EP 232: The Best OTC Elk Tags State by State Breakdown | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:59

Whats up everybody, welcome to the last episode of Tag Tuesday for 2018. Which is good because that just means it is closer to season. Don’t worry though we still have plenty to cover between now and fall. Next week we are starting Muley Monday, Wapiti Wednesday is still going strong and I have some killer Thursday shows coming down the pipeline. So if you get pumped hearing good hunting stories be sure to tune in to Muley Monday and Wapiti Wednesday from now through fall. Like I said it is basically the end of application season with a few stragglers still out there and now we are just waiting for results. If you didn’t get selected for the elk hunt you wanted, it is time to find a tag the OTC way or over the counter. An over the counter tag is just that, one that you can just buy without having to draw. Many states have great OTC opportunities and in this episode, Dave Barnett and I are going to break down each state based on the OTC opportunity. Dave has some great articles on goHUNT.com and we will link to those in the show notes. where you will be able to see what we are talking about in the podcast with a ton of detail. If you are looking for a great OTC elk hunt this fall goHUNT.com is a must-have tool. There is a wealth of information at your fingertips in an extremely easy to use system.  EP 231: Spring Bears with Brian Barney | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:13

Today I am joined by the very accomplished Brian Barney of Eastman Elevated. Brian takes his hunting skills and preparation to a whole new level and has found success in every animal he chases because of it. When it comes to bears Brian not only gets it done year in and year out but does it on mature boars with archery tackle spot and stalk. In this episode Brian and I talk Spot and stock tactics for spring bear hunting. Last year Brian and I did a podcast on spring bear hunting and tactics we have both found over the years. Brian spends the bulk of his time hunting mountains in Montana and myself looking for bears in steep canyons of Eastern Oregon. There are a lot of similarities but also many differences. Moving to Montana this year it was like starting from scratch and having no prior knowledge of units, areas, or even habits in a lot of ways. This has been both fun and frustrating having to start from ground zero. In doing so it has opened my eyes to a lot of questions that I think I have probably taken for granted in previous podcasts. In this episode, Brian and I discuss the struggles and process of even finding an area to begin with. and then breaking down things to look for. We also discuss timelines, best season dates, and how to maximize the efficiency of time. Oregon and Montana seem to have different best hunting dates with vastly different winters and springs. We also Talk tactics for spot and stalk bears for both rifle and bow hunting. Brain Barney is a wealth of information on spring bear hunting and I think we could talk for hours on the subject. I Always learn more than a few things when I chat with Brain. This episode is brought to you by MTNTOUGH Fitness. For over a year, behind the scenes MTNTOUGH has been building an online training program specifically designed for Backcountry Hunters They have assembled an impressive team for this task, including a former Navy Seal, a former Army Colonel who instructed physical education at Westpoint, and couple trainers with decades of experience. I tested the program here in Bozeman, with Dustin Diefenderfer, the founder of MTNTOUGH and let me tell you this program will kick your butt. Over the years I have done a ton of various work out programs. with the last couple years spending most of my time running and using kettlebells. I was in pretty good shape when I started this workout and quickly realized this program is going to crush muscles I forgot I had. The online program is 90-days, all video based, and is delivered through the private MTNTOUGH site that is accessible on any device.  Think of a social platform specifically built for Backcountry Hunters, the MTNTOUGH program has all the social features so you can share, collaborate, encourage, and go through this challenging program together with the community. Make sure to go www.mtntough.com to get on the waiting list to be one of the first to get access to the program in June.  Oh, and MTNTOUGH is giving away 3 LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS to 3 winners who have their name on the waiting list. One day I saw something from Off Grid Food and I thought O I wanna try that, but honestly, I just don’t have time to order every little product that comes out to try it. That and I am always burning through the snack box which is empty when I wanna bomb up the mountain.  EP 230: Finding Good Bulls in Tough Units with ShedCrazy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:49

Today I am joined by Shed Crazy, Ben Dettamanti. Ben is known pretty much across the internet as Shed Crazy and spends the majority of his time picking up sheds. In fact, about a year ago Ben quit his full-time job and started picking up sheds full time and building a YouTube channel. Most will know Ben through Shed Crazy on social media and YouTube but Ben is also a successful elk hunter, having taken great bulls on OTC Utah hunts. If you know anything about OTC Utah bull tags it’s that they are tough hunts and very few people consistently take good bulls off of those areas. We also talk a fair amount about hunting wallows, a tactic that gets overlooked quite often. We dive into various wallow tactics and how to utilize wallows at various times during the season. This episode brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. If you fancy yourself an elk hunter and don’t have some Phelps amp diaphragms in your bag of tools, you are not doing it right. Take it from me I have tested nearly every, if not every diaphragm on the market past and present and these things are hands down far and away the best there is. Phelps game calls are consistent which is one thing I drive me nuts about other calls. Jason Phelps the owner is an amazing elk caller for one, but more importantly he a brilliant engineer, and obsessive about quality, which makes his calls consistent and super high quality. If you haven’t been able to use a diaphragm call before, first off you need to learn, and second buy yourself a few amp frames to learn on these are far and away the easiest calls to learn on. I don’t care what anyone says being able to call will make you a better hunter. doesn’t mean you gotta call all the time, but having the ability can mean the difference in a week-long hiking trip and eating elk steaks all winter. I prefer the latter. Phelps Game Calls are finally in stock again, but you better order fast because last year they sold out of a lot of reeds before the season. Get free shipping on your order with the code TRO. Go get you a pile of reeds and start practicing now! This episode brought to you by OnX maps. OnX is the most trusted private/ public mapping system available and any more I don’t go anywhere without my OnX maps. The OnX Hunt app available on your phone turns your smartphone into a handheld GPS that works with or without service. With over 400 map overlays the possibilities are endless. I love the ability to switch from topo to satellite, to hybrid modes, allowing you to see actual terrain thickness. The OnX hunt app allows you to share locations with your buddies extremely easily and I find myself using this feature all the time. You can also log into your OnX account from multiple sources allowing you to scout from your desktop or tablet and explore with confidence with your smartphone or GPS. On X membership is a must have for any serious western hunter.  EP 229: Tag Tuesday California with Tony Lombardi | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:07

Today I am joined by my good buddy and California hog hunting guide, Tony Lombardi. If you guys want to go on a hog hunt you need to go with Tony. I did a hunt with Tony 3 years ago and we have been close friends ever since. He’s a great guy and has some killer hog hunting in Cali not only with a ton of hogs but it is beautiful country hunting pigs in rolling hill country of California. In this episode, we chat about hunting in California and cover everything from hunting as a resident to applying as a non-resident. We cover public land pig hunting and even applications for access. Whether you are a resident or a non-resident you should pull some great info from this episode. GoHUNT.com  just added California to their growing list of states and did a great job with the launch. I can’t say enough good things about goHUNT.com, they continue to add new states and grow their information. If you listen to Tag Tuesday, you need a goHUNT account. That is all there is to it, I use goHUNT religiously and I love the platform. If you fancy yourself a hunter, you need to go sign up for goHUNT and become an insider member. Use the promo code TRO when you sign up and you will automatically get $50 to use in the gear shop.  Today’s episode also brought to you by GoWild App. GoWild is the Fastest-Growing and Most active app for hunters, anglers, and Outdoors enthusiasts. Thousands of people joining weekly. Most major social media platforms have strict anti-hunting and anti-firearms policies. When you use those apps, they make money in advertising, which they in turn use to expand a platform that doesn’t support hunting. GoWild not only supports hunting but donates revenue back into conservation groups and organizations like Raise Em Outdoors, which is helping teach kids to hunt and fish.  EP 228: Stories from 60 years and 16,000+ Antler Collection with James Phillips aka "Antler-Man" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:34

Today’s episode is with a pretty special guest. In this podcast, I am joined by Mr. James Philips aka Antlerman. Mr. Philips started picking up shed antlers over 60 years ago and has been doing ever since with a passion and precision that will rival any man. James not only picked up antlers for 60 years but he saved nearly all of them except for a couple thousand back in the day to put his girls through college. As many of you know, I love talking with Old Timers or folks with lots of experience, this was no exception. I absolutely loved getting a tour of the shed shack where he has the majority of his 16,000 plus antler collection, and hearing the stories. In 60 years of shed hunting, James has come across some very interesting finds lying around in the woods and I am just happy we get to sit down, hear some cool stories and share a moment this the Antlerman. If you guys are ever in Three Forks Montana I suggest you look him up and take a tour through James’ collection. Stay tuned after the show for a 5 star shout out and some free gear. Also, today is the last day to get your order in for Backcountry Fuel Box, if you want to get in on the may box. Otherwise, the next box won’t ship until June 20th.  EP 227: Wapiti Wednesday with Garth Jensen of Huntin Fool | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:26

Welcome to Wapiti Wednesday, and what an episode at that. Garth Jensen is an assassin on the mountain from bucks to bulls Garth gets it done. This turned out to be a killer episode and one of my favorites so far this year. Garth had an epic year a couple years back drawing two premium tags, one in Utah and another in Arizona. With the stars aligning in the tag draws the pressure was on. The season proved difficult having to spend 20 days in Utah before even getting a chance to think about his Arizona tag. This episode will get you fired up for the season with a tail of two epic hunts. Garth and I also chat about a fair amount of tactics throughout the show and cover many of the failures and success throughout the struggles he faced. Patience and persistence prevailed and Garth was able to harvest a 350 bull and a 370 bull in the same year. You won’t want to miss this episode! This episode brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. If you fancy yourself an elk hunter and don’t have some Phelps AMP diaphragms in your bag of tools, you are not doing it right.  EP 226: Planning A DIY Antelope HUNT | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:27

In this episode, Mr. Hunt DIY himself Zach Bowhay joins me to talk about how to plan a DIY Antelope Hunt in Wyoming. This information generally works for most any state but I wanted to cover Wyoming specifically to pair it with our Tuesday episode of application strategy in Wyoming. With Wyoming draw deadline at the end of May, I wanted to make sure all of those who have an interest going on a great antelope hunt this fall get the info and start planning now. Probably the two most important tools I would consider in setting up a DIY Antelope hunt and we talk about at length in this episode are goHUNT.com and On X Maps. Both of which will make doing a DIY Antelope hunt out west so much easier. In fact, Having ON X Maps is pretty much a must on most any Antelope hunt in the west as you can pretty much guarantee that most anywhere you find antelope it is going to be checker-boarded in bits of BLM ground. I also rely on On X to Scout units and help me make decisions on which unit to apply for. Like I said if you want to plan an Antelope hunt get yourself a goHUNT account and On X account. Our TRO code works for both and will save you some money. Overall I highly recommend an antelope hunt if you have never been. It is a super fun hunt, and with a couple buddies, you can make it a trip of memories that will last a lifetime. Today’s episode brought to you by iSocialboost.  EP 225: Wapiti Wednesday with Ed Screey | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:54

In this episode, I am joined by long-time elk hunter and predator caller Ed Sceery. Growing up Sceery game calls were a staple in my hunting pack. In fact, the first elk I ever called in was with a scenery Hyper Hot Cow Call. It is always a pleasure getting to chat with those with many years experience on me, they tend to have the best stories. In this episode, Ed shares his early days of working horseback for the forest service and finding a love for the mountains as well as elk hunting. We chat about the early days of learning to call coyotes and making a living off coyote hides. We also talk elk hunting of course and tactics learned in a lifetime of studying animals. Tune in every Wednesday morning from now through October for the best Elk hunting stories, Tactics, and more on The Rich Outdoors Wapiti Wednesday. In this episode, Robert Hanneman and I talk about Wyoming for antelope and mule deer. Hanneman has hunted Wyoming a fair amount and just had an awesome antelope hunt down there last year. Wyoming is an awesome state if you want to chase antelope with both plenty of opportunity as well as a trophy. We also cover many of the misnomers about antelope trophies and the number of points required to draw a tag. we also cover some great options for those just looking to fill the freezer and have a fun hunt in Wyoming. Tune in this Thursday as we do another podcast with Zach Bowhay of Hunt DIY on planning a DIY antelope-specific hunt. We also cover Wyoming for mule deer and some things to think about if you want to wait for the buck of a lifetime. Overall, Wyoming is a great state to apply in. With only a couple points you can have a great hunt. Within Wyoming, a true giant in any species could come from just about any unit in the state. Take Wyoming, for example, Using goHUNT’s Filtering 2.0 tool I can map out my Wyoming Application strategy super fast and save my self a ton of time. For me, I wanted to hunt antelope mainly for meat but didn’t want to burn my points, so I use the filtering tool to see what units I can draw 100% as a second choice. I can also filter those units by the amount of public land. Combine this with checking OnX Maps and that’s how I selected where I want to hunt antelope this year. There are a ton of other things you could filter by as well from the potential size of the goat, to buck to doe ratio’s, or even season dates. GoHUNT has saved me a ton of time putting together my 2018 schedule this year. Sign up for goHUNT.com it is a great service and I use it all the time.  EP 223: Kevin Timm of Seek Outside | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:19

Welcome to the show, today I am joined by the owner and founder of Seek Outside, a popular tent manufacturer out of Colorado. Kevin is a great guy and has a ton of knowledge in tents, backpacks and all kinds of outdoor gear. In this episode, we dive into various gear selections, such as, choosing the right shelter, discussing the pros and cons of tarps, teepees, and double wall tents. Seek Outside also makes a great wall-tent style synthetic fabric tent called the “Courthouse” and it makes for a great horse packing tent as well. I am a huge fan of Seek Outside’s Courthouse tent and have spent many nights in it this past season. We also discuss various styles of packable wood stoves and the pros and cons of each. Kevin also introduces a new, really cool, and super simple pack design which is extremely light for a pack that can handle gear loads up to 7400 cubic inches! Also real quick before we get started I wanted to tell you that as of tomorrow maybe late today Backcountry Fuel Box has a whole new site. We ran into some serious problems with the first site as there was no way for subscribers to login in and update their info.  EP 222: Wapiti Wednesday is Here with Andrew Whitney & Pete Muennich | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:53

What’s up girls and boys! You know what time it is, it is Wapiti Wednesday time! Which also means that elk season is fast approaching, or at least we can officially start counting down the days. What better way to get Wapiti Wednesday kicked off for 2018 than to have on a couple of true elkoholics. In this episode of Wapiti Wednesday, I am joined by good friends Andrew Whitney and Pete Muennich. Both of them are Montana transplants that didn’t find out they were obsessed with elk hunting until they got to Montana. We start the episode off with their laughable attempts and chasing bulls in the early years. We talk about the highs and lows as well as they’re an impressive learning curve and some of the tactics they developed along the way. Pete and Andrew have really grown in the last decade and were fortunate enough to have a banner year in 2017 harvest bulls each as well as helping buddies punch their tags as well. Rounding out 2017 with 6 point bull a week during the season. This episode will leave you begging for September to get here faster. If you thought you weren’t really having withdrawals yet just wait until you give this podcast a listen. If you call yourself an elk hunter, this will get you fired up. Tune in every Wednesday morning from now through October for the best Elk hunting stories, Tactics, and more on The Rich Outdoors Wapiti Wednesday. If you enjoy Wapiti Wednesday be sure to give it a share and a review on iTunes. Thank you so much for tuning in every week! Show Sponsors: This episode brought to you by Phelps Game Calls. I prefer the ladder. Phelps Game Calls are finally in stock again, but you better order fast because last year they sold out of a lot of reeds before the season. Get free shipping on your order with the code TRO. Go get you a pile of reeds and start practicing now! This Episode brought to you by Backcountry Fuel Box. I know what a lot of you are thinking. I’m not really a subscription box kind of person, but hear me out. This is the one subscription box you need. Backcountry Fuel Box is a monthly box of backcountry meals, snacks, bars, and all kinds of food for your next adventure. This box will introduce you to so many cool brands that you may have never heard of before, Brands Like Protein Puck, which are delicious by the way, Fbomb nut butter, Bgood Bars, Rugged Meat sticks, Greenbelly Meals, and so many more. Each month is different, new products for you to test out and try. You can also just stock up and save each months box of goodies for your upcoming hunting season. Either way the Backcountry Fuel Box is the best way to test out, stock up, and save money on the products you need anyway without having to order each one or even pay shipping.

 EP 221: Hunting in Oregon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:35

Welcome to The Rich Outdoors Tag Tuesday. Big thanks to goHUNT.com for making Tag Tuesday possible. goHUNT and specifically the goHUNT insider membership is more than just a hunting research tool. With the gear shop, equipment testing, and the tag strategy articles it is a one-stop shop for getting you set up for success in western hunting. Even as most of the tags draws have come out and left you without any great draw tags. goHUNT.com will help you find those “hidden gem” over the counter hunts and honestly that’s one of my favorite features about goHUNT. The ability to fill in my season with hunts or units that aren’t well known. If you are on the fence about spending the money for a goHUNT membership let me tell you it is well worth the money. Sign up now with the TRO code and get $50 automatically in your account to spend in the goHUNT Gear Shop. In Fact, Oregon is one of those states you could research within goHUNT to find a great over the counter tag to fill your season. Today I am joined by Calvin Halladay of Sheep Mountain Outfitters to talk about Oregon tag application strategy. In this episode, we dive in to my old home state and cover how the point creep in Oregon is affecting certain hunts and how some of those top units are doing. Cal spends as much time as anyone in the many of the top units and has a great heartbeat on the pulse of the top end Bulls, Bucks Sheep and Goats. We cover how to apply as well as who should be applying in Oregon as a non resident, as well as some things to avoid. We also cover Oregon from the perspective of hunters who just want to hunt as Oregon has a ton of over the counter potential for bow archery elk and deer. Today’s Tag Tuesday is also brought to you by the goWild App. If you are tired of all the drama on other social media sites, download the goWild App. It’s everything you love about hunting fishing and the great outdoors without the drama. Not only is it now available for Droid and iPhone but goWild just launched the ability to follow people and Direct message from within the App as well.  EP 220: Justin Shaffer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:22

Welcome to the podcast today’s episode is with a total badass of a hunter as well as an Army Ranger. Even though Justin is probably sitting in his lazy boy with his foot up listening to this because he just had surgery on his ankle. Which still hasn’t slowed him down much. Justin is a straight killer and will always find a way to get it done. A ranger, an artist in taxidermy, and has an outfitting business as well a dad to a total badass daughter. I have a lot of respect for Justin and his accomplishments both on and off the mountain. Born and raised in Colorado Justin took full advantage of the opportunity to move to Alaska, and I do mean full advantage. I really applaud those who live life to the fullest. This episode made possible by Backcountry Fuel Box. The best way to try out new backcountry meals and food. Honestly, I started backcountry Fuel to scratch my own itch, I wanted a box that sent me like things Green Belly Bars, or protein bars so I didn’t have to order them all the time or actually go shopping. Enter Backcountry Fuel Box. Each month, for about $30, we send you a $40-50 value of great snacks, meals, bars, goos, or gels. The month’s April box should be hitting doorsteps as we speak and I think it turned out pretty good. I really love the Protein Pucks I found those this last year and loved them. They are packed full of protein and energy. We also have a couple Fbomb products in there and a bunch more, but I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Any of you guys who get the box and you want to try the any of the products do me a favor and do an Instagram story for review of the product. Let us know what you think. Also if you haven’t yet go sign up for the may box it is such a great way to stock up before season or just test out new products. Use TRO and you’ll save 10% off.  EP 219: Hunting in Idaho | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:39

Hey, Welcome to Tag Tuesday! If you plan to hunt in Idaho this year you are definitely going to want to check this episode out. My buddy Zach Bowhay of Hunt DIY and I had some great discussions on choosing what species to put in for in Idaho. Personally, though I have put in for goat almost every other year, I am really leaning toward moose and in this episode, we will talk about why. We also discuss Idaho as a great DIY option with tons of over the counter opportunity. This episode brought to you by goHUNT.com I use goHUNT religiously, in fact, I was running through various filters last night until midnight still trying to make up my mind on what I want to put in for this year. I have an OTC rifle elk hunt planned in Idaho so trying to decide if should try for a better elk tag, try and squeeze in a moose hunt, or if this is my year to draw a goat tag. Honestly, I am booked solid this year with what I think will be some really good, fun hunts. I really don’t know if I can even squeeze in another tag, but the more I play around with goHUNT’s filtering tool the more tags I find and want. Do yourself a favor put more tags in your pocket by getting yourself a goHUNT insider membership. Use promo code TRO and get $50 credit to use on gear in the gear shop. This episode also brought to you by the goWild app. This app is blowing up. It is super cool to see so many of you logging time listening to the podcast on the goWild app. GoWild is such a cool place without the drama. I love seeing everyone posting all of their success photos without a bunch of negative nancy’s ruining it. With the goWild app you sign up and create an account. It is totally free. then you can choose threads to follow or be a part of. From cooking to DIY projects, to big game hunting, and even this thing called fishing. Not sure what that is but sounds cool. You can then log your trophies, scouting or even shooting. It is a cool way to compete with friends.  EP 218: Chris Parrish Turkey Hunting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:27:25

Welcome to The Rich Outdoors podcast. Spring hunting is here and I have seen a ton of gobblers hitting the ground already. Actually, as this podcast airs, I am going to be in Oregon chasing thunder chickens for my first nonresident Oregon hunt. I hear a lot of people talk about bear hunting vs turkey hunting. To me, it doesn’t really make sense, I’m all for both. In two months you can easily do plenty of both and throw in a pig hunt, couple shed hunting trips, maybe a bow fishing trip or 5. Yes to all of it. I love chasing true mountain birds, I have nothing against people shooting valley birds, but to me, I would rather comb the mountains all day trying to locate a bird and chase him just like I would a big bull elk. It is just what I like to do. In this episode, I am joined by world-renowned turkey caller and accomplished elk hunter, Chris Parrish. We talk about some of the similarities and differences between chasing turkeys and elk. We also go over many of the mistakes people make and how to go from being a good turkey caller to a great turkey caller. Huge thanks to today’s show sponsor, goWild App, goWild is the newest and coolest way to connect with your friends about the outdoors. GoWild has their own patented scoring system that allows you to log your hunts, your training, your scouting and compete with friends. Overall goWild is just a really cool community of like-minded people without all of the Facebook drama. I really think the cofounder Brad Luttrell and the team have created something cool. It says a lot when I let my 10 year old niece create an account and sign up. One of the cool features they have is that you can now log time listening to podcasts. So if you head over setup a goWild account and log time listening to The Rich Outdoors podcast I will send you a free sticker pack. be sure you tag me or the podcast though so I see it. Also, goWild has a ton of really cool giveaways going on right now so go check it out. Available for iPhone and Droid phones! Todays Show also brought to you byOn X Maps. On X Maps is the most trusted source for public & private mapping. If you fancy yourself a turkey hunter or even a connoisseur of turkeys, an On X Maps would be a huge tool in the turkey vest. With the On X Maps on your phone, you could find those birds that are moving between public and private land or find access to public land that will hold remote birds that no one has messed with yet. One of my favorite features of On X Maps is the ability to see land and vegetation features. One of the ways I use this is to look at the maps and make an educated guess on where that bird is roosting as well as where that bird is going to fly down or head to in the morning. From there I can mark that location and be set up on a small meadow before daylight. I really love the ability to see openings and changes in vegetation in satellite view, right on my phone. Also, stay tuned after the show as I have an iTunes 5 star shout out and a TRO hoody to give away!
