EP 277: Muley Monday with Devin Leonard | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:43

Welcome to Muley Monday! Today I am joined by Devin Leonard who has shot more 200 inch bucks than I have ever seen. This podcast turned out Awesome! Devin did a great job of really explaining how he thinks about big bucks and really goes into what it takes to find and harvest giant bucks. Devin Might be the luckiest guy I know when it comes to drawing big tags. After winning a great elk tag at the Western Hunt Expo, he ended up pulling a Statewide deer tag for Nevada this year. We talk about the struggles of having an entire state to hunt though I don’t think anyone feels bad for Devin. Devin also tells the story of a buck named “Radic” that he spent of 60 days hunting before getting a chance to release an arrow. The Radic buck is a huge accomplishment and really a testament to hard work and determination. Devon is also the guy behind iSocial boost. You have probably heard ads for iSocial Boost on Muley Monday podcasts before. Well, Devin is the guy behind that making it all happen. If you haven’t heard of it, iSocialboost is an Instagram growth tool that can help you grow your tribe in an organic way.  EP 276: Arrow Ballistics with David Hand | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:31

Today I am joined by David Hand of Ballistic Arrow Tech and Slash Arrows to chat about arrows and arrow ballistics. David is a Mechanical engineer with over 20 years of bowhunting and holds several patents on arrows used for hunting. David underwent a 5-year study of the ballistics of modern-day high-speed hunting arrows, that included a study at Rice University. In this episode, we talk about arrow ballistics and some of the misnomers in regards to common thoughts behind hunting arrows and arrow flight. We also talk about some of Davids inventions and the process behind the creations. Check out SLASH® INsetBlade® Arrows  This episode is brought to you by GoWild the ultimate app for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. We Actually just had Brad and John from goWild on the show and had a blast getting to know those guys and getting a behind the scenes look at why they built the app and some of the really cool features within the app. The GoWild app has a ton of cool features but one of the coolest features is the proprietary new scoring system that allows you to enter in your trophies and be scored on much more than just the inches of antler. Their scoring algorithm takes into consideration things like the weapon used, distance of the shot, public or private land. This gives you the ability to compete with your buddies even if he shot his buck with a bow and you shot yours with a rifle. The app also allows you to log time for things like hours scouted, or checking trail cameras. The team over at goWild understands that it’s more than just how many inches of horn a buck has, it is about the whole experience. Go check out the episode we and then go download the app. Its free and the best part is they do a ton of gear giveaways all the time! Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized ultra-realistic 2D targets. I have been obsessed with the solo targets and love the realism of having to pick a spot on an animal and not just shoot a spot. With Solo Targets, you can turn any block target into a realistic hunting scenario for far cheaper than a 3D target. Honestly, I like the realism of the 2D targets overshooting a 3d Target. I also really like that all of the targets are actual life size target which really gives you a feel for looking at that animal at different yardages. I just got the new mule deer buck target and that thing is badass. The target alone will give you buck fever. We set it up in the field with just a small block target behind it which is such a realistic added pressure, if you don’t hit the vitals that arrow is gone. Just that added bit of pressure makes you really hone in on your target. head over to solotargets.com and use The Rich Outdoors code TRO to save 20% off your badass target system. Hang on to your headphones girls and boys, this podcast is going to blow your mind! We had been kicking around this idea to put together the best elk hunting parts from every podcast we have done in the last 274 episodes on elk hunting. This was a monumental task and I can’t thank everyone who helped enough, without the help of the listeners who stepped up and helped us go through literally hundreds of hours on content to pull out the extra special nuggets of wisdom. Also the big round of applause to John the producer for bringing it all together.  EP 274: Muley Monday with Tony Trietch | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:52

Welcome to Muley Monday, today I am joined by a good friend and stud of an archery hunter. Tony Trietch is a very analytical hunter who has as much drive for hunting as anyone I have ever met. Tony sets out on the road heading west each fall not to return for multiple months. I think the enormity of this gets overlooked until you stop and truly think about the logistics that are involved in such an endeavor. In order to be on the road for multiple hunts, there has to be a ton of planning and preparation that goes into gear and equipment. In this episode, we dive into Tony’s system for gear and preparation but we also talk about some of his recent Mule deer hunts as well as his decision to turn back his Nevada tag after a week of hard scouting. Since recording Tony connected on an awesome buck in Colorado that he found the day we recorded this episode so big congrats to him on that. This year I launched Backcountry Fuel Box, a monthly subscription box for backcountry meals, bars, snacks, gues, and all kinds of great new products you have probably never heard of.  EP 273: The Walt and Dave Show Episode 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:54:25

Welcome to the podcast! Today is episode 273 and also episode 2 of The Walt and Dave Show. I know that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but if you remember from last year I did a podcast with Walt and Dave which turned out to be a pretty big hit which I was really glad about. For a little context, Walt and Dave are two old-timers, from the area I grew up in and were really some of the first archers of that area. For the record, I am using the term “old timers” as a term of endearment toward my elders. I have sat and listened to many a story from these guys and hope you guys enjoy it as well. In this particular episode of the Walt and Dave show, we are joined by David Brinker Jr. You have probably heard David on other podcasts as he has been in the hunting industry for quite some time. Sidebar, if you’ve been following Corey Jacobsen’s hunt in Oregon right now, you probably saw that poor Brinker took a Valkarie Broadhead to the leg. I have no idea how you pulled that off buddy but thank god it wasn’t worse and hurry up and get healed up so you can get back out there. I was really glad to have Brinker Jr. on the show with us as he is obviously able to pull some great info from his old man. Good Luck to everyone in Oregon and good luck to the elk 101 crew tromping around in some of my old stomping grounds pretty cool to see. This weekend is opener here in Montana, I still have a few things to wrap up but hoping to load up the horses and pack in for a couple weeks of solo horseback hunting starting the 4th. Really excited for that adventure as a whole. Also, I am taking a mic along with me and will be trying to record some of the adventures along the way to share with you guys. If nothing else it might make for a good documentary on how long it takes Cody to go crazy alone in the backcountry. Anyway, enjoy this episode with Walt and Dave, and Dave. Brinker, get well soon, good luck to everyone this season. We do have plenty of podcasts to keep you entertained while I am hunting so tune in but I will be back with a season update so you all can follow along a bit this year with all of my adventures. Quick sidebar, we way over ordered on the Backcountry fuel boxes in August so we have a ton of boxes left over.  EP 272: WW - Roosevelt Elk with Derek Carlton | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:16

Welcome to the podcast. I get a lot of requests for Roosevelt elk podcasts and today we have just that. Oregon archery season is underway, and I don’t know how many folks will be listening, but maybe this will get you fired up for your weekend adventure. Today I am joined by Derek Carlton, who eats, sleeps, and breathes NW hunting. In fact, I need to say congrats to Derek for already punching his buck tag on a dandy 4 point blacktail. I really enjoyed this episode as it takes me back to my roots to hear stories from Derek talking about chasing big old Rosies. Like I said Derek gets it done year after year and it is easy to tell that he puts a serious amount of time into his craft and has a great understanding for his quarry. Today on Muley Monday we have Brian Barney. He’s been on a couple of times for spring bear episodes, but it’s safe to say this guy is a mule deer fanatic who consistently harvests big bucks year after year. In this episode we cover stalking techniques, different types of terrain where you can find bucks, whether it’s deep in the Colorado alpine basins or in Nevada’s desert high country. As we recorded this, Brian was about to head off to Nevada where he already tagged out on a great desert mule deer. With some states having kicked off their early archery seasons and other’s getting going in the next week or so, this episode is perfect to get you stoked for your upcoming mule deer hunts.  EP 265: Muley Monday with South Cox | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:27:52

What an Awesome Muley Monday we have for you this week. South Cox is someone I have looked up to for years, and honestly the first time I ever interviewed him I was as nervous and excited as if I were stalking a 200 inch buck. Over the last couple of years, I have gotten to know South pretty well, which made jumping on the podcast with him this time a much better podcast. South a legend in when it comes to bowhunting and I love his mindset both on the mountain and off. South recently launched a new video that he has been working on the last couple of years and it turned out amazing! In this episode, we dive into all kinds of high country stalking questions and dilemmas that arise throughout a hunt. We also talk about understanding when to make a stalk, and when not to stalk, which can be that difference between making it happen and a long walk out for nothing. This episode is packed full of little golden nuggets of information throughout. I can’t thank South enough for sharing his knowledge as well as putting out such great content for all of us to drool over.  Check Out South’s Films: Stalker Stickbow Films South’s Podcast: The Western Bowhunter Podcast South’s Website: Stalker Stickbows This year I launched Backcountry Fuel Box, a monthly subscription box for backcountry meals, bars, snacks, gues, and all kinds of great new products you have probably never heard of. EP 264: Aussie Hunter Craig Hailes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:24

Craig Hailes and I have been pretty good buddies for a while now, we connected through the podcast and hit it off quite well from the beginning. Craig is a total elkoholic and considering he resides in Australia, that’s a pretty strange passion to have. Craig is a hell of a hunter and a hell of a guy who has been on a ton of really cool hunts all over the world. In this episode, we chat about all kinds of random stuff but we definitely talk about his obsession for elk and how hunting down under is different from in the states. Craig also was lucky enough to hunt Ibex in New Mexico last year and we talk a bit about that hunt as it can be a brutal hunt and leave all but humbled. Also, I have a Backcountry Fuel Box Giveaway Challenge for all you boys and girls. I saw a pic the other day of someone that still had nearly every product from each previous month’s Backcountry Fuel Box. So here is the challenge: If anyone has been able to save every product from each box and hasn’t eaten anything yet, post a picture of all your boxes and I will give you this months box for FREE. You have to use #backcountryfuelbox so I can find it though. I am skeptical that anyone still has a full 5 months worth, so even if you don’t have 100% of everything, but you are close, just post it anyway because you still have a chance to win. Today’s episode is brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. The monthly subscription that brings you all kinds of awesome snacks, bars, jerky’s, dehydrated meals and fuel for your next adventure.  EP 263: WW Corey Jacobsen the Professor | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:28:18

In this episode, we confirm that Corey is not actually a robot. There has been some discussion on previous episodes and strong cases were made that Corey Jacobsen might actually be an elk killing robot as clearly is calling, shooting and hunting skills are a little to perfect and have raised concerns in the community. In this episode, I wanted to dive into some scenario-based situations and really see how Corey thinks about certain situations. We had some great conversations around various setups and really, what to do when plans don’t go your way and elk don’t cooperate with the plan. Today’s Podcast brought to you by Elk 101’s University of Elk Hunting. The University of Elk Hunting is the most in-depth course on elk hunting you can find and it is all online.
