EP 243: How to Train Your Dog To Be a Great Hunting Asset with Jeremy Moore

The Rich Outdoors show

Summary: I recently got a new puppy. Now as someone who has had nothing but labs and thought I would never have anything but labs I ended up down a whole new road and with a dog bread I had never heard of before. After a lot of back and forth and thinking about what I wanted in a dog, and maybe just a wild hair for something new, I settled on a Catahoula. I really wanted a loyal dog that would be alert in Grizzly country. A dog that would be by my side and warn me of a bear I may not see. A bonus if it picks up sheds and if it can track a wounded animal, great. Double bonus if it is big enough to pack a little weight. The downside to Catahoula’s is That they can be hard to train and can be stubborn. Like I’ve said, I’ve had some great labs and have trained the two I’ve had to be stand out dogs. With that in mind I figured, why not try to calm a crazy Catahoula cattle dog. To help me get on the right track I reached out to Jeremy Moore of Dog Bone Hunter. Jeremy is an awesome dog trainer that specializes in shed dogs and game recovery. We had a great talk on getting my pup started in the right direction as well as principals to think about when training your hunting companion. For more info be sure to check out Jeremy’s training videos and podcast as this 2-hour podcast barely scratches the surface of the topic.
This episode brought to you by On X maps. We Actually just had Brad and John from goWild on the show and had a blast getting to know those guys and getting a behind the scenes look at why they built the app and some of the really cool features within the app. The GoWild app has a ton of cool features but one of the coolest features is the proprietary new scoring system that allows you to enter in your trophies and be scored on much more than just the inches of antler. Their scoring algorithm takes into consideration things like the weapon used, distance of the shot, public or private land. This gives you the ability to compete with your buddies even if he shot his buck with a bow and you shot yours with a rifle. The app also allows you to log time for things like hours scouted, or checking trail cameras. The team over at goWild understands that it’s more than just how many inches of horn a buck has, it is about the whole experience. Go check out the episode we and then go download the app. Its free and the best part is they do a ton of gear giveaways all the time!

Show Notes:

Meet Jeremy Moore: Expert Dog Trainer – Start
Cody’s Background with Hunting Dogs – 10:36
Questions Jeremy Typically Asks – 17:00
Jeremy on “Ideal Breeds” – 23:54
Where & How to Start Training – 41:33
What to Focus on First Few Months – 49:54
