Episode-2641- A New Look at “Bug Out Locations” in the Context of Pandemic Threat | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:45

Let’s start out with this, today’s show is not “since there is a pandemic you should run to a bug out location, or go buy one”.  Rather we have discussed bugging in (what everyone is doing) and bugging out (what only those with very well prepped BOLs are doing right now) many times.  As I thought about our old property in Arkansas I began to consider what it would be like if we still lived there right now. I also started thinking what if we had not sold it when we left?  Would we go up there right now?  My answer is a resounding no.  Everything thing here is better.  We have tons of storage, but the production is the real key.  This property could keep us fed for a year easy as long as we can feed the ducks and the fish, which we can do at least 50% of with no inputs if we need to. So I started thinking, now that we actually have had a global disaster, a real one vs. a conjured up one in a prepper fiction book, how does that change the concept of a bug out location.  I also thought about this, despite what the TV scares you into the odds you will die of CoVid are dramatically low, really low.  Like even if you get it only about 2% and much lower if you maintain good healthy life habits, watch your weight (obesity is the largest comorbidity other than age). More if you do have a underlying condition it is pretty easy to bug in almost anywhere and self isolate right now.  You can get food delivered and based on how CoVid spreads, reduce risk of infection to very very low possibility.  But as we as preppers must do, what happens when we say what if?  As in what if this pandemic had a death rate of say 15%, and a real rate like that? Anyone being remotely intellectually honest right now knows CoVid has a mortality rate well under 1%, because we have no idea how many cases there really are but we know it is minimum 5X the official number with the majority of cases being asymptomatic. So right now, I sit just north of Fort Worth, there have been just a hair over 900 cases in my county, which means more like 4,500-10,000 depending on the X factor.  This has all resulted in a whopping 29 deaths, in a county with a population of 2 million people.  So given my set up here, why the hell would I “bug out”.  I have an easily defended property, I can help my son and his family, I have neighbors who look out for one another and my odds of dying by slipping in the shower and breaking my neck are literally higher then dying of CoVid, frankly likely higher than getting it right now. If a real 15% of people were dying though, if the spread was far worse, if Tarrant County looked like NYC and we had people dropping like flies here, would I head for the hills?  Yea, I might.  If that were the case, what would I have needed to set up in those hills to make bugging out, make sense. Join Me Today to Discuss… Let’s start with some humor and take a lesson from it – Post I Read on the Air The real lesson on spread with CoVid is all about population density Most people bugged in, for most people it was the right decision, if I lived in NYC and had a choice though, I would have left What makes a good Bug Out Location Low population density Significant natural resources Built in security with enhancements Good neighbors Comfortable conditions 6 months of stored food, water and medicine Paid for or easy to cover payments Rapid up turn of food production The other side How much can you really take with you What about pets and live stock Going before you need to is the only real way to succeed What about the security of your primary location What about your income, your job, etc. The real lessons here The best time to bug out would be if times are decent or really bad There will never be a perfect answer or perfect solution BOLs are great, but not practical for everyone The current situation was best addressed with practical mental, physical, resource and financial preparedness There will be [...]

Episode-2639- Urban Gardening and 130 Varieties of Tomatoes with Emma Biggs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:45

Emma Biggs is a 14-year-old gardener and garden communicator. Emma raised over 130 tomato varieties in her Toronto garden in 2019—gardening in containers, in straw bales on a driveway, in a neighbor’s yard, in wicking beds under a walnut tree, and on the garage roof. Her garden is the source of many of her stories—and the source of produce that she sells in her neighborhood. Emma gives talks at libraries, seed exchanges, garden clubs, and garden shows. She is the co-host of The Garage Gardeners Radio Show, and co-host of kids gardening videos on the From Dirt to Dishes gardening channel on YouTube. She has a monthly blog on the Harrowsmith magazine website about growing tomatoes. Her latest book, Gardening with Emma, helps kids find the fun in gardening (and helps adults remember how much fun gardening is.) With an urban garden and 130+ tomato varieties, Emma knows how to fit lots of tomatoes in a small space. She grows hers in the ground, in a neighbor’s yard, in wicking beds, on the roof, and on the driveway. In today’s show Emma discusses different ways to grow and train tomato plants, everything from staking to cages, to trellises and in straw bales. She also shares some of her favorite varieties and how she can even grow tomatoes under a black walnut tree.  Episode-2634- Report from Nine Mile Farm – Why Now is a Time of Opportunity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:59

While I may frame the show today in regard to the current crisis it is all upbeat and optimistic, and the reason is there is a lot to be optimistic about.  I am going to start with how a 60 readiness plan works, why if you have one you should be in great shape right now. I am going to talk about strategic planing and utilization of things like the the “payroll protection” provision of the CAREs act and building a business right now, yea right now.  Yet I am also going to talk about the hands on things I am doing on my property right now.  Like building more hydroponics systems, more consideration about a micro CSA for my area, expanding my gardening, expanding my aquaculture, plant propagation and more. It may sound in a negative way too opportunistic but the truth is most people, especially those who are prepared can actually come out of the current situation ahead.  I have been asked a lot lately, why I am not more concerned and why I am so optimistic despite all that has gone wrong. The answer is simple, I am and have been prepared for things to go wrong, the reason is less important than the what.  Once you are in that mode, you simply adapt, improvise and overcome.  Those that do generally benefit.  History is full of stories of how tragedy led to fortunes being made, but only the tales of the famous or infamous stand the test of time.  For every such story there are thousands of smaller success stories.  We will never know them, they are lost to time, but you can be one, right now, if you chose. Join Me Today to Discuss… 60 Days of readiness is all most ever need, this time proves that true If you are prepared, you can think, if you can think you can adapt, if you can adapt you can thrive Something was always going to happen, what does not really matter only that, grab that mindset and it all gets easier The world is on sale, here is what I have seen and what I have done I have contacts that dumbed over a million into the Stock Market at 19K I got over 10K off on my Subaru Lease I got over 600 off on my new John Dheere I got over 800 off on a chipper shredder I MIGHT buy my dream truck, sticker is 47K, I have the dealer at 31K and have yet to fill out a form I may borrow 10K and never have to pay it back, many people will do this Mid sized companies can borrow 10 million and not pay it back (not all but some) Millions of people now see value where they never have before, what opportunity does that spell for you Keep in mind one way or another this ends, it always has, so it always will A final thought, two words, life insurance What I am doing at Nine Mile Farm New deep water, aeroponics, kratkyish hydro system – video link New vertical hydro system, for fennel and strawberries, etc. Vertical indoor farm being taken to arugula and spinach production for the summer Planting out all the wicking beds in the aviary and aviary conversion starts next week I have hundreds of plants started for the new garden beds Considering the micro CSA approach yet again, key is to make it easy, fast, simple Final Thoughts – take care of yourself and be optimistic Four Ways to cultivate optimism Think about the future Exercise Give to Charity Check on a Neighbor   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com My Podcast About What a Pandemic Would be Like from 2010 Cracklin’ Rosie – Neil Diamond   Sponsors of the Day Ready Made Resources Knife Kits   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2631- A New Look at Back Yard Livestock | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:03

Yesterday we talked about keeping a dairy cow.  Not gonna lie, just for the butter and cheese, I’d love to but it is not in the cards for me.  I am thinking about a neighbor that raises beef and wondering if some consortium of neighbors can be set up with a cow share, but that is for another day. I want to talk to you guys today about various back yard smaller livestock.  Like chickens, ducks, rabbits, quail, pigeons, turkeys and fish.  Odds are almost anyone can keep one or two of these.  I personally see it being way easier to get laws and codes changed on chickens after CoVid 2020 comes to a close, lots of minds have been opened to a new reality at this point. Though I will put some of this new thinking from the CoVid pandemic into today’s show, 95% of it will be focused on just keeping critters along with the how and why.  There is too much gloom and doom going on, but there is good news on the treatment front yet again.  So I will share that in today’s opener.  Episode-2629- On Cooking with Your Preps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:33

Many preppers are now looking at their stock piles and while they don’t necessarily need to go into long term storage they are using some of it and pondering say another 30-60 days of limited availability and restricted movement.  Keith Snow reached out about doing a show on cooking with your preps and I thought it was a great idea.  Keith is a long term friend of TSP and served on the expert council for a number of years.  For those that don’t know him thought, here is his bio. Chef Keith Snow is the author of The Harvest Eating Cookbook-Running Press 2009, and host of Harvest Eating Radio, which has surpassed 350 episodes and continues to grow a substantial audience of devoted listeners, true friends and fans. Keith joins us today to discuss cooking from your storage and his eCourse called Food Storage Feast.   In this course he teaches you to make gourmet meals with your preps, and integrate your food storage plan into your daily menu so you can really “store what you eat and eat what you store.” Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Food Storage Feast – Remember MSB Gets 70 bucks off, code in the MSB Private Area Under Benefits L’oro Del Sud Pasta – 20 Packs Shipping Same Week on Amazon Street Fighting Man – The Rolling Stones   Sponsors of the Day Butcher Box Backwoods Home   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
