EP 292: Wapiti Wednesday with Todd Orr | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:53

Do you like tracking animals? This episode of Wapiti Wednesday is fully dedicated to tracking big bulls in the snow. Todd Orr, who is notoriously known for surviving his double grizzly bear is actually an amazing elk hunter. Todd has taken 28 bulls over the years with a pistol. An incredibly tough feat, that he has accomplished via mastering the art of tracking bulls down in the snow to a very close range. This podcast makes me wish I had an extra elk tag for the late season still. For those who are a bit timid about grizzly bears however you probably don’t want to listen to this episode because Todd also shares the vivid bone crushing story of getting attacked by a momma grizzly twice and surviving. This story was really good for me to hear as I sometimes become too complacent about being in bear country and this serves as a great reminder that bad thing do happen to even guys who are prepared and know what to do. Check Out Todd’s Knife Company, Skyblade Knives Todays Wapiti Wednesday is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps game calls are the best on the market in my opinion. This year I used the same reed all season, one reed for the whole month of September. I dare you to try that with any other diaphragm out there. Also, the new “un-RIVAL-ed Bugle Tube” Bugle tube is amazing. I am blown away out how much volume that miniature bat has for such a small size. Love how easy it is store and pack. It also doesn’t bang around nearly as much going through the brush. Also, I know most of you know Phelps calls as your go-to elk calling company but they also make some great predator and waterfowl calls as well. Just like their elk calls the quality and attention to detail is amazing. Check them out at PhelpsGameCalls.com and get free shipping on your order with code TRO. Today’s episode is brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. The monthly subscription that brings you all kinds of awesome snacks, bars, jerky’s, dehydrated meals and fuel for your next adventure.  EP 291: Muley Monday with Scott Thompson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:12

Welcome to Muley Monday of The Rich Outdoors. Today we have one of the most under the radar killers out there. I think we say that a lot but I am pumped to chat with Scott because, in my opinion, Scott is one of the most Dynamic Mule deer hunters in the woods. It doesn’t seem to matter what weapon, what terrain, or what time of year Scott pulls buck after buck off the mountain or flats. In this episode Scott shares some great hunting stories and what separates him from the average hunter. Like most under the radar guys, Scott is almost too humble to tell you but we pull out some really good tips. I know I pulled a few things I hadn’t thought of out of the conversation. This was a great podcast for me as I think it re-affirms a few things that I needed fresh in the memory bank as I head off to find a buck at the tail of a hard storm. Hey guys and gals, this is your final warning. I don’t want to hear any whining or complaining that you missed this when it is gone. This is your final opportunity to get try out goHUNT.com Insider for free. The free trial almost over, so if you want to see what everyone is raving about go check it out right now. With Solo Targets, you can turn any block target into a realistic hunting scenario for far cheaper than a 3D target. Honestly, I like the realism of the 2D targets overshooting a 3d Target. I also really like that all of the targets are actual life size target which really gives you a feel for looking at that animal at different yardages. Solo Targets offers a realistic target in everything from predators to bighorn sheep and my favorite real-life size elk.  EP 290: 2018 Montana Hunt - Final Episode | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:55:48

Well, the episode you have all been waiting for is finally here. First off, I want to thank all of you for following along on this little experiment of a new style of podcast. I think obviously we have a few kinks to work out and the audio will be much better in the future but it sounds like most of you really dig the play by play and random shenanigans that is my solo Montana hunt. Please leave a review on iTunes and tell me what you think and also how we could improve on this concept. This was a long hunt and honestly, I was starting to wonder how this podcast was going to turn out. Originally I thought the entire hunt might make up 1 60-90 minute episode but ended up being 4 60-90 minute episodes. Hope you guys enjoyed following along this archery season and again, please let me know if you would listen to more like this. This podcast is brought to you by GoWild. GoWild is the hottest new app for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Really love what those guys are doing over there and they just have so much going on, they are growing so fast, really cool to see. One of the really cool features about GoWild is that you can log time for being in the outdoors and doing outdoor activities. Whether you are shooting your bow, checking trail cameras, or sitting in the stand, log your time on your GoWild account and earn points. In fact, you can Log time listening to the podcast. Over just the last couple months you guys have logged 68,914 minutes of listening to The Rich Outdoors. That is insane! This month GoWild is doing a special giving-away for logging time listening to The Rich Outdoors.  They are giving away a brand new fully set up bow. The bow is an Obsession Turmoil RZ which was selected as the 2017 Field & Stream Gear of the year for mid-priced bows. This thing is completely set up with trophy taker products all you need is a D loop put on. In order to be entered to win the Obsession Bow all you need to do is log time listening to The Rich Outdoors on the GoWilld app. if you are already a GoWild user just go where you would normally make a post, hit the plus sign and hit Log. It is really easy and if you aren’t a GoWilduser you better download the app ASAP and log some time listening to the podcast so you can win a brand new Obsession bow This episode is brought to you by On X maps. On X is such an awesome tool and 100% a must have. There are so many great features on the onX maps app. First off the OnX Maps works without service. Let me say that again you do not need service to have badass maps right on your phone and the GPS works with no service or in airplane mode. I think so many people are confused by that. Its magic folks it just works. One of the cool ways I have been using my OnX maps this season is that every time I come across a heavy elk trail or cattle trail, I turn on my “Tracker” which basically tracks wherever I go. Then I just follow that trail on my way out and hit save. this records various trails all over the mountain that I can have for later. Now, say next year I get into a screaming bull on that same hillside I can look at my onX and see hey there’s a trail that runs right across this face over to him. It seems like every year I would think to myself, “I know there is a trail around here somewhere” now I have all of that info saved to my phone. Use the TRO promo code when you sign up or even just renew your account and get 20% off. www.onXmaps.com or at your favorite app store. This year I launched Backcountry Fuel Box, a monthly subscription box for backcountry meals, bars, snacks, guess, and all kinds of great new products you have probably never heard of.  EP 288: Muley Monday with Joey Pyburn | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:12

Welcome to Muley Monday! Today I am joined by a good buddy and total backcountry badass. Joey Pyburn has been on the podcast before to chat about elk hunting which he is no stranger to but I think if Joey had to pick his heart lies in chasing big bucks. As a hunter you grew up in a less than well known Mule Deer state Joey has learned to grind it out and find big bucks where most would think didn’t even exist. With a lifetime of experience under his belt, Joey has a ton to bring to the table as well as some great stories. Last year Joey and his hunting partner Ryan Lampers trekked into the unknown of the Idaho Wilderness to pull out two giant bucks. Listening to this story really makes me want to step it up and push a little harder this year and I hope it inspires you as well. Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized ultra-realistic 2D targets. I have been obsessed with the solo targets and love the realism of having to pick a spot on an animal and not just shoot a spot. With Solo Targets you can turn any block target into a realistic hunting scenario for far cheaper than a 3D target. Honestly, I like the realism of the 2D targets overshooting a 3d Target. I also really like that all of the targets are actual life size target which really gives you a feel for looking at that animal at different yardages. I just got the new mule deer buck target and that thing is badass. The target alone will give you buck fever. We set it up in the field with just a small block target behind it which is such a realistic added pressure, if you don’t hit the vitals that arrow is gone. Just that added bit of pressure makes you really hone in on your target. head over to solotargets.com and use The Rich Outdoors code TRO to save 20% off your badass target system.  EP 285: 2018 Montana Elk Recap - Day 1-3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:16

Welcome to The Rich Outdoors podcast. Today I have a bit of a new format for the show. A lot of you know I am not a big fan of being followed around by a cameraman, in fact, I relish my solo elk hunts too much to add that kind of distraction. However, I do enjoy the idea of documenting my journey. Whether for the world or just for myself I wanted to hit record and just document my journey on a true solo backcountry adventure. This year I set out to spend two weeks on a solo horseback hunt and I thought it may be worth recording the adventure, for nothing else it may just be a good judge of how many days it takes before I completely lose it. This podcast is also a test in a way as I would love to refine the process and do some cool adventure podcast where you follow along on adventures. For the record, future podcasts of this format will be much more processed and refined. This is kind of a pilot that we are kicking out to judge interest. Also, it is September and we just don’t want to spend that kind of time in the editing room when we could be out chasing bulls! Do me a solid and let me know what you think of this podcast. Seriously though, I say that a lot but this time I really would like your feedback. This episode is brought to you by GoWild the ultimate app for hunting, fishing and the outdoors.  EP 283: Muley Monday with Braxton Hamilton | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:24

Welcome to Muley Monday of The Rich Outdoors. Today I am joined by a die-hard Wyoming Mule Deer Hunter who just laid down a true high country giant. Braxton Hamilton (@brax_hamilton) has hunted the Wyoming high country pretty much his entire life and though admittedly still learning the ropes has turned up his fair share of big bucks. This year Braxton was able to harvest a beautiful 224″ buck with his bow, a buck that he actually passed up last year miss judging just how big this old buck was. I really enjoy chatting with guys that are as passionate about hunting as Braxton is and appreciate his dedication. There are definitely some subtle tips in here that should make the difference between having a successful season and going home with a big batch of tag soup.  Also, check out Braxton’s new company @wyld_company they are doing a cool big buck competition.  EP 282: Fall Black Bear Hunting with Clay Newcomb | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:56

I have had a surprised at how often I get hit up about doing a fall bear hunting podcast. I do not know if it is because bear hunting is becoming more popular or if people are looking for more opportunities to hunt what they have available. Either way, it was a great opportunity to chat about something other than elk and deer which seems to encompass my world this time of year. Clay Newcomb is the owner and head of Bear Hunting Magazine. Interestingly, Clay is from the south, which is not where I would have guessed such an avid bear hunter would emerge. I had a great time chatting with Clay and it is easy to tell he is passionate about bear hunting. In this episode, we dive into all kinds of hunting stories and how to’s on hunting bears, and much of it a lot of it boils down to locating and understanding the primary food sources which Clay has some great insights on. Good luck to all of you looking to fill the freezer on a big black bear this fall. This episode is brought to you by GoWild the ultimate app for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. We Actually just had Brad and John from goWild on the show and had a blast getting to know those guys and getting a behind the scenes look at why they built the app and some of the really cool features within the app. The GoWild app has a ton of cool features but one of the coolest features is the proprietary new scoring system that allows you to enter in your trophies and be scored on much more than just the inches of antler. Their scoring algorithm takes into consideration things like the weapon used, distance of the shot, public or private land. This gives you the ability to compete with your buddies even if he shot his buck with a bow and you shot yours with a rifle. The app also allows you to log time for things like hours scouted, or checking trail cameras. The team over at goWild understands that it’s more than just how many inches of horn a buck has, it is about the whole experience. Go check out the episode we and then go download the app. Its free and the best part is they do a ton of gear giveaways all the time! Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized ultra-realistic 2D targets. I have been obsessed with the solo targets and love the realism of having to pick a spot on an animal and not just shoot a spot. Head over to solotargets.com and use the Rich Outdoors promo code TRO to save 20% off your badass target system. Welcome to Muley Monday of The Rich Outdoors. Steve Alderman might be one of my favorite guys to chat about Mule Deer with. Sometimes he can be hard to get the secret recipe from but inevitably every time we podcast I pull some really great information from our conversation. Steve is not someone you see much on social media but Steve has a knack for finding and harvesting old mature bruins. Steve also does most of his hunting with a muzzleloader and we dive into some high-level muzzleloader geek speak in this episode. muzzleloader hunting can be extremely frustrating at times and I think a lot of people fail to put in the practice that is necessary to be effective with the weapon. In this episode, we not only talk about big bucks but Steve breaks down his muzzleloader setups and walks through his preparation for various guns.  EP 279: Modern Huntsman with Tyler Sharp & Charles Post | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:16

Welcome to episode number 279 of the podcast. Today I am joined by my good friend and neighbor Charles Post as well his colleague Tyler Sharp, the creative director for Modern Huntsman. Modern Huntsman is a new take on a hunting magazine is you can even call it that, it is more like a bi-annual book. On the home page of the site, it reads “Modern Huntsman exists to be a place where both hunters and non-hunters can come together on the topics that unite us, rather than bickering over the differences that have polarized us.” This is big, and I think the very important for the big picture. In this episode, we discuss many topics that are political hotbeds so to speak. Although the three of us have very different backgrounds and were introduced to hunting in different ways, we can have an honest and open conversation and still respect each other’s views. This is Modern Huntsman in a nutshell. An open dialog that is restoring the perception of hunting. We had a great conversation on a wide range of topics from grizzlies to yard deer. I always love chatting with Charles and had a great time getting to know Tyler as well. Hope you guys enjoy this great conversation with Tyler and Charles. Also, do me a favor and check out Modern Huntsman, sign up to get your copy of the upcoming issue that is coming out in October. Tyler is also giving you $5 off a single issue or subscription with the Promo Code: TRO. Just head over to ModernHuntsman.co or click this link and see what they’re all about!  EP 278: Wapiti Wednesday with Jay Scott | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:02

Welcome to Wapiti Wednesday with Jay Scott. Jay Scott is a fellow podcast host and diehard elk fanatic like me. I love talking to Jay about Elk and elk hunting. Jay has a ton of experience guiding for true giant elk in his home state of Arizona. I love talking to Jay because I learn something new every time. Arizona is just such a different terrain that many of the tactics they have developed are much different than what I have experience with. I will say, in this episode, Jay talks about moving on moving elk that I think is a crucial skill to learn for ANYONE. Do not overlook this podcast if you think Arizona hunting is not applicable to what you do. Jay and I chat about the keys to moving through elk and this might be one of the single most important skills to have as an elk hunter. Whether you are calling bulls in coastal Oregon or dogging a herd through the breaks of eastern Montana this is invaluable info. We also talk about field judging bulls and Jay shares some tips on how he goes about field judging bulls on the hoof. Today’s Podcast brought to you by Elk 101’s University of Elk Hunting.
