Episode-1149- William Golightly on Buying Rural Land | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:59:55

TweetToday on The Survival Podcast we are joined by William (Billy) Golightly.  Billy is a real estate agent that specializes in rural properties in north central Florida. He joins us today to discuss searching for bug out or retreat properties.  We discuss things like buying old timber land that has been cut.  Earning income with a property to offset expenses. We also talk about how to find the right type of agent for this type of property search.  When it makes sense to buy a property on the courthouse steps in a tax sale and when it doesn’t.  We cover the importance of surveys and title insurance and some creative ways to find great properties that are affordable.  Episode-1148- Tom Stearns of High Mowing Organic Seeds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:15

TweetTom Stearns of High Mowing Organic Seeds Tom Stearns began gardening at an early age at his family home in CT.  Prior to completing a degree in Sustainable Agriculture from Prescott College in AZ, he began saving seeds.  A hobby was born in 1996 in Vermont, when Tom began sharing these seeds with others through a small seed flyer. Today High Mowing Organic Seeds has since expanded into one of the leading organic seed companies in the U.S., supplying both home gardeners and commercial growers.  Tom’s vision has always been to create a company that would help support the re-building of healthy food systems, first in Vermont, followed by the rest of the U.S. He has also taught numerous workshops since 1996 on many topics such as ag. education, economics, community supported agriculture, genetic engineering, plant breeding, local food systems, sustainable business, investing and more.  His informal, personal style, ability to explain complex issues and infectious enthusiasm makes him a popular and inspiring speaker. In addition, he has served on the board of several agricultural organizations, most notably as the current President of The Center for an Agricultural Economy since 2008.  He lives on 50 acres in Vermont, with his wife Heather, and their two girls, Ruby and Cora. Tom joins us to discuss beyond fighting GMO’s and moving past the things that we don’t like and how to start building the things we want.  We begin by discussing why seeds matter so much in the first place. How we lost control of our seeds as a socitety and how individuals, how can get started saving seeds easily. We also discuss how seed self-reliance contribute to building healthy communities and individual sovereignty.   We also go beyond seed saving and discuss how to breed varieties for the food systems that we want.  We also do discuss some of the true dangers of GMO foods and how they actually contribute to bad agricultural practices and the destruction of soils.  Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Mint TSP Gear Bulk Ammo – (sponsor of the day) Safecastle Royal – (sponsor of the day) High Mowing Organic Seeds Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1147- Portrait of a Financial Collapse | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:03

TweetSo yesterday I screwed up and pointed to a parody site as though it was an actual site put out by the NSA.  The biggest problem with my screw up (other then for me personally) is that it may have led many to believe that government survalence isn’t really, “that bad”.  Sadly it is, here are some vetted examples, The PRISM Program Phone Collection Data Includes a LOT more than just Verizon Government Says Secret Court Opinion on Law Underlying PRISM Program Needs to Stay Secret Former Counter Terrorism Agent Says All Calls are Accessible to the Government The Government Tracks our Children with Student Specific Data I bring this up because it does play a role in a future America where power vacuums form, the financial elite walk out the door and America falls from global dominance. Join Me Today As I Discuss… What most likely sets of our final economic collapse What happens in the next few days What the government might choose to do to maintain order Why some states will succeed and why some may try and fail How the government would force a revalued currency into acceptance How all this surveillance and stored data could come back to bite us Why we need to be thinking about these things now It will go wrong but there are many different ways it could go wrong The collapse is the only thing that could derail the coming police state The collapse is also the thing that could most empower a coming police state Why the constitution is now feared by those in power Start in your own backyard, right now it is all you really have Why America will always be “wealthy” and why that is good and bad Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Mint TSP Gear Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) Vote to Finalize the Walking to Freedom Naughty List Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1146- Listener Feedback for 6-10-13 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:17

TweetJoin Me Today as I Answer Your eMails Special Notice – Today’s show contains a complete and grievous error on my part.  I have edited in a disclaimer about that, posted a blog post about it, will be putting out the acknowledgement of it on Facebook and Twitter and mention it on tomorrow’s show. Unlike many in the media I won’t print a retraction in fine print, or simply pull the episode.  I will stand up and admit my error.  I thought a very official looking parody website of the NSA was an actual government site and I used this site to make my case today.  That was in 100% error.  While I believe much of the information to be accurate, the insinuation that it is official government data is again 100% wrong.  I apologize for the error and hope that publicly acknowledging it and not simply removing the entire episode and burying the issue shows that I do run this show with the utmost integrity.  Remember while I always strive for accuracy this show isn’t news, it is one man’s opinion and all men at least all honest men get it wrong from time to time. Today on The Survival Podcast I take your questions and emails on the NSA Spying on the American People, China building the Nicaraguan Canal, a moronic toy gun buy back, the education system and more.  Episode-1144- Building Wealth with John Pugliano | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:37

TweetJohn Pugliano has been in corporate America for past 20+ years as an industrial products business development salesman.  More importantly for past 25+ years he has taught myself to invest in the stock market and today has a net worth in excess of 1 million dollars. Recently he has become licensed and started an investment advisory firm.  Like myself, John has had an extremely low opinion of the financial adviser industry- which is one reason why he has started his own firm. John joins us to discuss building wealth and steps to financial independence (get rich slow, 21 years or less, depending on your knowledge and situation).   This is a “beyond Dave Ramsey” get out of debt concept with three critical steps 1) Learn a marketable skill 2) Get paid for achievement not by the hour 3) Develop passive income. Today we discuss how this works based on Thomas Stanley’s book “The Millionaire Next Door”.   We also discuss how can just about anyone become financially independent in 21 years or less. Ways to detect “financial liars.  How to get your kid’s to fund their own education and how living debt free is the ultimate way to run your financial life.  Episode-1143- The Patriot Nurse on Medical Prep and Medical Myths | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:14

TweetVisit ThePatriotNurse.com to learn more from Rachel The Patriot Nurse. The Patriot Nurse is an actively practicing RN, with a BSN.  In addition to her work in the United States, she has also traveled extensively for medical mission work. She takes a very balanced approach to prepping that is decidedly reason-based.  Many people, after prepping for awhile, begin to realize their preps are covered in the food and weapons arenas.  Medical preparedness is decidedly less glitzy, but it is integral to a well-rounded plan for thriving during times of difficulty.  The Patriot Nurse’s mission it to fill that void for the average Joe. She is currently conducting a nation wide tour teaching her clinics called Medical Prep 101 and Medical Prep 201 respectively.  She may be coming to a town near you soon in fact. We had a great conversation in this interview, we discussed some harsh medical realities along the way and a few myths that can do preppers real harm in some situations.  We also discussed being honest about your needs, your skills and your preps in assessing your next moves.  Episode-1140- Women of Prepping Series Episode Four | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:42

TweetFormer Macy’s Addict, now “Queen of Tires, Dirt and Pallets!” After spending 16 years in the real estate business Tabitha Bettencourt changed course to become a 911 dispatcher in the 5th largest city in California. After 9 working in law enforcement during which she met her husband and got married she began watching the economy slide and civilization decline.  Along the way Tabitha and her husband opted to restart their lives on 2 acres of bare land on a hill on the Oregon Coast.  The move was a major downsize in economy but in many ways a major upsize in living. Tabitha now is basically retired from any sort job and instead stays home  in her own words “to build and dig and create while Hubby earns the money and supports me in the Lowe’s habit I have become accustom too”. Tabitha joins us to discuss prepping from a woman’s point of view as the forth member of our female forum.  Episode-1139- Women of Prepping Series Episode Three | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:02

TweetPaula Hradkowsky (rad cow ski) is a 60 year old semi retired former CPA that became a prepper only 5 years ago.  She was raised in a typical middle class household where self reliance was really considered something poor people did. Here parents were both part of the WWII and Depression eras and had tough childhoods.  Like many such individuals they worked hard to make sure their kids had a better life then they did. Fortunately for Paula the experiences of her parents childhood did get planted as a seed inside of her at an early age, though she never realized it until much later in life.  She listened to talk radio discuss problems for years, yet seldom discuss individualized solutions, only political banter.  In 2008 as a woman approaching retirement age she watched the financial recession do a ton of damage.  This woke her up and reconnected her with that seed planted in her by parents who had lived though it all before. In the last five years she has flipped her spouse to the prepping lifestyle.  They now both have concealed carry permits, plenty of stored food and water, stored fuel, two generators and a small garden.  Paula has also been on a paleo style diet for 16 years now and it has been the only thing to help with a chronic health issue she has known as Lupus. She joins us today as the third batter in our Woman of Prepping Series to discuss prepping from an woman’s view, with some amazing insights in how you can get your spouse on board.  Men the way she answers my final question is worth the entire episode three times over, tune in and get some wisdom on how to talk to your wife about prepping that will really hit home.  Episode-1138- Low Input vs. High Input Permaculture Design | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:39

TweetContour Based Wood Core Beds from Today’s Episode I figured now would be a good time to discuss this subject as it applies to two major projects underway at the Spirko homestead.  Of course we just recently completed the contour based wood core garden beds at our first workshop.  Those who attended also got to see the area that will be our “showcase urban forest garden”, an area of 2700-3500 square feet depending on what we actually use of it. The work involved in establishment of these two systems is dramatically different.  One required a lot of initial inputs, mulch, wood cores, heavy equipment, fungal and bacterial inoculation, organic fertilizer  and lots of manual labor.  The result is pretty much a turn key system.  While it will take a year to fully mature, it is a long term and very stable system. The new project, the forest garden will be remarkably low input.  We did dig out one hole for a garden pond based out of a stock tank and a short trench to connect it to one upgrade.  But the work could have been done in a day with a shovel by one person. Today I will contrast these two systems and discuss the permaculture concept of an “energy audit” and why it is critical to our long tern sustainability.  Specifically if the SHTF, we will immediately go into a scenario where what comes out must at least equal what we put in.  Today this is measured in money with no concept of the damage done to the system long term.  Tomorrow that likely won’t be an option. Join Me Today to Discuss… Contour based wood core beds Initial materials 12 yards of wood mulch About 5 tons of wood core 30-40 lbs of blood meal 15-20 lbs of bone meal 5 lbs of cover crop seed 4 days of heavy equipment usage 20 gallons of gasoline Work required and system output analysis One man 2 months 110 feet by hand 20 men, one machine 160 feet in 1.5 days in the rain System life time, annuals 10-15 years, perennials infinite Required ongoing inputs, planting, weeding, fertility, mulching Primary attributes, water harvesting, nutrient retention, erosion resistance 3000 Square Foot Forest Garden Initial Materials Landscaping timbers (20-35) Large spikes (40-70) 2 galvanized stock tanks 6 ft by 2 ft (capacity 840 gallons) 1 galvanized oval end tank 2 x 1 x 6 ft (for reed bed) 4 polyethylene barrels for aquaponics system Gravel for the aquaponics system Pumps for the aquaponics system 1 Polyethylene tank, capacity 1,500 gallons PVC pipes and fittings Hardwood mulch (20-25 yards) Rain gutters for out building Electrical wiring Work required and system output analysis 1 Person, time required unknown but work load is easy Aquaponics system is an add on Required ongoing inputs, planting, weeding, fertility, mulching, pruning System life time infinite for most components Primary attributes, water harvesting, nutrient retention, erosion resistance, protein production, energy conserving Final analysis Forest garden will take longer but require less phyical and machine labor Wood core system is more conducive to row crops Both systems require many initial inputs, the list grows Both systems are true long term systems developing their own cycles The forest garden is more energy conserving and easier to maintain On a larger property the two systems provide for each other Planting and plants must be calculated based on final designs and are not really suited to direct comparison Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Mint TSP Gear WalkingToFreedom Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
