Learn Russian with RussianPod101! Don't forget to stop by RussianPod101.com for more great Russian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky – one of the greatest and most famous writers and thinkers in the world. He was born in November 11, 1821 in Moscow where he spent his childhood and youth. At the age of 16 Dostoevsky entered the Military Engineering Academy in St. Petersburg. After graduation he worked in his specialization for a year but having made sure literature is his calling, he retired. In 1844 Dostoevsky wrote his first novel – "Poor folk", which was met with the most benevolent critics in the literary circles. In 1848, Dostoevsky joined revolutionary circles, took active part in promoting utopian socialism, stood for the freedom of personality. For this forbidden political activity the writer was sentenced to death penalty, but later the sentence was mitigated to the deportation to Siberia for hard labor "with the deprivation of all rights and property". During 4 years of hard labor Dostoevsky was completely cut off the literary work and obtained the possibility to write again only by 1859. In 1963, Dostoevsky and his brother issue the magazines called "Time" and "Epoch", on the pages on which appear such works as "The insulted and humiliated", "The house of Dead", "Notes from underground". Deportation to Siberia largely changed Dostoevsky's views on life. He rethought his utopian ideas, revolutionary way of reforming Russia, started paying more attention to the problems of human soul, morals, questions of good and evil, philosophical ques [...]

----Formal English---- Recruiter: We are always ready to recruit talented young people. It seems that apart from talent and youth, you also have impressive work experience. A good economist is a rare thing. Nowadays, every second person is an economist or a lawyer, but the skilled ones are worth their weight in gold. Marina:I absolutely agree with you. When I was studying to be an economist the requirements for entrance and graduation were stricter. Now, everyone can enter this faculty. Recruiter:That's why in order to make sure that you're really the right person for us, we can offer you the position of secretary with the duties of translator for now. So you will quickly learn a lot about the company. You will have to work with all the in-house documentation, receive calls from our clients, and deal with all administrative matters. Marina: Secretary? Translator? English translator? Recruiter:Yes. I hope you can speak English. The majority of our clients are foreigners and all the documentation is in English. Marina: Unfortunately, I think this position is not for me. --------------------------- Learn Russian with RussianPod101! ----Formal English---- Doctor: Okay, are you ready for a change? Elena: Yes, doctor. I'm ready. However, I don't have any complaints about my health. Learn Russian with RussianPod101! Don't forget to stop by RussianPod101.com for more great Russian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Recruiter:Hello, tell us a little about yourself. Marina:Oh, I don't even know where to start... Okay, I am thirty years old. After I graduated from university I worked as an economist for six years, but unfortunately, three months ago I was laid off. Recruiter: Did your employer explain the reason for laying you off? Marina:He had no time for it, he is like a squirrel on a treadmill now. Our company is going through hard times. More than thirty percent of our employees were laid off. That's why our boss doesn't even bother to explain the reasons to every employee. Recruiter: I see. Let me guess, budget organization? Marina:Yes. Now there is not only great competition from the side of private companies, but government subsidies for state-financed organizations were also reduced. The management and development strategies are already out of date. Changes should be made urgently, but our management is only concerned about cutting costs. Recruiter:I understand. We are a private organization, so we don't rely so much on someone else's financial support. Let's talk about what we can offer each other. --------------------------- Learn Russian with RussianPod101! How you managed to graduate from school without bad marks is beyond me. Misha:Yeah, that was a fluke. It's been a while. It will be interesting to find out who is doing what now. They have probably all gotten married and had kids. Marina:Well, yes, most of our classmates have settled down to married life. Take a look at our page on Vkontakte, you will find all the latest news. Misha:Yeah, I've been throwing myself into my work and have had no time to message anybody.
