps game calls are consistent which is one thing I drive me nuts about other calls. If you haven’t been able to use a diaphragm call before, first off you need to learn, and second buy yourself a few amp frames to learn on these are far and away the easiest calls to learn on. I don’t care what anyone says being able to call will make you a better hunter. doesn’t mean you gotta call all the time, but having the ability can mean the difference in a week-long hiking trip and eating elk steaks all winter.  EP 241: Muley Monday with Travis Roundy @deerbedead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:51

Muley Monday has been on a roll this year, and this episode is right up there with my favorites so far. I finally got the chance to chat with Travis Roundy aka Deer-be-dead and the conversation definitely did not disappoint. Travis has forgotten more than I will ever know and has a skill for harvesting absolute giants. Travis is on a whole other level when it comes to big bucks and shares some true secrets to how he finds so much success. This podcast single-handedly got me excited for mule deer season as Travis has so many great stories to tell and tells them so damn well. We also talk about the lost art of big buck tracking and how he used tracking to track down a 32″ wide buck after his daughter, unfortunately, missed on her first shot. If you like Big bucks this is a MUST LISTEN to podcast. For those Elkoholics like me, let me warn you this podcast may just make you want to find a big ol’ Muley buck in a snowstorm.  EP 239: Wapiti Wednesday with Shawn Melland | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:24

Wapiti Wednesday is here! This week I am joined by fellow Bozemanite and elk fanatic Shawn Melland. Shawn is a beast and takes his elk hunting to a whole new level. As a former pro athlete, Shawn knows what it takes to operate at the next level and knows what kind of work goes into being successful. If his first 6 years of elk hunting he is averaging a 377″ bull killing 5 bulls all well over the 350″ mark, and all DIY public land. Shawn doesn’t even own a bugle and has never actually called in a bull at all, this fact alone intrigues me and want to dive into elk tactics that are completely outside of my wheelhouse. Shawn is amazing at thinking outside of the box, and even when I think that I am thinking outside the box Shawn will push me to think even farther and challenges most assumptions in elk hunting. If you like big bulls than you need to listen to this podcast! This episode brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps game calls are consistent which is one thing I drive me nuts about other calls.  EP 238: Muley Monday with Dioni Amuchastegui | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:49

When it comes to under the radar big buck killers Dioni Amuchastegui is one of the top guys out there. Dioni puts in the work and it pays off in a big way year after year. Last year on Muley Monday Dioni joined me to share some of the ways he thinks outside the box and finds great bucks in areas that most people would never look. After that show, in a general Idaho buck area, he was able to turn up a spectacular buck during the summer and watch him all the way to opening day. There aren’t a lot of guys that are able to put in the amount of time scouting that Dioni can but I think many of the insights that come from spending 20+ days watching a particular buck and his patterns are invaluable to the rest of us who get limited time. In this episode we talk a lot about scouting, covering ground, and why Dioni makes the decisions that he does. There is so much information about finding big bucks in this episode and just so much to learn from those who are able to spend far more hours learning in the field every weekend. This episode of Muley Monday is going to make you want to scout more this summer, I can promise you that! EP 237: Mental Toughness and Becoming MTN Tough | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:45

Today I am joined by Dustin Diefenderfer of right here in Bozeman Montana. Born and raised in Montana Dustin is a beast on the mountain and loves to push the limits. I met Dustin through the MTN Tough Course here in Bozeman and got the chance to test it out over the last couple months. You have probably heard the ads for this course on the podcast and Dustin is the man behind the scene for the MTN Tough program. In this episode, Dustin and I dive into the mental toughness aspect of being a backcountry hunter. Not only is this one of my favorite pieces of the puzzle but also what I feel is the difference between being good and being great. We also dive into how hunting has such a much larger impact on making you a better human than is often talked about. Dustin is one of those guys who pushes the group and is always leading both mentally and physically. I really love this episode and believe this is one of the most underrated aspects to any backcountry hunt. For over a year, behind the scenes MTNTOUGH has been building an online training program specifically designed for Backcountry Hunters They have assembled an impressive team for this task, including a former Navy Seal, a former Army Colonel who instructed physical education at Westpoint, and couple trainers with decades of experience. I tested the program here in Bozeman, with Dustin Diefenderfer, the founder of MTN TOUGH and let me tell you this program will kick your butt. Over the years I have done a ton of various work out programs. with the last couple years spending most of my time running and using kettle-bells  I was in pretty good shape when I started this workout and quickly realized this program is going to crush muscles I forgot I had.  Make sure and go to mtntough.com to get on the waiting list to be one of the first to get access to the program in June. Oh, and MTN TOUGH is giving away 3 LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS to 3 winners who have their name on the waiting list. This episode brought to you by On X maps.  EP 236: Wapiti Wednesday with Verlyn Savage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:26

Welcome to Wapiti Wednesday. Today’s episode is a gold mine. Verlyn Savage is one of those guys that just absolutely gets it done every year. He has harvest 6 points in both Idaho and Oregon for nearly 20 years straight now. That’s right not only does he get a bull every year but he gets two bulls every year. We dive into everything from elk behavior, to calling, to how to hunt as a team. Verlyn is one hell of a guy that is not afraid to get after it even in his 50’s. Verlyn and his hunting partner have quite the system and operate very well together. A couple years back they even managed to find and kill an all elusive 400” public land bull. The kind of bull that every DIY elk hunters dreams are made of. Just listening to the story will get you fired up and ready to hit the mountain to scout. I could talk elk hunting and listen to him tell elk hunting stories for hours. Hope you guys enjoy. Happy Wapiti Wednesday! This episode brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps game calls are consistent which is one thing I drive me nuts about other calls. Jason Phelps the owner is an amazing elk caller for one, but more importantly he a brilliant engineer, and obsessive about quality, which makes his calls consistent and super high quality. I prefer the ladder. Phelps Game Calls are finally in stock again, but you better order fast because last year they sold out of a lot of reeds before the season. Get free shipping on your order with the code TRO. Go get you a pile of reeds and start practicing now! This episode brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. I know what a lot of you are thinking.  EP 235: Muley Monday with Hjalmar Hedman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:03

Muley Monday is back! For all of you Muley Freaks who love hearing stories of big muley bucks The Rich Muley Monday segment is right up your alley. To kick off Muley Monday this year I am joined by my buddy Hjalmar Hedman who is originally from Sweden. Hjalmar didn’t really grow up hunting but was a board sports fanatic. When he finally picked up archery and then hunting he became a fanatic and emerged himself if everything he could get his hands on. With zero guidance when getting into hunting, Hjalmar has a pretty epic first hunt story. Following the exact guidance of a book published in 1883, Theodore VanDyke The Still Hunter.  Hjalmar was still hunting the hills outside of L.A. and managed to harvest a buck. With early success, Hjalmar continued to learn and expand his knowledge. In this episode, we dive into his early success but we also talk about his learning curve and not having any hunting mentor to learn from. We also cover advice to new hunters and tactics he’s developed over the years. I am excited to start talking about big bucks again and glad Hjalmar could be the first episode. Hope you guys enjoy this episode with Hjalmar Hedman. This episode brought to you by iSocialboost.  iSocialboost is an Instagram growth tool that can help you grow your tribe in an organic way.  EP 234: Wayne Carlton part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:38

Welcome to part two of sitting on the back porch with Wayne Carlton. If you missed part one of the podcast I recommend you go back and give it a listen. For those who do not know, I grew watching Wayne Carlton hunting videos so when I got the chance to head down on a turkey hunt with Wayne I jumped at the opportunity. I have to say it is surreal to get the opportunity to follow someone you hold so highly. In part one we talk about our turkey hunt together and Wayne’s early years in transitioning from turkey hunting to elk hunting. We talk about the years of calling elk and Wayne shares stories from way back in the day. We also dive into Wayne’s long desire to be a mule man and some hilarious stories of mules along the way. In Part two Wayne shares the story of his big 420 Bull, and his take on hunting big bulls after a lifetime of hunting some of the biggest around. This leads to a bunch of hunting stories from years past and and a lot of laughs about the crazy hunts. We discuss Wayne and Marc bringing back the family business after years of stagnant constraints of being tied up, and what is new and exciting with the Native by Carlton brand.  My favorite part of this entire podcast is the story about Wayne jumping of the aircraft carrier to settle a poker debt, but I won’t ruin the story for you. I hope you guys enjoy this episode and be sure to leave a review on iTunes to win a free diaphragm form Native by Carlton. This episode is brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. Backcountry Fuel Box started as a way for me to scratch my own itch. One day I saw something from Off Grid Food and I thought O I wanna try that, but honestly, I just don’t have time to order every little product that comes out to try it. That and I am always burning through the snack box which is empty when I wanna bomb up the mountain. Enter the Idea to have a subscription box that sends out cool new products every month, saving both time, money on things I want or didn’t even know existed. Take our May Box Most people have probably never heard of brands like FishSki Provisions who make some killer chile Mac, or Big Sur Bars, Or Skout Backcountry, but it is also a great way to stock up on your favorites like Wilderness Athlete Hydrate and Recover Packets, or those tasty Off Grid Predator Fuel.
