EP 262: Muley Monday with Brady Miller | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:38

Welcome to Muley Monday. This week I catch up with my good buddy Brady Miller and chat about our weekend’s scouting trips. We both got our butts kicked and were fooled by the google earth once again! We chatted about how to handle limited scouting time, going back to the drawing board this late in the game and strategies for plan B. Brady has a number of tags this season and like many of us doesn’t have the time to scout them all. We also dive into Brady’s updated gear list and upgrades he is making to this years game plan. Brady is the king of lightweight and I am always blown away at how light he gets down to every year. Brady is running a stoveless meal set up again and we talk about the pro’s and con’s of no hot meals all week. This year I launched Backcountry Fuel Box, a monthly subscription box for backcountry meals, bars, snacks, gues, and all kinds of great new products you have probably never heard of. It is a killer way to test out new options, or just save money by stashing each box for season. Check it out at backcountryfuelbox.com and save 10% with code TRO. Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized ultra-realistic 2D targets. I have been obsessed with the solo targets and love the realism of having to pick a spot on an animal and not just shoot a spot. With Solo Targets, you can turn any block target into a realistic hunting scenario for far cheaper than a 3D target. Honestly I like the realism of the 2D targets overshooting a 3d Target. I also really like that all of the targets are actual life size target which really gives you a feel for looking at that animal at different yardages. I just got the new mule deer buck target and that thing is badass. The target alone will give you buck fever. We set it up in the field with just a small block target behind it which is such a realistic added pressure, if you don’t hit the vitals that arrow is gone. Just that added bit of pressure makes you really hone in on your target. head over to solotargets.com and use The Rich Outdoors code TRO to save 20% off your badass target system. Whats up killers, you guys hear me talk about goHUNT all the time, but now is your chance to try it out for Free. GoHunt is running a limited time free trial.  Ep 260: Wapiti Wednesday Elk Nut Paul Medel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:02:09

The Elk Nut Is back and full of more great info as always. Paul takes elk calling to a whole new level. Paul was on last August (EP 158 Elk Nut) and I think he absolutely blew people minds with some next level calling tips. This year he is back with even more. We dive into a lot of early season slow play calling setups and walk through case by case the do’s and don’ts of calling bulls. We talk about the common mistakes of callers and why challenging every bull on the mountain is a bad idea. This podcast is jam-packed full of great tips to help you be successful this elk season. Before we get started I need a favor from you guys. We created a hilarious spoof video called Elkaholics. We did the video as a promotion for Wapiti Wednesday but Facebook banned it from promotion so I need your help promoting the crap out of it to get around the politicly correct Facebook people. Go Check it out give and give it a share. Wapiti Wednesday is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps game calls are the best diaphragms out there. Even if you have tried to use diaphragm calls in the past but couldn’t, give Phelps AMP frame calls a try they are hands down the easiest calls to learn on. Also, the New “un-RIVAL-ed Bugle Tube” is out and available. The new tube packs a punch with great volume and tone, yet in a compact backcountry size. at only 4.5 ounces and 17.5” long this is ideal for guys packing in and not wanting the full-size bat. I am actually planning on rocking just the un-rival-ed tube this year on my Montana Hunt.  EP 259: Muley Monday Tyler Cole | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:24

Welcome to Muley Monday of The Rich Outdoors. Today is not your average legendary old-school killer. I commonly get tons of questions from new hunters so I thought it would be interesting to get a new hunter on the show and talk about the learning curve. Tyler Cole (@tyler_the_muley_reaper) may not be Jason Carter but I can tell Tyler is going to be a killer very shortly. Tyler, even though he just got back into hunting a few years ago is obsessed with hunting. He has been full on bitten by the backcountry bug. Tyler will be great because he is constantly learning and sponging up every bit of information he can get his hands on. I wasn’t sure how well this podcast would go considering the lack of success, but I really liked how it turned out. Tyler has no lack of effort or willpower and brings a great perspective to other new hunters. So many people don’t ever get into hunting seriously because they lack a mentor or someone to show them the ropes. Yet, Tyler is the perfect example to show that you don’t need anyone, the information available to everyone, you just need to put the work in. This episode is brought to you by On X maps.  EP 257: Post Wedding Wapiti Wednesday with Capt. James Nash & Friends | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:53:53

In today’s episode, I am joined with my good buddies Capt. James Nash who has been on the podcast before, as well as a few other hunting buddies, Mark, Pat, and Sam. We sit in the shop the morning after my wedding and discuss how James has taken a new lapproach to the way he is managing his elk ranch and applying some new strategies, what he has learned along the way that has improved his understanding of these amazing animals. We also have some in-depth conversations on arrow & broadhead weights and the data behind them, shot placement and of course some good stories. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did and learned some new insight along the way. Wapiti Wednesday is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps Calls are hands down my favorite diaphragms. I have tested and tried just about every diaphragm on the market and the amp frame is what I carry. The Amp frame is not only extremely easy to blow, but they are the most consist of calls you can find and extremely durable. As someone, who can blow out a diaphragm in a few days, the first time I used one of the new amp frame calls I was blown away at how long it lasted. I can get a few weeks out of a single Phelps diaphragm. Personally, I like the Amp Grey and the Amp White but if you have no idea what you like order 4-5 of them and see for yourself. Some you’re going to like for locating and some you’ll like for sexy cow sounds but I’d be willing to bet you will be able to use all of them and you’ll have some backups. A couple people have asked me if the bat bugle is necessary, for me 100% I am naked without a bat. The Phelps bat just gives me so much more reach with my bugle as far as being louder and carrying farther into a canyon. If if you only want to slip in on a heard and not say a word with a good locate bugle you can get that bull to give up his location from much farther away. Go get yourself some Phelps Game Calls before they sell out, use the TRO code and get FREE SHIPPING on your entire order. This episode is brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. Backcountry Fuel box is my newest creation. It is a monthly subscription box full of backcountry meals, snacks, bars, and all kinds of cool high energy options for your next backcountry adventure. I started the box because I wanted a way to try out all the cool new backcountry food options that were on the market, and also so I would always have stuff on hand for my own next adventure. There are just so many cool new options available. The June box had all kinds of great products and new companies that most people have probably never tried, like Four Points Bars, Peak Refuel, and Dark Mountain just to name a few. All in all the June box was packed full with 10 awesome products and discounts codes to all of the companies. Enough to taste test a few items and then hide the rest in my food tote until September. The Box is 33.30 a month but if you enter TRO at check out its only 29.97 per month for a box full of awesome stuff that you are actually going to use. Welcome to the Rich outdoors podcast. Thank you guys so much for all the messages and DM’s this time of year it seems we get a ton of new listeners and I just want to say thank you and my apologies if we didn’t get back to you. Today’s podcast is with Mr. Jaden Bales, who has been a huge help to me over the last year and I can’t thank him enough. Jaden has been helping me with social media and various other tasks as the podcast grows. Going back to last January we did a podcast with Mike and Angela Haralson about financial planning for hunting, which has had thousands of downloads and a ton of feedback. Jaden had the idea that we should also do a podcast about hunting on a college budget. After reminiscing about all of our hunting trips during those broke ass college days we decided to just hit record and go over some tips to hunting on the cheap. This was a fun episode and if you enjoy this podcast be sure to go back and check out Ep 198 with Mike and Angela. Also, Stay tuned after the show for an iTunes 5 star shoutout and free gear!  EP 254: Wapiti Wednesday with Cody Lujan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:32

This is one of those podcasts where we let out a little too much info! I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Cody Lujan, who is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to elk hunting. You have probably seen Cody on MeatEater with Steven Rhinela or various other shows. Cody has a lifetime of elk hunting experience and I think what I like most about him is that he really thinks outside of the box. In this episode, we talk about open country bulls and behaviors of non-migratory animals vs migratory herds. A lot of people tend to put all elk in the same category but the habits of both can differ widely. We also talk about an interesting topic I don’t think a lot of people have considered which is the effects of beetle-killed forests and how that dynamic is changing elk behavior. This is most definitely a must listen to the podcast when it comes to elk knowledge. Also real quick I before the podcast I need you guys to do me a favor. We made a pretty funny Wapiti Wednesday promotional video called Elkaholics. The problem is Facebook put the kibosh on our promotional effort and banned the video for promotion so I need your guys to help in sharing it. Click the link in the show notes, check out the video, and give it a share. I will be giving away a ton of Phelps Diagphrams to people who help us get around Facebook’s BS rules and share the video. Thank you guys so much. Wapiti Wednesday is brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. Phelps Calls are hands down my favorite diaphragms.  EP 253: Muley Monday with Mike Duplan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:56

Muley Monday is here! It seems the more Mule Deer podcasts I do, the more excited I get about chasing bucks this fall. Today’s guest is someone I look up too. It’s no secret that I am a hunting book nerd and read about every good hunting book I can get my hands on. Mike Duplan, who I was introduced to through David Long, is the co-author of their book The Edge: The Complete Approach to Hunting High Mountain Mule Deer. Mike is a very accomplished mule deer Hunter and has taken some truly giant bucks over the years. In this episode, we talk a fair amount about hunting late season bucks and hunting in snow storms. Mike is a huge advocate of mental toughness and time in the field to be a successful Mule deer hunter and I couldn’t agree more.  EP 252: Rob Gearing Mountaineering to Mountain Hunting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:07

Welcome to the podcast, today I am joined by a totally different kind of hunter or at least one with a totally different perspective on hunting. Rob Gearing aka Mr. G is the owner of Spartan Precision Equipment in the UK. Rob’s a very accomplished mountain climber and hardcore adventure, he also happens to manage the game on a big estate in the UK. Let me start by saying there might be some explicit language in this episode, so if the kiddos are in the car, just an FYI. In this episode, we dive down all kinds of rabbit holes. We talk about hunting in the UK, what hunting across the pond looks like, Rob’s passion for mountain hunting and big mountains in general. Rob has a really cool project that he is working on with trip-pod that breaks down into trekking poles or a shooting bi-pod, really all kinds of variation. Rob is an interesting dude and we had a blast on this episode. Also joining us is my good friend and podcast producer. John Gebuer who has been on back in our blacktail episode last winter. Like I said I really enjoyed this conversation with someone from a completely different perspective and background.  Link: Spartan Precision Equipment This episode brought to you by iSocialboost. iSocialboost is an Instagram growth tool that can help you grow your tribe in an organic way. iSocial boost has been helping me grow the Backcountry Fuel Box Instagram for the last couple months and I have been blown away with over 7,000 followers and helping convert followers to subscribers. Whether you are a small business or just want to grow your personal following, iSocialBoost can help you get thousands of real followers you fit your brand.  EP 251: Wapiti Wednesday with Ben Guttormson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:36

Welcome to Wapiti Wednesday, today I am joined by fellow Bozemanite Ben Guttormson. It seems like so many great elk hunters I meet in this town are brought here for there obsession for elk hunting. It also seems that some struggle while others pick it up rather quickly. Called it luck or call it skills Ben has definitely found a system that works for him. I like Ben’s style of hunting elk because he doesn’t solely rely on calling or on not calling but blends the two to suit the situation. In this podcast, we talk about Ben’s love for hunting elk, what pushes him, and what makes him a successful hunter. EP 250: Muley Monday with PNWild | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:13

Welcome to Muley Monday of The Rich Outdoors. Where every Monday we talk Mule deer hunting and tell awesome mule deer stories. Today’s guests were actually on last year for a Wapiti Wednesday. Zach and Jeff have a cool story of meeting and hunting together last year on a great elk tag they drew the year before. This time around, they join me to talk about some epic Mule Deer hunting that they had last year and they’re new found passion for high country bucks. I love talking to Jeff and Zach as they are both humble and know how to laugh. We had a great time chatting about both of there hunts from 2017 and all of the high, lows, and lessons learned. This year the two of them plan to spend some time in the high country of the Northwest again in search of OTC bucks and are planning on filming the hunt from scouting clear through to the hunt. They have put together a pretty awesome trailer or sneak peek into what they are working on. You can check it out here. Whats up killers, you guys hear me talk about goHUNT all the time, but now is your chance to try it out for Free. GoHunt is running a limited time Free Trial. Honestly, I like the realism of the 2D targets overshooting a 3d Target. Welcome to the show, and what a show do we have today. My guest today is Randy Newberg who needs no introduction and I am honored that he took the time out of his incredibly busy schedule to sit down and chat with me about elk hunting, life and everything in between. I originally wanted to have randy on for a Wapiti Wednesday episode, but we covered so much more, the conversation was so great I couldn’t just talk elk with Randy. Randy is someone I look up to for many reasons, he is a great entrepreneur and an innovator in the outdoor space. In this episode, we do talk all kinds of elk hunting and how to be an efficient hunter, but we also cover the highs and lows when you’re constantly hunting in new areas. If there’s one thing Randy Newberg has mastered, it’s e-scouting, and maximizing your time on a hunt. With his crazy schedule, Randy has to take full advantage of every minute on a hunt, so he always goes into a hunt knowing absolutely everything he can about the area. If you have limited time to hunt this year, then this is a must listen!  EP 248: Wapiti Wednesday with Donnie Drake | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:52

Welcome to the podcast and to Wapiti Wednesday. We are getting closer and closer to the magical month of September. This week I am joined by Donnie Drake of Elk 101. Donnie hunts with Corey Jacobsen and Dirk Durham where they have developed an amazing system for calling elk in. Over the years this trio has found success year in and year out no matter where they go. In this episode, Donnie shares some great stories and lessons learned over the years. He also has some crazy stories about taking an ambulance out of elk country, and his fall last year that left him urinating blood the next day!
